Brad Holmes has said from day 1 he is going to build through the draft and draft BPA for long term success. Like a lot of good teams in the league, they are drafting for 2-3 years in the future. They aren't going to go load up on huge UFA contracts. So far, Holmes has only used FA to round out the roster. I don't see a reason why he wouldn't continue to do that and he's spoken about it and still says draft is where the team will be built. He's had ample opportunity to go get guys at positions of needs and has went with the more conservative options instead. Davenport vs Hunter, CJGJ, Amik, Zeitler, etc. There are no bad contracts (contracts for players that aren't performing) and small dead cap coming up. This team is built for sustained success in years to come.

Dan Campbell not kicking that field goal to go up 17 in the NFC Championship game may haunt this team for a long time. Extending Jared Goff also may come back to haunt them. I worry the Lions are going to be 2024 regression candidates.

I agree. Failing to add points and blowing a big lead is eerily similar to the Falcons' SB loss to the Pats. IIRC, Campbell also made several other very aggressive play calls that did not work out. I also agree about Goff. I would love for him to win a SB because I think he got a raw deal from the Rams. However, I am not convinced he has that extra clutch factor to elevate the team to a SB win.

No, the window is still open. The roster is also significantly better on the defensive side and the offense didn't lose a step.

@@huntermanikas6881 I didn't say across the board. I said "significantly better on the defensive side and the offense didn't lose a step." They didn't improve much on offense or the Linebacking corps, but they didn't regress, either. The secondary is significantly improved. Not sure about the D-Line, but it certainly didn't get worse with the addition of Reader, and having corners who can cover will certainly help with sack production. If Jake Bates can be consistent, that will absolutely be an improvement over Badgley.

@@huntermanikas6881D-line now ranked 4th, O-line ranked 1st or 2nd, CB room total overhaul with draft of 2 of top 4-5 CBs. Added CB1 in Davis, former starter in Robertson. Oline improved with Zeitler over Jackson. 👀🤣

@@huntermanikas6881I mean, the offense was good and they kept those pieces. The defense of last year was the floor so they could only get better. All that got us a couple missed 4th down completions/FG opportunities to a Super Bowl.

What do you think about the new Decker contract? 3 years 60 million. So 4 more years of decker. If zietler is good and willing I'd love to see him get a 2 year contract. I think alim McNeil will be the next big contract. And ragnow pretty soon also

I think the Lions have a 9 year window to win the Super Bowl. Jared Goff will be 38, and everyone else is young.

They have as much draft capital as every other team. Furthermore, FA players want to play for Detroit. Lastly, every team has injuries, that is why we have depth players.

I remember last year in the final game of the regular season the lions got the ball with under a minute with big lead and opponent had no timeouts. Instead of taking knees they line receivers out in the flats. They throw 4 or passes in a row to Josh Reynolds and no one else. Turned out he needed 3 or 4 catches and 10 yards to get a quarter million dollar bonus. Players will take a team friendly deal to play in that organization

We made it far in the playoffs and we had a horrible defense. We have 6 new players in the defense this year and they are so much better than last year’s players. We have to make it to the SB. If we don’t it’s because of injuries. 💥💙

Lions have been getting more hate the more people talk up this team. I’ve seen people blame that on the fans, but 95% of the time, the fans are just excited for the next year and being division champs. Of course the hype is going to be real, because that team got far as hell with one of the worst defenses all year.

Brad holmes is building the lions a whole lot smarter than anyone on KZbin can understand. Lol I won't be shocked if he can keep a great team together for 5 or more years the way he's drafted and set these contracts up. You just need to get used to the idea of the lions being a perennial contender for the next handful of years

The main window is the next 3 seasons. As you stated, after 2026 - guys like Hutch, Ragnow, LaPorta and Branch will be due, will be tough to pay everyone at that point - especially with Goff taking up a ton of the cap starting in 2026. Can restructure and stuff but it will be very hard to keep the main pieces when the QB makes that much (I really wanted them to just keep Goff at current salary this year followed by 1-2 franchise tag years - could’ve seen if Hooker was going to be something by that point. But alas, here we are. The dilemma of paying exorbitant amounts or moving on from your good but not Mahomes level franchise QB.)
