Following a life threatening illness (given 48 hours to live at one point) I ended up with high cholesterol levels. As a result I was told to avoid dairy products and eggs (I was already ovo-lacto-vegetarian). My levels of cholesterol continued to rise, and one day I decided that if I was going to die, I might as well die happy. I started eating cheese, butter, full fat milk and eggs. Within days my cholesterol levels began to drop. Now I am off medication and my levels are in the lower half of the "normal" range. In total, 12,763 males, 40-59 years of age, were enrolled as 16 cohorts, in seven countries, in four regions of the world (United States, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Japan). One cohort is in the United States, two cohorts in Finland, one in the Netherlands, three in Italy, five in Yugoslavia (two in Croatia, and three in Serbia), two in Greece, and two in Japan. The entry examinations were performed between 1958 and 1964 with an average participation rate of 90%, lowest in the US, with 75% and highest in one of the Japanese cohorts, with 100%.[8] The study has continued for more than 50 years." source: Wikipedia

About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. My triglyceride level was double the threshold of what was considered high. Yet, I was only considered overweight and not obese. Two years ago I changed my diet to mostly fresh vegetables, lean meat such as chicken, and eventually replaced sugar with honey in things like coffee. I only allowed sweets once a week as a treat, but continued with drinking 2-3 alcoholic beverages a day (red wine every day). The other big thing was exercise with running three times a week. Six months in I started lifting weights three times a week. I dropped 30 pounds (lost fat, but gained muscle), dropped to roughly 17-18% body fat, and lowered cholesterol and triglycerides to "healthy" levels without medication. Learned that my triglyceride level was from eating grains so I limit those significantly and rarely eat any bread whether while grain or not. As has been said for decades, a healthy diet and exercise was key. I translate healthy diet to mean things that have not been processed. Keep it simple, keep it balanced and make one meal a day a salad. Hard boiled eggs are your friend.

My energy levels go up. the only issue I have with low carb diets is that they're hard to do because carbs are in pretty much everything. So it makes it hard to eat out or eat on the go. You have to plan ahead for so much. But it's worth it. I've been back on a low carb diet for only 2 weeks and I've already lost 10 pounds. Carbs are the least satiating of the 3. Protein, then fat, then carbs. Lots of people feel hungry eating lots of carbs, especially if it isn't in complex form because it raises blood sugar which prevents the "full" signals from working properly. In fact, sugar itself maybe less the correlation of increased health risks and more because we tend to eat more calories in general, often from nutrient poor sources because you end up craving them more. That said, high carb or low carb diets work equally well for weight loss because they effectively both cut calories, as that's the only way to actually lose weight in the broad spectrum. So do anything that cuts calories and try to eat nutrient dense foods for health.

You lost weight because you re in caloric deficit, not because fat is healthier than sugar. I believe in two types of diet that aren’t really compatible with each other: 1- a full fat, meat and vegetables diet. Ideal in a cold environment, probably what our ancestors ate during the ice age 2- a plant based diet with low amounts of meat, heavy in carbohydrates and low in fat Combining a lot of animal fat with carbohydrates, which is basically the American diet, tends to make the human body accumulate fat in all parts of the body, including its arteries (cholesterol) which lead to an increase in coronary diseases. My experience tells me that you should choose one and stick to it, but considering the way that meat is produced nowadays, it’s healthier to just adopt a plant based diet with low density of meat products. However sugar which is basically processed empty calories should not be consumed in excess either. To further prove my point of the incompatibility between a diet heavy on carbohydrates and meat(saturated fat), it is proven that diabetes is caused by the accumulation of fat around the cells, which decreases the processing rate of glucose, leading to high sugar levels in the blood. Animal fat (saturated) is dangerous because of its viscosity. Plant fat (unsaturated) is much less viscous therefore flowing easily with the blood and not accumulating around cells.

In regards to meat, in Denmark we have a (bio/"økologisk")mark on the meat package which signals that the animals have certain rights in regards to how much space they had, and they've living outside. The problem with this topic is that there is so much information that there's no way to tell it in 13 minutes. Things like: The 7 countries study had 21 countries but Ancel Keys threw out the data that didn't fit his hypothesis. Early studies of saturated fats used hydrogenated fats because they were easier to work with. Most "high fat" diet studies actually had medium high fats AND medium high carbs and ignored the action of insulin. We've been led down a health path by companies selling us sugary foods - researchers have been defunded for trying to research the "wrong side". One thing I find interesting. I grew up through this whole mess of the USDA (dept of Agriculture, why are they talking about diets?!?!) and never once did anyone say what cholesterol is, only that it's bad. no they dont, please stop making blurbs because you heard it somewhere and have no evidence or expertise to support it. that doesnt mean that its all bad or even most, most research has shown that its one particle type of one of the types of cholesterol that is bad and that other dietary cholesterol can be helpful in terms of hormone production, making up brain matter, etc. i think what you mean is that dietary cholesterol has not been shown to affect cholesterol levels considerably, which is true, but there are other uses for dietary cholesterol in the body such as i mentioned. my own cardiologist(born with an issue) went into detail about how low cholesterol diet recommendations have lead to increased dementia from diminished brain mass and function due to this diet recommendation, so its really quite a lot more complicated than one little blurb that is not really accurate if you want to stay healthy. especially as you get older or in infants during developement, that dietary cholesterol becomes very important to the brain since it actually makes up the tissue of the brain.

