Rural Russians will agree with what ever their TV tells them. If today they are not interested in Alaska and tomorrow the government of Russia suddenly invaded they would change their opinion that quickly. Lots of interviews in Russia in January and early February were done asking if Russia should invade Ukraine. Most of the respondents said no they are our brothers we all have family there, why do we need anything from Ukraine. At this point the Russian government were on TV every day denying they were going to invade. A few days later the same people had z stickers on their cars and happily gave the reasons why they invaded that had just been supplied by the TV.

@@senecathefuka441 for them nazis and fascists are those who oppose Russia. They were saying that since mid 1920's, even called Piłsudski like that. All the Polish elite in 1939 was labeled as fascist at the time before they were killed in Katyń in 1940. This is how they called all NATO too. Not only because they were anti Soviet Union but also because they didn't "dismantle" west Germany. Poland in the communist times was called "brotherly nation" to be again labeled as "fascist" later when Putin took power.

You can tell how frightened and suspicious these people are. They don't know if it's an agent of the government or a random person interviewing. They know they are supposed to support the operation, so they either say the line or say nothing at all. Some of course fully believe in the government and the cause. This is true in any nation, but I think this video is very telling.

if you want to have better interactions with people; 1. approach them with the camera facing down, 2. speak to them 3. as they are responding ask them if its okay to film them while raising the camera you notice even in this video, you received a very open and sincere response from someone who did not have the camera facing them. you have a youtube channel, so your allegiance is to your youtube audience. however, if you can make people feel comfortable, they will be more willing to share themselves in greater depth. Approaching a person with a camera facing them while asking them questions will make people feel uncomfortable in every country.

I have spent a couple of weeks in a few very remote places in the far east of Russia, and it became immediately obvious how isolated these communities can be. As a European, the sheer solitude of these places is hard to grasp. One of them, for example, was the Kuril islands which extend towards Japan, and Moscow actually has to pay the residents to prevent them from abandoning these forsaken rocks. Just mentioning to someone where I came from was enough to have crowds gather around me in the street, especially from younger people who wish for a better place to live but can't afford to move any of the larger cities or have to care for their relatives, as westerners are seen as sort of mythical creatures who everybody heard of, but nobody actually has ever met. The only connection they have to something resembling civilization is state media, and I honestly can't feel any anger towards these people, as they lack the information necessary to form any reasonable opinion. Barely anyone speaks English, which makes it even harder for them to connect to the rest of the world. All I feel for them is pity. A lot of them are good and honest people who care for their loved ones and their country, while their leaders deceive them and make them send their sons and brothers to the slaughter.

As a European, you have no idea that most of the world live exactly like this. Outside of your comfy European Union, life is not so easy. This is not a Russian phenomenon. Also, "barely anyone speaks English" -- you don't need to speak English to connect to the world, though it helps. "All I feel for them is pity" Ironically, probably they pity you. Rural people are usually very satisfied with their lives, not neurotic like people from urban centers. This is coming from someone from rural Brazil who moved to São Paulo (biggest metropolis in Latin America) then to Europe... Every step outside of my rural town gave me more money, but also more challenges, worries and mental health concerns. I was in Russia and visited my friends in lots of rural towns in Sverdlovsk and Kurgan oblast. They seemed to be happy, well-adjusted people and VERY VERY hospitable. Meanwhile people from Moscow are the worst Russia has to offer. It's like this everywhere. And to finish, we, third world people, don't need your pity. Save it for yourself. That's an amazing display of colonial mentality -- the Europeans also felt pity for the natives when they first stepped in the Americas.

I'm also from 2nd world and we also have some seriously underdeveloped villages with people who are completely disconnected from reality and get their info only from state media. See, there were interviews in rural areas after the 9/11 invasion half a decade after the attacks. The locals have never heard of, seen pictures or discussed the topic. Completely oblivious to the circumstances of the war and occupation. All they knew was western soldiers occupy the land and they get killed in the crossfire between islamists and wester occupiers (drones, terrorist attacks etc). You need to orient yourself in the world and you use what information is availabe. Propaganda had been shown to be incredibly powerfup if you control the Mainstream channels of communication/information. Mix truths, lies, your ideology together. Make false statements and admit they were false, rectifying your positions and the information shared. After a few decade of that the majority of the population, even if sceptical, will have a baseline worldview advantageous to you. The internet has the potential to break this, but especially the russians are very capable in disinformation campaigns and they flood social media with it. If you want an obvious, well documented example search for: Cambridge Analytica. The guardian had a great series on it and interviewed a few whistleblowers as well. Edit Cambridge Analytica: Researchers affiliated to the russian state acquired access to facebook data (back then fb shared data for research purposes quite freely, which is actually a honorable notion. Data is money nowadays). The company launching CA is known for influencing elections, they offer their services worldwide. Smearing campaigns, disinformation spin doctors etc. They used the facebook data to group people and tailor information and feed for these groups so that can influence how these groups are presented with information on current politicals topics. They took the "models" they built on data of american citizens and actively tried to influence the American election. They had the intention to foster trumps chances for presidency. This was before he became president.

