I started learning Russian about three years ago, and began using this channel for listening practice. Last year I visited St Petersburg, met someone, got married -- and now we're expecting our first child! So that's as good a reason as any, I guess :D

I kept hearing the word «Хорошо» at my job and I thought it sound so cool so I looked it up. Which lead me to pay attention and look up more words. And so I decided to start learning Russian four months ago. I live in a neighborhood with a lot of Russian people and the first week I was learning the first word I read on a sign outside was «Аптека». I was very excited even though I didn’t know what it meant at the time. I find the Russian language interesting and so unlike any language I know. Will I ever speak it fluently? Probably not but it will be fun trying to find my way to be understood and understand others. It is a hard time politically right now but I feel like more than ever more people need to learn Russian as a way to connect so we can understand each other. Here in the United States people tend to see the Russian people as a whole with united thoughts and beliefs but they are like people all over the world who have complex and varied thought and ideas. Why would we not want to connect and understand them? It is a wonderful thing to learn even a little bit of a language to hear and understand from someone else’s point of view whether we agree with those ideas or not.

I won't lie, I learned Russian with your channel starting 3 years ago, and ended up getting two really cool jobs in Ukraine where I continued to learn and speak it. The war greatly complicated my relationship with the language. I'd cringe every time I used it, and it's taken me months to even begin moving past those feelings. Because of the war, I lost my job in Kyiv, but moved to Estonia...last night I found myself at a table with Ukrainians, Russians, and Estonians--and we all used Russian to hang out and enjoy the evening. It was a big step, to be honest. Russian language gets abused as a tool of politics sometimes, but it predates all those things. I don't know if I'll ever feel the same love for it as I did before, but I hope other people with less drama in their lives can enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for your years of hard work on the channel. I hope you know it helped me get to where I am.

I use music to help me learn and learn to help me enjoy Russian music, and that helps keep my interest in it alive despite the negativity of current events. For my money, it doesn't get much better than Filatov & Karas and Катя Чехова / Вариант К, Земфира or IOWA.

Da? Well, I'M offended by 'your' comments here, because America is fat, sedated and mentally weak. Oouh--good. So, ducking chto? Honestly, we Americans should take the plank of wood out of our own eyes before we try to 'help' the dust in our friends eyes in Russia. But, voila!, that's the modern times in the USA. We female dog about it, but whine when the lenient ways isn't an option. While back in Siberia, they're mostly poor and have completely nothing, outside of St. Petersburg or Moscow. Grow the quack up. Take an airplane and come to a better country. Really. All you're doing is Gluttony and Sloth here. Tak? Come at me, bro.

Some of my adult students who are learning English also start expressing hatred towards the language and I explain them how little sense it makes. What did the language do to you? The governments change, we all die but the language carries on helping us finding the common ground and understanding the reasons behind our differences. When you see that someone eggs you on hating someone or something, think about it very carefully. Bests of luck and lots of linguistic achievements!

Apart from current situations and political disagreements, it is allways fine, to learn a language that is wiedely accepted in a huge area. The West-Europeans, at the moment are looking at you with question marks in their eyes, RUSSIAN-WHAT? But think twice: I am native German, living in Düsseldorf (DUS), the former twin city of your amazing Moscow, unfortunately I never had the opportunity to visit. In Germany people speak the language of the NAZIS and nowbody cares. That proves the absolute independence and separation of a language and actual political situations. Even President Putin is fluend in my mother language. 2001 when he visited Berlin, I looked up to him for his friendly gesture to hold his speech in the Parliament in German ! What a gesture of respect. Unfortunately the global situation changed not only to the better. The future will come and then even the younger people at school or in universities should be prepared, not only with pure technical skills or scientific knowledge but also with a widely used communication platform, that is RUSSIAN - able to cover communication needs from the former Soviet Baltic States up to Vladivostok. To learn Ukrainian makes sence, if you marry there. Absolutely yes. If I marry to Japan - Japanese is even fine. But if I am doing business or I surf around the WWW, it is far more efficient to understand and speak Russian. When the time comes when the conflict in the Black Sea is settled, cultural, economical and of course again normal political relations grow, to understand each other RUSSIAN is best way. We have the west with ENGLISH and the east with RUSSIAN.

Russian is a useful language because it is not only spoken in Russia( the largest country in the world) but also spoken and understod in the following countries; 1.Ukraine 2.Belarus 3.Lithuania 4.Latvia 5.Estonia 6.Tajikstan 7.Turkmenistan 8.Uzbekistan 9.Kazakhstan 10.Kyrghistan 11.Georgia 12.Arminia 13.Azerbaijan 14.Moldova Plus the older generations in Soviet Block countries understand and speak Russian. And the Western Europe in this cold winter will soon learn the importance of Russian gas and will speak some Ruski too....🤪

@@bravemoon2124 I mean really, a very rear person would learn English just to read Shakespear plays in original language. So I don't really expect anyone to learn Russian only to be able to read, let's say, Anna Karenina. Wouldn't it be a bit nerdy? Not all Russians have read it, by the way. I think, literature in one of the least meaningful reasons to learn any language. A beautiful and romantic one though.
