We discuss the Red Sox’s search for another top starter. With Corbin Burnes still unsigned, what’s the holdup? Are we surprised that Max Fried went first to the Yankees? Could the Sox swoop in and land Burnes or another top name?
We also look at other free-agent candidates, including Walker Buehler, Jack Flaherty, Sean Manaea, and Nick Pivetta. Plus, we dive into potential trade options-could the Sox make a move for Luis Castillo from Seattle or Jared Jones from Pittsburgh?
Tune in to hear our thoughts on what the Red Sox pitching rotation could look like in 2024, with Tom Caron and Alex Speier, here on 310 to Left! For the full episode of 310 To Left, click here: bit.ly/4iGX5IZ

It seems this offseason is gonna go same way the last 5 years, be on a player but don’t expect to really get the players. Is the same from the last 5 years…

My persistent question: why spend $190million for a chance at the last wildcard when you could spend 220 for a chance at the division? If you're an owner worth 7 billion dollars, why spend so much only to come so short? Feels like The Red Sox have gone from a passion project to a spreadsheet item within a large conglomerate. Sports franchise owners need to be a bit apart from pure pragmatism and accounting. They need to be a bit closer to a win at all costs ethos. They owe that to the fans. If not, put your money into hedge funds and let people with *love* have a shot. This doesn't mean i advocate for pure blindness, but the Sox have been at/near the basement for far too long, as a big market, historically significant franchise. An inexcusable length of time without contending. What bothers me most is that we still seem to be waiting for things to fall to us. The Yanks are proactive. They decide what they want, and they go after it. We're in the business of settling. Crochet doesn't excuse the 'process.' We gave up a lot of human capital for that. Ownership could have spent money for the same objective. Losing Teel seems to hurt right now-i hope there's a plan for catching.

To me trading for crotchet was all the proof I needed that this off Season was gonna just be more of the same. Ownership and the front office are still only looking at the cheapest way to do business. You don’t see the Mets, Yankees, dodgers operating with the same mind set as the Sox. I for one think the whole Juan Soto thing was just a sham. A dog and pony show. They knew whatever their final offer was it wasn’t gonna get the job done. And the organization collectively breathed a sigh of relief when he chose the Mets.
@CentaurusRelax314
@CentaurusRelax314 Ай бұрын
@ I feel that, though I’m nit 100% on board with all of it. I think there was genuine interest in Soto, but they were never going to be the high bidder. Coming in third was exactly my prediction: the Sox would want him and try but the offer would be more ‘considered and rational’ than the Yanks or Mets. The Yanks would offer silly money, and Cohen would offer stooopid money. That’s just how it was going to play out, and the Sox hoped the delta wouldn’t be so great and they could hope that Soto would compromise a little, give up a little money, because he wanted to be a part of the Sox/DR legacy. I guess the difference was too much though as a poor person I cannot understand how 60 million is important when you are getting over 500 million. At that level, I’d want to just choose where I wanted to go. Re Crochet… I thought trading for him was the plan since last season. That’s not the indicator of intentions this offseason. Giving up that much human capital for him represents a desire to win now. To me, whether they actually *pay money* for another top of the rotation guy will be the indicator. I feel like if we get a Burnes or Flaherty we have a good chance to win next year and can let the kids play (Anthony and Campbell) without worrying so much about their offensive production because we can suppress runs on the other side. We are entering a window with the young talent. I do agree the ownership is still in a mindset where they wanted to emulate the Rays’ ‘success on a budget,’ but realized it’s not just a simple formula, so they’re inching back up to being spenders. The problem is that the market is blowing up faster than they can evolve their thinking. Burnes wants too many years for his decline and age. We are likely to still be getting involved with compromises because of the fear of the biggest pitching contracts. We should have been more proactive-like the Yankees and Dodgers-in identifying targets and getting them and not just waiting for the market to come down and thus having to settle for third choices. Fried would have been a good get, but now we have to try to beat him.

Crazy how people can't seem to understand that a willingness to spend 700 mil on a generational talent doesnt equate to the willingness to spend 700 mil on the types of players that are available every offseason.

They SAID they wanted Soto... But they were purposely bidding knowing the Yankees, Dodgers and of course the Mets were also in it. I don't believe they had any intention on outbidding the Mets. They knew Steve Cohen would out bid them. But they could tell their fans " we tried". Then they said they were in on Max Fried. Gee, it just so happens they got outbid by the Yankees. How did you expect that to go? Now Corbin Burnes is sitting right there for the taking and of course there'll be some excuse. Corbin Burnes is the best pitcher on the market as far as I'm concerned. So they traded for Garrett Crochett, who is not proven yet and give up good young talent. They could have kept their young talent and shellec out some cash to get both Corbin Burnes AND Max Fried (they have the money, that they get from the fan base) for less than they would have paid for Soto without having to give up any talent. Even if Garrett Crochet turns out to be a real Ace as soon as they have to pay him real money they'll let him go. If any of you believe anything they've said after the last 4 years of lies you're fools. All they are going to look for are bargains and wash ups. They will not do what needs to be done. If they are really serious, they'll give Corbin Burnes the money he deserves, go out and get Hernandez or at least Santander and some real bull pen help. But I'll tell you right now. They won't do any of that. Why? Because they have no interest in doing what needs to be done. They have no interest in keeping their word. They have no integrity. Breslow is nothing more than one of their tools.

Ownership still has the bitter taste in their mouths from the David Price and Chris Sale contracts, that's why they aren't looking to deal out long term contracts for 30+ y/o starters. I personally think they are trying to be as responsible with THEIR money (remember it's not ours!) as they can by trading away minor league depth pieces (with the exception of Teel...) instead of just throwing millions out to just whoever is available this year. We've also got to remember that baseball is a marathon and you want to try to build a great team that's going to be together for a long time and one that is going to be young, talented, and controllable. Another thing that's being overlooked when I hear about them signing a big bat is the logjam at DH and the outfield... I believe that's why they haven't inked the deal with Teoscar or Santander yet. Yoshida needs to be moved to free up some lineup flexibility at the DH spot. A lot of people throw out their ideas without weighing the fact that each move has big effects on the future of the team. There are also so many moving parts to try to get these things done.

I like our schizophrenic pitcher, Pivetta, but IF you resign him, best sign a top pitcher, like Burnes, or another top pitcher BEFORE you resign Nick! Trust me resigning Nick will NEVER fly with the fans. Also, i would be so happy NOT to see Kutter on the Redsox list of pitchers entering spring training. USE the prospects to get Jones, Cherry knows he can't sign a bunch of great pitchers, so he's unloading, like he did with Cole once.