Even in the absence of other sources of information, any vaguely intelligent human being recognises advertising and propaganda when they see or hear it. We support our (Russian) soldiers for two reasons: 1) They are our compatriots and acquaintances, and of course we will be for them. 2) We just don't have a choice. No one in Russia believes(with the exception of a small part of the youth) that defeat in the war will make life better. And by the way, it's your fault. Your Russophobia and hatred even for ordinary citizens, despite the fact that you called us powerless, gave rise to reciprocal hatred. We have a choice of two evils, and we choose the lesser.
@chawk6201

@Бульба Sure, the choice of "two evils" your government chose from being: 1. Don't invade a sovereign country, question it's right to exist, commit massacres on its people, annex its land, and threaten nuclear war when you start losing like a baby having a tantrum. 2. Do all of that stuff and lie to your population about how well it's going while using propaganda to tell them it's a good thing. Which one is the lesser evil again? Couldn't quite tell. Look, russophobia is an issue. But as an American, I know about zero people who actually blame average Russian citizens for the actions of their government. But the fact is, many Russians support this genocidal war, while those who don't are silenced and imprisoned, and there is no doubt that the intentions behind all of this are anything but good. That's my take. Believe what you will, but it will not be the West that ignites nuclear war. It will be Putin.

@chawk6201
@chawk6201 2 жыл бұрын
@Бульба No Western media says the war is going to end anytime soon. Everyone understands it will go on for a long time. I'm petty sure Polish media recorded it as well. Not to mention Ukrainian media. And Hungarian media. And Romanian media. Or are those the west too, because they go against Russia's narrative? See, the difference is that the West isn't a monolith. Europe isn't a monolith culture. It becomes a case of "do you believe the man found with a gun in his hand, or the twenty witnesses who saw him shoot the guy to death directly in front of them? There is mountains of evidence concerning Russian soldiers' crimes, especially in Bucha. As for Cuba, obviously America has done bad things. If you wanted to cite much more recent events, you could say Iraq. That was just as unjustified as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The difference is that our media was allowed to criticize the war, the leader, the government. People could protest and say what they wanted. Russians can't.
@Бульба-д1э
@Бульба-д1э 2 жыл бұрын
@@chawk6201 First, I did not say that the West is monolithic. Secondly, why didn't the governor of Bucha report the killing of civilians when the Russians left? Thirdly, I recommend you googled about the crimes of the Ukrainian military, believe me, you will learn a lot of interesting things (even from your specialists). Fourthly, the Ukrainian government itself admitted that they used the Minsk agreements to prepare for war and they did not want peace (as well as another star-striped country). Fifth, we can openly condemn the president and the government, but if someone start insulting our soldiers, then of course he will be arrested. I just want to say that it is stupid to create absolute evil from Russia, because there are no good people in politics.

I was born in the 50s. I have traveled extensively and visited places in the Soviet Union and East Germany several times during the 1970s and 80s. Those were times without the internet and one imagines that the isolation and ignorance of the outside world was easier to understand then. It's very scary to see how similar it seems to be in the Russian countryside still, some even sound like they think they still live in the Soviet Union. The vodka is flowing and the motherland must be defended from Nazis and fascists, it's completely surreal to see the interviews!

Actually he has interviewed many undercover officers, one that recognised him from the internet also, at least one per city based video. Young men wearing new or stylish clothes and sunglasses while the rest of the young men are either mobilised, struggling to maintain an income or dressed like university students. Young men that will refuse to answer his questions but don’t threaten or swear at him. Young men that get annoyed and monologue about how he should respect and trust the government but state that they are just students or regular citizens. The chances of there being that many polite autistic young men with nationalist leanings, that act in the same manner, in multiple cities, is ludicrous. Our boy Dan knows what he’s doing.

My father was born and raised in Ukraine. He fought for the Soviets in WW2. He hated the Russian government and anyone who believed in communism. He came to America after the war and started a new life here. It was tough for him. He only knew a few words of English and he had to learn the language quickly. He did learn English but he was never that great at speaking it. He met my mother, married her, worked hard, they raised a family and they had a good life. He always told that we were lucky to live in this country. He told me that speaking your mind about politics in the Soviet Union could get you thrown in prison or worse yet, get you killed. I have a lot of relatives in Ukraine and some are in the fight. I wish I could help them but I'm too old. I did send over a nice fancy drone. I hope it's helping them. Slava Ukraini.

Many of the Russian people do not support the war. Hundreds of thousands of able bodied men of fighting age are fleeing the country in a mass exodus to avoid the conscriptions. Many others have resorted to breaking their own limbs to avoid fighting a ridiculous, pointless war; in the wake of Putin's recent call for additional conscriptions needing to be sent out, the top Google search in Russia quickly became "How to break limb safely at home". These people live in rural Russia. They live in a completely different world than you and I with generally free and uncensored access to the internet and the rest of the world. In this video, that one lady who shared where she gets all her information from was very telling, Radio and TV. I don't even trust American television to be a reliable source of information, so imagine how absolutely propaganda ridden Russian Radio and Television must be. Also take into consideration that TV and Radio is the only form of outside communication many rural Russians have access to. I am excited at the potential of a future for the Russian people where they can freely and openly criticize and disagree with their government without needing to feel uneasy. Where more people have open and uncensored access to information. Where we can finally have peace in our time.
