In the Baltics, people have long been imprisoned for their opinion, for example, blogger Kirill Fedorov from Riga has been imprisoned for neutral coverage of what is happening in Ukraine. And in Ukraine, people are killed in the dungeons of the SBU and buried in the forest for their opinion, judging by the photo and video in Telegram channels. In Holland, the police unleash dogs on people for their opinion, there is a video. In Germany, people are fired from their jobs for their opinions and their bank accounts are blocked. If in the USA a person has his own opinion, then he commits suicide with three bullets in the back on the way to the store, and they also commit suicide in the USA on the threshold of their house with multiple stab wounds ... Let's talk about this too, or is it a taboo and about it is a democracy that does not allow speaking.

Having lived in different countries and read the news about many others, I agree that this issue of "normalization" is key. Particularly since the same process happens in many places, in various ways. Many european countries have laws prohibiting specific statements and even in the US (where I still believe freedom of expression is more protected), that are plenty of (past and present) examples of limitations to the freedom of expression. Generally speaking, western countries have been moving towards a level of political dogmatism that is quite disturbing. Nowadays I am not so much concerned about the authorities, but constantly engage in self-censorship out of fear from acquaintances, colleagues and neighbors. Many people I know do the same...

Last year, 400 people were arrested in Russia for the words they said on social networks. How many people do you think were arrested in the UK for making statements on social networks last year? 3300. One example is a young 19-year-old woman from Liverpool - Chelsea Russell. Her friend died in a car accident and she posted the lyrics to his favorite song on Instagram. It was a rap and the words "nigga" were in the song. She was arrested, convicted, found guilty and sentenced to 500 hours of community service and a fine. And during the year, a curfew was set for her from 8 pm to 8 am." We should add that in Ukraine, according to the office of the Prosecutor General, more than 24,000 people were arrested for words last year.
@user-FGWL
@user-FGWL 10 ай бұрын
This is not entirely true. 3300 arrested is not the same thing as those convicted of crimes. Most of them were called to speak with the police, half of them were released. Also, they were all summoned for interrogation under a certain criminal article, which includes such crimes as: Internet fraud, harassment, threats, incitement to violence (on the Internet and social networks), etc. As for the Chelsea girl, she published the words from the Snoop Dogg song, in which it is not just the N-word. Out of context (and in the song itself, too), it sounds like a call to kill blacks. The first judge did not go into details of the story and she was convicted. Then there was an appeal, the trial lasted 1 year and she was acquitted. I think these points should be taken into account, without them the situation looks completely different.

The problem is that young people in Russia are mostly liberal and brainwashed by US propaganda. They believe in everything they say in the Western media and absolutely 100% do not believe the Russian media. Since they mentally live in the West and they are brainwashed, of course they are afraid to speak their rotten opinion, because all they can say is to pour shit on their country with great hatred, yes, for such people there is no freedom of speech 🥰

For future topics...since there are many immigrants in Latvia, how about some questions about the immigrant experience? - How hard was it to adjust to a new country? Suggestions for the best ways to adjust to a new country? How do you quickly form new friendships? - What do you like best about Latvia? What do you miss about your home country? You could also do "travelogue" videos if you want to take a break from current events. - Ask people on the street the most interesting places in Riga for a tourist to visit. Then show us some of these places. - Ask people their favorite Latvian food. If they are immigrants, compare Latvian food and food from their home country. Have they found a Latvian food that they like, that they had not eaten before moving to Latvia?

Very interesting topic, and some thoughtful answers. I disagree with the guy who said the USA has less freedom of speech. There's a difference between speech being socially rude or unacceptable, and speech being illegal. The guy is probably thinking something like, you can't say you hate gays. This is more of a social taboo, and is based on a desire not to hurt other people. This is fundamentally different from not being allowed to criticize the state, or call the SVO a "war".

