xD I think it's given the age group (and on average of all the age groups). So maybe in 1000 people who don't like spicy food at say, age 55, 100 people die. Whereas in 1000 people who do like spicy food at age 55, only 86 people die. And maybe it's different for all the ages, but on average, 14% less spice-lovers die compared to their spice-denying heathens at the same age group. Or maybe that 14% is averaged from a whole bunch of other controls beyond age.

The best thing about this is that if you're someone who hates spicy food (I was one of them) you can learn to love it! The first step is to stop being irrationally afraid of it and realize it isnt actually causing you harm, it just tricks your brain into seeming like pain. Start small. Get some basic hot sauce and add it to foods you like. Just a little at first, then more until it becomes too easy. Then you can move onto hotter things! You can control the level of spice you experience, and get better and better at handling it. The more you have, the less it hurts. You can build a tolerance, and it could be good for you.

In a physiology class, the lecturer mentioned Hormesis, the small bump most poisons have in their toxicity curve that makes them beneficial in tiny doses. The belief, as I understand it, is that a low dose of a poison triggers a generalised immune response to clear the danger, and ends up taking out some incidental infections along the way, decreasing your chance of dying from all causes. I have believed, since then, that hot spices and similar foods trigger a small enough response to not kill you, but big enough to trigger the Hormesis effect. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormesis

1:00 "Had a 14% lower risk of death than..." Yeah well uhm... how do you measure risk of death if it's inevitable? Is there missing something? Like: Risk of dying of a young age?
@lauramitrea6 жыл бұрын
They probably mean that you are 14% less likely to die than the group who did not like spicy food. If the data was collected over a number of years, some of the participants will have died in the meantime. If 50 out of 1000 people died in the non spicy group, and ok not 43 out of 1000 people died in the spicy group, then 14% fewer people died in the spicy group. So based on this study, we'd expect you to be 14% less likely to die if you eat spicy. Though this doesn't sound particularly rigorous. Also, worth noting that the risk of death is specifically measured over that time period over which data gathering happens. Not overall. Humans have a 100% lifetime risk of dieing.
@Roll5876 жыл бұрын
You would probably measure age at death for participants in each group and then use a cox proportional hazards model for analysis of the data.
@jeythegrey6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but what doesn't add up is, that "risk of death" isn't solely dependent on what you eat... Basing the statistics of life of 500'000 people simply on what they ate is somewhat unreliable.
@lauramitrea6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's why correlation =/= causation. And that's why they said in the video that this is not by any means conclusive. The issues you have with this video would be brought up in any discussion section of the paper she was talking about. Any scientific paper needs to look very critically at its shortcomings in order to be taken seriously. It's not just somewhat unreliable, it's incredibly unreliable, but it's still a worthwhile observation if it leads to people asking more questions and doing better research around it.

My first thought is simply that people who eat spicy food are more likely to cook for themselves, eating a greater variety of fresh vegetables. As you say, with only a dataset to go on, it's impossible to establish causality. Also, unless specifically asked about hot peppers, "spicy food" may made spicy by the inclusion of many other ingredients than capsaicin.

There are many studies that also *correlate* the intake of spicy food and the amount of calories consumed. It's thought that spicy food, or at least those who like spicy food (hence the correlation) need more gustatory stimulation overall to feel satisfied. It could be that the capsacin overstimulates the trigeminal nerve and that this may be a reason why. But just like these studies, the relationship is not causal. Btw, I love spicy food; the thought of going a day without it sounds terrible. I am of normal BMI, though I feel I eat too much.

after having travelled a bit I had one another bit different hypothesis.look at the places, which traditionally have spicy food in their cousines. Those are frequently sub-tropical, tropical places. You don't find many peppers or other equivalent in Scandinavia, russian cuisine also isn't really famous for it. On the other hand, Mexico and latin America, China, Southeast-Asia....(don't know too much about africa to be honest) these places are crawling with bacterias and parasitas. capsaicin induces a lot of secretion of body fluid where it goes through, saliva, intestinal fluid after eating a spicy meal and also gastric juice aka hydrochlorid acid, which traditionally forms a bit of barrier for pathogens. maybe it's BS, it's just an idea.
@antaraanikapiya2 жыл бұрын
Every place has pathogens, but they may differ according to the regions. I would rather ask you to look for the number of obese people, people with cancer, diabetes,heart disease etc. and you would find these numbers to be smallef compared to the regions in west or the colder regions in the planet. Asia and Africa that has spice rich foods in their diet they are much leaner and have a rather higher immunity from a lot of diseases than an apparently fit looking westerner.

Hey the weirdest thing happened to me at school. We were told to run around the gym in a circle and all at once we all ran in a counter clock wise direction, why is that??? The teacher never said which direction and i was wondering what the science behind that is.

You should have also pointed out the negative research on spicy food / capsaicin. There seems to be a positive correlation with esophageal and gastric cancer.

Probably worth mentioning that Sichuan peppers don't have capsaicin, and a lot of spicy dishes in China features Sichuan peppers as a primary spicy ingredient. That should probably be its own study since the big database came from China.

I went to the grocery store beside the Ace Hotel in Pasig, Metro Manila while visiting, and they sold 5-packs of the 2x spicy ramen everyone was challenging themselves with a while back. So I bought a 5-pack 4 days before flying back home. I only ate 3 of them because I couldn't eat any the day before flying back. I don't get the second-day burn, but I do get 16-hour bouts of Montezuma's Revenge immediately after eating super spicy food. (Jalapenos aren't spicy.) That 2x spicy ramen made the top of my head sweat.

Correlation does not equal causation. It's just as likely that a given persons ability to tolerate spicey food is an indicator of their lifespan. So, spicey food doesn't extend life but people with longer lifespans prefer spicey foods. - That said, I do think that spicey food is healthy. Just playing devils advocate here.

I have to assume you didnt watch the video since they spent the entire last half of the video pointing that out as well as the various limitations and shortcomings of the study. So thanks I guess for repeating what they said for other people who dont watch the video.