Energy balance is number one. If you are overweight try getting to a healthy weight. The specifics of your diet will have a much smaller effect on your health. Once you are at healthy weight try to get enough protein. Eat Whole Foods and little processed foods, try to reduce excessive amounts of sugar and saturated fats. Get some high quality fats like olive oil and nuts and try to eat all kinds of fruits and vegetables, even better if they come in all different colors and flavors.

Can attest to that. When I finished my service, I was overweight and borderline obese. I didn't really try to diet it off as much as I just started eating what I love to eat at home before the military - which is mainly meats - chicken and beef, together with lots of veggies and fruits. In the military, what I ate was mostly heavy carbs because they were the only things cooked and prepared in an edible manner. I never really liked spaghetti, potatoes or whatever, so my diet naturally leaned towards the high fat low carbs side, and not only did I lose weight rapidly - down 24 kilos in 3 months, I stopped feeling hungry and snacking all the time unlike during the military and started even having moments where I felt so full I sometimes forgot to eat lunch.

Agreed. And higher food costs for the consumer will be compensated for by lower healthcare and enviromental costs for the tax payer. But the main reason why I like the idea of a tax is to create incentives for the food industry to invent new foods that taste sweet without over-using sugar. If they could just reduce the amount to sugar down to healthy levels we would no longer have this healthcrisis. So I think they can start using Hermastas, Stevia and other methods to make their food sweet. This will of course not be liked by the food companies at first since it costs money to invent new products and recalibrate perfectly fine tuned products with a certain amount of sugar, fat and salt in them. And the stock markets and consumers will protest if the food producers try to do the right thing on their own alone. Both Nabisco and Coca Cola tried to stop childhood obesity, but then other companies tried to steal their marketshares and profits fell - which made people on the stockmarket angry and they threatened to sell their shares and go to a competitor if they didn't stop trying to save the world. So the only way to fix this problem is to force all companies to play by the same rules. And a sugar tax is the way of doing that. And many insiders withing the food industry supports this idea. Even Howard Moskowitz - which is the man who have invented 90% of all the food on the shelves at our grocery stores, think that the industry needs to take more responsiblity. And he think that it is possible to invent healthier foods.

Simple carbs are more evil than complex carbs (sugar is the simplest carbohydrate) but white bread is not too far behind which leaves us with sayings like "the whiter the bread; the faster you're dead". Other diseases, like BeriBeri, were first coupled with people eating polished white rice. Some other facts are never discussed: for example, I have never heard an instance of someone going blind or having toes (or feet, or legs) amputated because of a high fat diet but this is common with excess sugar. On top of that, many people are encouraged to drink fruit juices because they are natural. But those products should be "considered processed" as soon as the fiber was removed. Anyone can drink a large container of fruit juice but very few of us would be able to eat more than one large apple or orange.

Fats are not bad. Body fat is broken down for energy via lipolysis, and insulin stops this process. Large amounts of carbohydrates cause insulin to be released stopping lipolysis this means you will stop using fat reserves as energy and use carbs instead. This is not a weight loss diet, but it does happen.

@dgoyena2166 жыл бұрын
He said micros not macros. The constant Diarrhea is pretty common for people on keto within their first few months. After a while their bowel movements start to be normal as they become adapted to the diet. And becoming adapted is dependent on the person. Some can take as little as a few months, but some can take quite a bit longer than that. Then there is a whole other part of the adaptation portion of the diet called keto-adaptation. This is when your body has adapted to fat utilization and maintain a mild state of ketosis, and this can take up too a year for some to utilize fatty acids efficiently.

9:21 The two causes of insulin resistance (and thus diabetes) are being overweight (fat spillover into the blood) AND high dietary saturated fat intake (which leads to lipotoxicity and the dysfunctional regulation/storage of sugar by insulin). Eating added sugar exacerbates insulin resistance but is not the cause of it! Saturated fat intake and being overweight cause insulin resistance and diabetes.

Awesome video and just adding onto the final conclusion I think looking at specific nutrients like this might be missing the point. I think specific foods are the problem, not the nutrients in them. For example, we all kind of inherently know that a baked chicken thigh is healthy while a highly processed sausage snack like a slim jim is bad for us, even though they have pretty similar nutritional info, both with a fair bit of saturated fat. Same for eating candy vs a fruit, both have a fair bit of sugar.

All sweeteners will cause the pancreas to secrete some insulin because its the nervous system being stimulated by something sweet in the mouth preparing the digestive system for something it assumes will be high in glucose. Sugar alcohols like maltitol will have more of an effect on insulin than stevia for example
