I am no longer surprised that there are so many expats who failed to plan their retirements. Thailand is a wonderful place to retire provided that you can afford to live comfortably here. Running out of money makes for a miserable life.

Yes and totally agree Pete, I would be petrified of running out of money whilst in Thailand so I will take reserves. I noticed on the last few trips that it can be very easy to go well over budget so a significant stash of emergency funds (not intending to spend if avoidable) is a total must.

Regarding the first story, here we go again with Canada. Where does he live in Canada, somewhere on the prairies in Manitoba or Saskatchewan as a "bigger guy"? Come to Richmond literally all Asian food and 90% plus Asian population. And the most attractive and successful women go to Vancouver from all over Canada and the world. Vancouver is like Asian New York demographic wise. As for the transit system, has this guy never been on the Skytrain in Vancouver? Modern high rise condo she lives in...literally just described Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond etc. Literally beautiful Asian women everywhere in Vancouver metro. You can drink the clean tap water in Vancouver and the temperature is cool and stable pretty much all year long. You can also go skiing right by the ocean. I think this guy just lives in the wrong place in Canada which must be somewhere not on the west coast in a big metro area.

Thai ladies from the entertainment zones are most of the time spoiled by their new life standard. It become their benchmark to stay independent or having a quick exit in case relationships get heavier than their cultural stubbornness, non-existent academic background or laziness. Been there, done that. I did left a big chunk of my heart and money out there. After 7 years of trying 6 months each year, I am now convinced to keep a 3 day rule in active mode and keep the pleasure of wallowing in fresh flesh ricocheting from bed to bed. But, holding tight in budget is the key to stay on saddle and be able to get back home with the smile ~

Interesting that your brought up the Filipino maids in Singapore. Did you ever try the afternoon discos? Some enterprising bars, created these Sunday "afternoon disco" specially for these girls. One could go there, drink with them, dance and get some quick aerobics.

Work out the cost of airfare, accommodation, meals (research these by food types, Indian, Thai, Italian, Malaysian, Japanese, Chinese etc, 4 beers a day plus 1 only ladies drink then multiply by 10. That way you may have a reserve of $$$ when things go wrong. Keep a level head. Do a recce for future trips when you have lost those bright eyes and bushy tail and your head has stopped swooning.
@roymuss8 ай бұрын
Great advice Peter, try to keep a level head and plan well, not always easy when you are having a great time, maybe there is a market for travel advisors based in Thailand....... Open minded ones😊
@ccrider84838 ай бұрын
It is impossible to give an accurate travel budget to a stranger, but excluding airfare and hotel a person can have a good holiday on $50 to $500 a day. It all just depends on what and how much you want to do.

Work out how much u think u might need. Then triple it. If there is any left by the time u get back home, u can put that towards your next trip.

Many years ago they got 1 day off a month couple of years ago they now get off days every Sundays. It is not uncommon to see these maids dating the Bangladeshi male foreign workers who also have the same Sundays off on the arms of their BFs but its also not uncommon for these maids to be on dating sites looking for a well to do farang to marry so they can emigrate

I've been spending my winters in Thailand for the past 4 years. I met a Thai girl, single mother. We hit it off pretty good, but I'm not sure she has any strong feelings for me. I'm at the point now just to walk away. I've tried to be good to her, but I think I may be taking advantage of. She is 24 years younger than me. We have kept in contact almost every day, but that little voice in the back of my head, keeps telling me something isn't right. I guess I'll see this winter.

In 1999 when I was looking for a job in BKK, I had only enough to last me 2 months, and on the last 2 weeks, my American friend gave me a lifeline by letting me stay in her apartment. I finally got the interview at end of the 3rd month, thanks to another American lady which I met in February of that year. I made the boss an offer that he couldn't refuse and the rest is history.

To the first story: don’t marry the girl, it sounds like a car crash waiting to happen!! To the second story, it’s really well written, you wonder why a 26 y. o. doesn’t have someone (parents, relatives, friends) who could send him some money, so maybe he exaggerated his money problems a little for dramatic effect?!

story 2 - the young fellow seems to be smart (university major, picking up the thai language quickly) so it's surprising why he spent so much money on his alcoholic gf even though he didn't have strong feelings for her. I guess women make men do stupid things. story 3 - yes, on Sundays, Filipino helpers in Singapore are with friends on Orchard Road, Botanic Gardens, Sentosa and other popular places. It's nice to see them happy on their days off. I feel bad for the helpers who are forced by their employers to work on Sundays because they can't see their friends
