Though not many of us know it, a whole lot hinges on our first 1 000 days. This time period is crucial as it affects areas such as physical growth, peer skills as well as emotional and social development.
DeeDee Yates is a recognised world expert focusing on vulnerable children and families
including those affected by HIV and AIDS. Starting in 1985, her passion for children
brought her into the field of early childhood development.
Her career started as the early childhood development coordinator for the Anglican
Church in Namibia, supporting their twenty-five kindergartens in rural areas of northcentral
Namibia as well as in Katutura.
She also helped establish the Children’s
Desk at the Council of Churches and acted as the coordinator from 1990 to 1996. After working for the Ford Foundation in Namibia, she became a full time
consultant.
She has done several studies on the quality of programmes for children in
Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Uganda,
Kenya, and Rwanda, and has several publications. She also has served to the Government of Namibia for several years as a Technical Advisor in Early Childhood Development.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Everyone who is expecting a child should watch this. I have so many regrets about my children’s early years. They were not abused, but I can see now how the way my wife and I dealt with them when they were very young affected their development. They have lowered self confidence, are not as motivated to excel, and have no direction / know what they want to do in life. My biggest goals now revolve around undoing our poor parenting, and building their confidence and mental capacity to be well-adjusted adults. Hopefully I’ll live long enough to see those goals succeed. A good video to accompany this would be education on HOW to be a good parent and how to deal with the stress of those early years.

Golden advice. Next to nutritional and physical care this is most important investment you can make to help your child maximize their potential. Dads - take the time - help raise a happier child.

This is a great way to feel depressed when you know you didn't get the best times in that critical period and there wasn't a damn thing you could do about it. Should you just give up?

Studies have shown that character personalities make some children more resilient, who actually end up beating the odds and succeeding in life despite their poor upbringing! Read Berk EL's Development through the lifespan edition 4,page 10.

Give up if you want to or work towards recreating yourself/ your life. It's your choice to make a difference; it's probably a habit to "just give up". There's a saying: "the best revenge is success." Good luck! xx

Continual insufficient nutritional intake and exposure to violence, for example, is not good for brain development. This is muuuch different than growing up in a neighborhood with low real estate values after dad leaves.

I rather not stare at the people in the audience. If I’m at a lecture my full attention is toward the speaker. Maybe TED wants to show the different demographics of the audience. Frankly, It’s a bit distracting looking at others and their stale faces lol

The video begins with a self-contradiction. It states that the aim is a more "equal society," then pictures someone winning a race. Do we want all races to end in a TIE? If equality is the goal, why feature someone winning over others? But first, why is equality a goal? We can be "equally" mediocre. And if "equality" is the goal, it's more easily obtained by reducing everyone to the same level. No, equality is not a worthy goal.
