These tips are useful, thank you! As a young esthetician (21), I feel like I really need to go that extra mile & not do the bare minimum. Especially when I have older clients that might not take me seriously just because I’m younger.

Lol I’m the oldest and have been into skin for 34 years, and not sure if I’ll pass because my young teacher rides my ass over my analysis and other things …like if someone says they have dry skin, but it’s actually combo oily, why would I treat her for dry skin? If that’s the Esthetics way, and not micromanaging the old lady,, and I pass this course, I’ll be changing some things when I go solo.

Nerida! This is such an important video!! Thank you so much for addressing this! I have a question though. The Hotel Bel-Air is a little different than say a doctor’s office, or even a regular day spa... when you are meeting a client for the first time, do you ever sit down with them and go over a consultation form with them, say, to discuss concerns, allergies, past cosmetic procedures, or medications? This is something I like doing before they are even on the table, and I wanted to hear your thoughts.
@NeridaJoySkincare
@NeridaJoySkincare 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. There are less then 60, 5 star spa's in the world, and I am fortunate enough to work at one of them. That being said, some of what I have talked about in this video is from the Forbes 5 star performance guide. If you start out with this knowledge and understanding, you have room to develop your own 5 star style. Consultations prior to taking them to the treatment is also great... you develop what works best for you and your spa/doctors office. Great question though Devon..... much love to you:))

I needed this video, thank you Nerida! I am wondering at what point during the facial you talk about home care with clients? I can't seem to figure out when/how to tell them what they should be using. I worry about talking too much and disrupting their relaxation, but I don't like to wait until the end and spring it on them. Thanks so much!!!
@devon.pfeifer
@devon.pfeifer 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Hailey 👋🏼 during a consultation with a client, at the very beginning of your facial is best, in my opinion. For example I will go over their forms with them that they have filled out, and I will say to them “Okay, now that we’ve finished going over your history, we’ll go into the treatment room and I will do a thorough analysis of you skin. When we are finished with your treatment, based on your concerns, we will come back out and discuss treatment frequency, as well as home care recommendations.” I am very upfront with people, and I want clients to know that I am serious about what I do, and that way it is not this “surprise selling” scenario at the end their facial-people should expect me to talk about it. And of course if people have questions while you are working on them, talking about what kind of homecare they use to help them can entice them to purchase. Education on using product is so important, and it shouldn’t have to be pushy just to try to get a sale-though I know many environments that are like that.

I will do a video talking about this too. It depends on the client. Sometimes they are very anxious to talk about product recommendations. Other times, they are wanting to relax more and we talk after. I gauge once I start the analysis in the beginning. I usually like to work with the skin first and see how it responds to my treatment, then i have more to talk about at the end, what i see will work best for them. Usually its at the end for me...but I tell them " i am going to work with your skin first and I will talk to you about whats needed at the end".

Nerida, thank you so much for sharing such valuable etiquette information that we aren’t necessarily taught in school. I’m a new Esti just starting my solo practice. I’m debating if I should buy a Wood’s lamp to aid me with skin analysis since I’m still learning what to look for... I never used one in school but I think it might be beneficial. Do you think it’s a good idea or an unnecessary expense?

Great video ! Am not an estie just respect your honesty and work ethics. I wonder Nerida, what would be the do"s and don"ts of a client? I have been planning to see you for a while but been saving money. NOW I feel anxious like am meeting a celebrity lol. I don't know it it's normal but I feel anxious and self conscious about being looked closely...Am not to thrill with my skin condition and I know you won't judge me and I want to improve my skin issues but something about it makes me feel vulnerable. silly I know! Hi Nerida..I’ve been a subscriber of yours for a few months. Jordan Samuel actually introduced me to your channel. I’m not a skincare student or professional, but do have a question for you. After a long term use of antibiotics following complications from last year’s flu. It killed all good and bad bacteria in my body. Of course this proved the prime breeding ground for a malassezia facial infection. I was misdiagnosed by three dermatologists..not one even bothered to look at my skin in any kind of magnifying lens or lamp. Each gave me a different diagnosis and more antibiotics. As I sat there scratching as gently as I could on my itchy face and begged for a culture to determine bacterial vs. fungal..all three refused. I’ve finally gotten the proper diagnosis and a topical anti fungal cream. My skin is still not back to normal. I believe that a good esthetician would have been able to diagnose the issue right away. The products to kill the yeast are prescription shampoos with chemicals and it’s hard on the skin. May I email you pictures of my skin now and have you make some product recommendations for me? Always a pleasure to watch you work your magic and teach! -Robin XoXo

OMG, I am so sorry you went through this Robin. Yes, please email me at educateyourskin@gmail.com. When you do please remind me you are from my KZbin channel. I will tell you though with yeast (candida albicians) you have to stay off certain foods for 3 months- bakers yeast (anything that rises i.e. cakes, breads etc) Cheese and mushroom (mould foods) Wine and vinegar (fermented foods) melons and if you have KP on the top backs of your arms (little bumps) then you also have to stay off sugar. 100% off these foods for 3 months when the candida is high in the system:))

Nerida Joy thank you! What is the difference between the 60 and 90 minute? How many different types of facials do you have on your menu? I really appreciate your answering all of my questions :)
@NeridaJoySkincare
@NeridaJoySkincare 5 жыл бұрын
My treatments are ALWAYS custom..... 90 minutes allows me to do longer massage and/or longer extractions. Sometimes a couple of different treatment masks and hands and/or feet...... It really depends on what I need to do for my clients skin on that day. Sometimes I could be extracting for basically the full 90 minutes. Sometimes I book two back to back facials for the same client just to get through all the extractions....I am big on extractions and being really thorougher. My clients will tell you I am an extraction queen but thats also why I get fast results:))@@Skinbyolivera

Nerida Joy thank you! Hi Nerida! I’m currently a student at Aveda. Before we even take our guests to our treatment bay, we fill out a questionnaire and we look at their skin in a Wood’s Lamp which shows us different colors, indicating different things on the skin. As I am graduating soon I’m nervous about not using this lamp at my new job. I feel like it is a crutch/ cheat sheet to knowing my guest’s skin type. How should I go about getting used to skin analysis without it? Thank you!
@NeridaJoySkincare
@NeridaJoySkincare 5 жыл бұрын
They didn't teach you without it at all? You need to make a list of the different skin types, sub conditions and other concerns such as open pores, blackheads, pustules, white heads etc. Have that piece of paper beside you when you are analysing your clients skin to help you to look and describe what you are seeing:))

Yes, High frequency works ....antibacterial. You can use it all over the face or zap(spark) pimples. Just don't use it at the same application as an acid....glycolic etc....it together is strong and can burn the skin topically:)
