I had the Evolv ITX, the GPU temps were so bad. GTX 1070 Strix @2050/8800 core/mem would run like 76C even with fan speed bumped up to 65%. Swapped the case to a Nano S with a SFX-L psu so the GPU would have a bit more room to breathe, and the max temps dropped to around 65C with 65% fan speed. 65% is kinda loud on the Strix cooler so 55% gives me right under 70C and is nice and inaudible(ish).

I have built PC's since the 286 days and even repairs on the c64 in my teens. Never have I come across even back then airflow issues causing a failure. That was in the ribbon cable days too. The store bought crap had those issues and those are the stories that still scare the uneducated PC builders to this very day. The only time Airflow might cause an issue is if you join the dummy ranks and start overclocking for negligible gains. Yes the gains aren't enough to warrant the excess heat unless you add water to your electrical system, which in itself screams Dumbass.

BTW the front intake is more than enough despite the solid metal front....I once mounted a wooden plate to my case at the front to see how much "intake" you actually need. Turns out the temperature didn't go up until a gap of 3mm!!! So yeah the result of your paper test fits in line with that. You really only need a gap of 3mm (maybe 5 to be safe) in front of your fan to have sufficient airflow. On a side note: these fans are designed to take air radially in an blow it out in axial direction. This again fits in line with the conducted tests. :)

Before watching the video, here is my assumptions. 1. If it has somewhat decent airflow or means of keeping the CPU/GPU under 90C, it can harm performance in the sense that you will have lower boost clocks and have little to no overclocking headroom, but performance will still be good. 2. If you have Vacuum sealed(ok a bit of an over exaggeration) closed case like the Enso or the Enthoo Evolv, then yes, as your components can’t breath and thermal throttling will kick in. Let’s see if I am right.

Can you try the Inwin 301. Small and beautiful case, but I think awful airflow
@kepeter976 жыл бұрын
I agree, they are totally beautiful and unique (the 301 maybe not so much)! I was getting bored of the standard case layout, so I got the 303, and I love it. About the 301: you can put 4 intakes in it! That would be very high positive pressure, especially in such a small case. It would push the air right out through the back perforations, the PSU, and the rear fan. I'd make the bottom fans be the strongest (fastest), the exhaust medium, and the ones in the front the weakest (so they wouldn't block the perforations on the back). Here's how I'd set up mine: 2* Bitfenix Spectre LED on the bottom up to 55% pwm intake, 1 spectre in the rear up to 45% exhaust, 240mm rad in the front with 2 spectres up to 40-45% intake (or exhaust, if temps > dust, at 40%). I'd use spectres, cause I'm a cheap ass mofo, and I also find them great. Silent on low, strong af on high speed (while remaining pretty quiet). And also be sure to use a psu which doesn't have a 0rpm mode, cause you'll need it for exhaust. FYI: I have a 303, with a 240mm radiator in the bottom between 2 spectres, and 2 EK Vardars (these go up to 12% pwm, cause they would be LOUD otherwise), and a 3rd spectre in the rear-most spot, right under the msi gaming gtx 980. The radiator cools a 5Ghz 7700k. Rear exhaust = spectre; top exhaust 3 140mm be quiet shadow wings (at 7V, ~600rpm), and I put the case's stock fan (@7V) onto the perforated side panel (using twist ties), cause air was getting trapped there. It's flawless. Silent at idle, barely audible at 100% load with a low frequency sound, which isn't annoying at all. CPU and GPU go up to 60C (in cpu heavy and/or poorly optimised games, such as AC origins, tc wildlands; otherwise 55 is tops).
@eirikol16 жыл бұрын
I have the 301 with a 8700k and a Titan Z I got used (dual gpu card). The Titan card is a bitch in terms of cooling, runs hot no matter what you do... I have a x52 radiator on the front fan mounts that works as an exhaust, having it intake cooked the motherboard, the rear fan and two bottom fan as intake. It works fairly well, the Titan is 375w tdp so I have no chance cooling it at all without it getting very, very loud... Trying to get hold of a 1080 but ya know...