In Russia you can call SMO a War if you like, the guy literally lied in the beginning of video. You aswell can say that Putin is ruining Russia or he is a traitor or whatever, for example, I think that 8 years of waiting before the start of SMO is a huge mistake by Putin and in the future he will have to suffer punishment for this. But if you use media, or you are an influencer with the possibilities to influence thousands of people, then you have to prove your words, and if you can't, then you will meet with responsibility. I know for certain that in the United States one cannot criticize the state for failures, such as the inability to provide assistance to the population in a crisis situation. You can not humiliate the state, under any circumstances. But it is allowed to express one's disagreement with the president in a limited way. But you will never find articles in the media that say that the blood of millions is on the hands of the US government. Well, a huge censorship machine, banned topics and words, and if you go beyond, you are canceled, you are marginalized, banned on all possible platforms. So if you compare the US and Russia, Russia is a much freer country. I think that there is more freedom only somewhere in Latin America and Africa.

Look, I dont want to play the whataboutism card, but there are major, major restictions on free speech in the West, too. For example, if someone put a camera in my face and asked me a sensitive political question, I would give a strict "no comment" and carry on with my daily business. I cannot comment on Russia other than to say in times of struggle ALL countries adopt (temporarily) less democratic positions. We seen it in the West during the covid lockdowns; This is an equally trying time for Russia as they find themselves in armed conflict. It is naiive to think that any country allows its populous true freedom, much less freedom of speech.

There is no freedom of speech in Russia. Russia’s political structure and political culture still resemble that of many different countries centuries ago, in the day of kings. In essence, Putin is quite literally a modern king in ever possible way, including in that nobody would ever dare say anything bad about the king because they know that their head will be delivered to him on a silver platter moments after he found out about what they said about him. That’s how things were in every country back in the day. The people living in Russia have not experienced things any other way.

But "first" before asking the above question ask this: Do you think Russia had the right to attack Ukraine, destroy its infrastructure and kill Ukraine citizens in order to denazify? Another suggested question: If another country has Nazis why is it any business of Russia? Should they attack ALL countries that have Nazis? In my country those are what's considered "if the shoe was on the other foot (in this case Russia) do other countries have the right to attack Russia? Thank you.

Remember 9/11. Does USA had the right to attack Afghanistan? Does USA had the right to attack Iraq? Does USA the right to attack Belgrad? 3) If another country has nazis Russia will help other countries to destroy nazis sentiments in any country. All countries has the nazis BUT you sure that all countries has the nazis in government and army? All presidents talk about killing other ethnic just because of ethnic? Ukranian presidents talked about it. Think about it. 4) Try to attack Russia and the world will see atomic ww3. Do you want it? I think not. Any questions?

I never heard that if someone gone to a rally, protesting with a Russian flag in a European country and he/she will be prisoned. Maybe in Ukrain during this war, but nowhere else. It would be insensitive act during this war but probably the police only would disturbe you to prevent any escalation, attack. Maybe they would ask you not to do that, because it is not a smart act during this time. If you use for example a Nazi flag or wear a Nazi uniform on the street that could cause much problem, because as I remember that is forbidden in my country at least with some another symbol too like the SS symbol or the Soviet Sickle and Hammer or the 5 pointed red star. These are forbidden symbols in my country in Hungary. You can use them for education purpose or in an art installation. In EU countries you can talk about anything, like gays, lesbians, all the LMBTQ things, or any kind of religion, not just muslims. You cant rally, agitate another people against anybody because of his/her “race”, skin tone, religion, sexual orientation, language, country, etc. Freedom of speech, freedom of expression are fundamental rights but you cant step the red line and agitate people. Warmongers are also not welcome here. You can express that you dont agree with you government or any politician, prime minister, even using extreme language, swearing, but you there are limits here too if you are speaking in front of a wider audience. In Hungary sadly started some slow changing by the current government against the freedom of speech. For example more and more people kicked from their job because what they said or did, protesting, organising or take a part of a strike. Their employer is the government indirectly.
