We just had 3 mornings of 27 degrees here in Napa Valley, Zone 9, Supertunia's didn't miss a beat. I don't cut mine back until I see some new growth which tells me they're still alive.

That's a smart plan!!! Sometimes my OCDness overtakes me and I just have to CUT them!! hahaha!

I just ordered my first proven winners supertunias. I saw they are not annuals for zone 10 & 11. So glad to see yours have come back. I have a hanging basket of regular petunias and this will be the third year so I'm looking forward to the supertunia that don't need to be dead headed. Thank you for your videos on California zone 9b. I'm am a couple hours south of your location and happy i found your channel.

How often do water in the winter?

OMG so happy to have found your channel..I am in bay area too and have a hard time finding information for zone 9b. I must have googles for hours trying to figure out if supertunias are perennial in our zone or not?

Yay! So glad you are here! I hope you find it helpful!

@@PowertotheFlower absolutely!!! Beautiful garden and loved the flower bed and containers you did for the church. Are dahlias, phlox, and echinacea also perennials in our zone?
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
@@pretty95138 ❤️❤️ Dahlias and echinacea typically are perennials in zone 9 but phlox is really dependent on variety in my experience!

Hello from Ontario, California, Zone 9-10. Just came across your channel and so glad I did. Supertunias: just planted some in November and they have "over-wintered" through some heavy wind storms plus rain. Only one struggling; the others are doing great! Even though you're way north it will be good to follow you since you get hot summers and I'm curious, as a new gardener, what grows well in your area. Past summer I planted a healthy foxtail fern in the ground with full sun. It has survived with daily watering last summer.
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
hello there Ontario!! I have found similar results with the foxtail fern in the sun! It's so fun to try things, right?!

Can you do an update on your supertunias?

This is great! Thank you so much for sharing! Can't wait to try it. I might have missed it in your video... when did you cut them back? I'm assuming December or January.
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
I cut back when they look bad. The ones in the ground from this video I cut back in December. The ones in the wine barrels…I think in Nov. There isn’t a wrong time…except maybe right before a hard frost like we just had! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 If they are looking good I have also not cut them back until Feb…so they bloomed through winter and then I cut them in Feb in anticipation of spring. I like them all fresh and green and in a little ball shape when Spring comes. Really can depend on the microclimate they are in!!! But generally speaking, Nov/December time is when I do it!!!💪🏼🌸

Great info for supertunias. I just purchased two of them. I overwinter my salvias in zone 9 Florida. Do you have other "annuals" that come back?
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
Definitely salvia! Sedum (like Lemon Coral Sedum by proven winners as well), geraniums, tons of stuff! That’s honestly why I started this channel! 🤣🤣 Zone 9 is amazing! And a mystery! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

I just ordered several Supertunia Bubblegums from PW. I live in Houston, TX (Zone 9A). Wondered if your area freezes? If so, do you cover yours? Also, have you tried collecting seeds and resowing them? Not sure if the seeds are sterile. Thanks for your post! Glad to have found you!

Hey Julia! So happy to have you here in our zone 9 community! We are 9b and get down to about 25. We had a week long 29’F a few weeks back and I did not cover them. They didnt skip a bear and are now blooming. That said, those kind of lows are rare and come and go. Most days we hover around 35-40ish. Also, I had transplanted some stuff a month before and may have lost a few during the freeze…but that was a risk I knew I was taking. 🤣. These plants are sterile.💪🏼🌸

San Diego zone 10 here...Mine overwinter really well too. Only problem is this fake spring weather. Last week we got down to 34 and 35 for night time temps and one of them was partly supper crunchy. This also happens in supper HOT summer temps where they put themselves in sleep mode. Do you notice any difference between ground planted petunias and pot planted petunias?
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
Good point! I think that Bubble Gum that’s partially brown in this video had the cold temps problem! It does happen! But cutting back and regrowing is a great option that we mild winter gardeners can do! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

How many years do you have to replace them? Or do they come back e dry single year?
@DeeDeeDeeLu2 жыл бұрын
I’m in Zone 9. Had one for 2 years but this year it looked so dry and hard so I threw it out
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
I have many of mine going on year 4. This winter we are in currently has been very dry and I think the ones I lost were do to not watering during long dry spells. I do replace the ones I lose...since they are fairly inexpensive at Lowes and Home Depot that is super awesome!! But the fact that they do often winter over is what I wanted to let people know about...it's so exciting!!!
@rsqadry2 жыл бұрын
I emailed Proven Winners after learning from Cara that I can overwinter them in my zone 9b/10a and they responded that the supertunias probably won't perform the same after year 2 and will need to be replaced however, based on Cara's experience it looks like they can go for longer. I look forward to trying it out.
@DeeDeeDeeLu2 жыл бұрын
@@rsqadry thanks for the info. I read the same when I was wondering if they would make it year after year. I haven’t been lucky with them lasting after 2 years but maybe I’ve given up too soon. Or maybe they just don’t look as good so I just replace them.
@PowertotheFlower2 жыл бұрын
@@rsqadry oooh! Interesting. Some of mine are going in year 4!! Maybe I am just lucky or have low standards. 😂😂 Def let us know your experience!