Phanteks Evolv ATX tempered glass edition, got this case and has some temps issues , but I made the following changes and seems to be working just fine: Distanced the front plate by adding some stands + longer screws with this I got a 1 cm increase in the side gap (more air flow instantly dropping like 3/4 C on GPU) , CPU radiator up ( it's a 280mm so I blocked off the remaining space on the radiator tray with a thin plastic or cardboard and duct tape, stealthy mod I should add) , and unscrewed the top panel backside for more exhaust (no performance gain for this one though). Next step would be drilling breathing holes/gaps (pattern or model, imagination goes wild on this one) on front plate and/or top, but before I do that permanent mod I would really love to see some more suggestions / mods and so on. I know you have one around there so let's do this ! Cheers !

Removing the side panel doesn't equate to a suddenly 'ideal' scenario. With the side panel on the air is forced to rise (both naturally and because of the front intakes) and then be efficiently exhausted by the top fans, but with it off you suddenly lose that natural cycle of airflow and so less heat is actively moved away from the gpu. A straight case swap using the same fans was needed to show results here.

With the case side off, the fans are less effective at removing the heat.

U can easily solve over-heating... As u can see the side panel is mounted by 4 screws right into the construction of teh case, just use some spacers and make some distance . It will afgfect some dust apperaing more but It fixed mine problem. U can also buy some anti-dust placers and paste them there where the uncovered space is.( Also u can buy1080Ti with water force extension, probably the best !)

Since it's such an older video this is pretty much irrelevant, but the way you added the paper it looks like you just bent it slightly and placed it between the battery shroud and the gpu. I'm not convinced that the paper wasn't butted up against the gpu fans instead of just blocking off the perforated battery shroud as you intended. At no point could you see the paper from the front which seems to support my hypothesis. That being said, even if my observation is correct it didn't make a difference with the overall goal of the test. I just thought it was sloppy test methods, which again didn't interfere with the end goal. Just my ocd kicking in.

Thank you, I just put my setup in a smaller case, and it's about 24mm above the bottom of the case, or PSU shroud if you will, but it goes most of the bottom of the case, and I wasn't sure if this would be bad for the GPU. My temps, honestly didn't go up, OTHER THAN my GPU junction temps????? No idea how/why, but I swear on my life that is the only thing that changed..... Weird... Oh, one more mention, the GPU used to sit on a vertical mount in the bigger case, and now it is horizontal or normal, whatever you wanna call it. Anyway, thanks for the video, it makes me rest easier.

No, but thermal throttling does...
@GothaRsk6 жыл бұрын
With at least one fan in front and one in the back you will have enough airflow. LTT did 2 videos related to this with conclusive results. One, that 2 fans are enough (intake and exhaust) and second one that cable management and blocked GPU/CPU fan don't matter. 1. Case Fans - How many should you have? 2. Cable Management - Does it impact cooling performance? At all?...

In my Fractal Design Node 202, my temps suffered with an EVGA 1080ti FTW3, thermal throttling. Once I added 2 fans sandwiched with the gpu, it went bloody well.
@Kabirr6 жыл бұрын
Well, I think if you redid (after restarting) it without the case side panel, the Temps would come down. See, what happens is when you're at 74c and 65% fan usage, your gpu software says "OK, so this is how hot I am it's not that bad" When you remove the paper it says "whew, some breathing room so let me dial down the fan a bit. I could cool it even more, but that'd just take more energy" When you remove the side panel, "wow, it's gonna be pretty cool, and I could make it cooler but I'm too lazy and the Temps are still fine! Don't fix what ain't broke. I'll let it be" It's all relative, as your gpu temp goes down from the max temp your gpu goes "cool man, at least I'm not THAT hot anymore, it's fine" But when you do a restart, the gpu has no previous Temps to compare it to and it tries to give the best cooling it can on the first run. ^all this is ofcourse what happens in the software of gpu, I find these dialogues a much easier way to explain what I'm trying to say. So,yeah.
@Sevicify6 жыл бұрын
Well before he removed the panel the temp fluctuated from 73-74c with 55-56% fan speed and 1924-1911 core clock (dropped down as he was talking), after removing the panel it was 71-72c with 57% fan speed and stable 1924 on the core. So the temp did decrease which allowed it to maintain a higher core clock possibly with a higher voltage too (pity he doesn't include this in the overlay) while still being a lower temp, and don't forget he mentioned the ambient room temp had slightly risen when he removed the paper so it's possible it may have increased further before this test. That said I agree that ideally it would be best to cool the GPU off between tests and start "clean" to reduce effects from pre-existing conditions, whether the results Jay saw in the last test would actually be much different however is another question.

Phanteks Evolve Shift! I have one and it is awful for non-blower GPU cooling. I currently run a 140mm rad push pull setup for intake/CPU cooling at the bottom with a single 140mm exhaust at the top. I have an EVGA ACX 970 and have max all 3 system fans to reach decent temps, while also adjusting the GPU fan curve. If I leave the fans on a normal curve, the GPU reaches 85c in seconds with normal gaming load. Switching to a blower style GPU is night and day with temps.

Pre-watch: I would think all that mattered was the amount of air going through the case. As long as a good amount of air was going over the components and then swiftly being grabbed by the exhaust fans, then it would be fine. Say, for example, a 70 to 75 degree room would be a nice benchmark, but in an Arizonan/Southern Californian summer, it would be a little bit worse. Choking airflow off from the internal components while it is already warm in the room would just be worst case scenario.

Jay one of the problems with the EVGA styled cooler is it likes to dump hot air mobo side causing that air with no where to go to get recirculated back though the fans till it gets exhausted out the opposite side. Odd enough I took a small server fan and mounted it at the end of the card and mobo from what I noticed the temps came down because the fan was clearing the hot air out the pocket gap trapping the hot air causing the GPU to recirculate it back through the cooling system. Larger case fans don't seem to clear that vortex from the system, making the GTX card hotter than what it could be.
@larrygall58316 жыл бұрын
I have no idea why some say front is bad location for rad. If the fans are blowing out, it's the most unrestricted exhaust besides the top.

69F = about 20.5C So a nice cool winters day? Summer here in Australia can be as low as 30C/86F and as high as 40C/104F, so how much does ambient temp change things? Also with a front mounted Rad even if you don't have cool air flowing, you still have air flowing across the card and out the case through the rear fan. It would be interesting to repeat this test with a stock/tower cpu HSF, and no front/rear case fans.
@MsNikkieMichelle6 жыл бұрын
Interesting video Jay. Its a informative video for people who maybe don’t have a lot of space for a mid to full tower or want the aesthetics of a small form factor but not skimp on some of the bells and whistles. What about instead of 240mm radiator, put a 120mm radiator with push/pull, on the upper front and a fan intake bellow, so the air from this one could flow into the PSU cage and bring fresh air to the GPU through the holes.

Speaking of small form factors and cooling... My first PC Build: Silverstone Sugo SG09 with: i7 6850K (with "be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3" cooler) Corsair Vengeance LPX Black DDR4 PC17000/2133MHz CL13 4x16GB ASUS X99-WS/SE 2x GTX 1080 Ti Fe 2x Samsung 850 Evo MZ-75E500B/EU 500GB SSD in RAID 0 2x Seagate Ironwolf ST2000VN004 64MB 2TB 3,5" in RAID 1 and a "be quiet! Power Zone 1000W CM" PSU I have these 5 fans and they are from "be quiet!" and has "PWM" control: 2x 120mm Silent Wings 3 PWM 2x 92mm Silent Wings 2 PWM 1x 80mm Silent Wings 2 PWM The top fan is the 180 mm Air Penetrator though. *@Idle (gpu.clock 139Mhz, mem.clock 495Mhz):* Room temp: 22C Card 1: Choking card: 33C Card 2: Lower card: 22C (@ room temp) Both fans are at 23% according to MSI Afterburner. *During load (powLimit 100%, Temp.Limit 84C, fanLimit 50%:* The choking card falls from 1835Mhz to 1480Mhz back and forth. The lower card stays stable at 1835Mhz at 73C *@forced 60% Fan speed on both* choking card is at 1835Mhz to 1480Mhz at 84C The lower card @60C 1847Mhz *@forced 70% Fan speed on both* choking card is bounces 1733Mhz to 1771Mhz at 84C The lower card @57C at 1847Mhz *Summary:* So I'm definitely having trouble getting air to the sandwiched card and/or maybe the lower card takes most of the air and blows it out. An other problem I'm having is that all PWM fans are found and controlled in BIOS (PWM selected, not DC), but not a single software finds them or can access them in Windows 10. *And fun fact:* BIOS uses CPU temp to control case fans, but the CPU is not under much load when I max GPUs. CPU cores are 2C (@24C) over room temp at Idle. And even during 100% load (for 18minutes): 43 to 45C on the cores (40C on motherboard and socket)... this means the case fans stays at lowest RPM, giving GPUs crappy cooling. I've been thinking about a manual Fan controller, but I have no place to mount it on the case. Even if I would use just a Potentiometer. (I Don't want to mod the case).
