The 308 dash will easily accommodate a single DIN stereo. Judging by the images the main wiring harness to the fuse panel is incorrectly positioned. It should run much higher and behind the dash protrusion right above the radio opening. If you do run a radio it is important to run a support from the back of the deck up to the dash support structure to help carry the weight. If not you will break the opening because it will be taking too much load. As for the window motors, the weak points are normally the rocker switches or the gearbox from the motor that winds the cable. This gearbox has a grease that turns to a thick putty. If you have the assemblies out, take off the covers and make sure that the grease is perfect otherwise take it apart and re-build it. The difference is huge. Also the rocker switches do go bad and introduce a lot of resistance. I replaced my rockers and cleaned my grease and my windows operate smooth and reliably. The original system is actually ok once sorted. The steering column switch is very common to break. Unobtanium supplies can re-cast the plastic and repair it. Replacement switches can cost north of $2000 so it is well worth having it repaired. Lastly, I understand that you are not after concours correct but that you would like what would be close to what came from the factory. Without getting into material minutia I can say that your A pillars, B pillars, and rear parcel shelf should be black like the dash and that the headliner would have been white vinyl. Cloth was used in much later cars which also carried to the rear parcel shelf and surround. Just an FYI.

Did the 308 have an option for hand cranked windows?
@benzina59173 жыл бұрын
@@apxl8r1 No 308's never had hand crank windows however the motor assemblies had a provision for a hand crank that was part of the tool kit. The factory door cards had a removable cover that you could pop off and insert the handle which would allow the windows to be raised or lowered manually if the motors failed.

My Ferrari's windows had the SAME issue, and through some diligent online research, I was able to locate some drawings and explanation on how to refurbish the cable-mechanism that raises and lowers the windows. A solid weekend of work restored 30-year-old Italian motors to like-new performance, and I'm a total novice when it comes to working on cars. The window motor take-up spool was originally lubed with grease - after many years, that grease gets VERY gummy and binds the window motor cable. Also, the pulleys deteriorate (also lubed with ancient grease). Cleaning and re-greasing the window-motor wire spool and replacing the pulleys makes a HUGE difference.

Love how the interior is coming together! For the turn signal, maybe you could fabricate a clamp made in two parts. The rear part would be shaped to fit around the existing metal near the wheel, then the stalk inserted, then the front part screwed into the back part holding it all together. You could mock it up using a 3d printer and then machine it in metal once you like it (because 3D plastic won’t hold up in car interior long term). I know it sounds like a lot of work, but turn signal sticks get a lot of use and it’s going to need to be able to handle a lot of actuation without falling apart. You probably have a lot of ideas that are better than mine, but I wanted to make a suggestion :-)

A factory one was $340. Got a 3D printed one for $80.

@@hojnikb Yea, it's a no brainer for someone working on rare cars with limited parts availability. It's just one more service they can offer their customers, and another money stream from online sales. I think you can find a large one in the $2,000-$4,000 price range. The cost of one simple part on some of these cars like the airbox. Print out 6 parts that usually cost $2,000, sell them for $800 and you've made back the cost of the printer and the supplies it took to print. Along with the one time cost of the programming file of the part if you have someone else do it. The total number of 308's sold is somewhere around 13,240. Finding 10 buyers of parts should be no problem at all. Sell 10 parts and you've made a tidy profit. Sell 20 parts @ $800 and you've made over $10,000 profit.

I suspect the wiring bundle that you are seeing in yours should be up higher, to give clearance to the radio. It was also a LOT easier to install the radio by first removing the vents from the panel below the radio, and pulling the duct free from the back. You haven't got that even installed yet, so not an issue for you.

Excellent video!!! you covered all the important points! I just drove both versions and heres my take: the four-door is a little less bouncy somewhat smoother, feels more like a urban assault vehicle than the quintessential Jeep. I have a German Shepherd that I want to take with me. you’re right, the seat in the two door just doesn’t come up much- it’s too bad they couldn’t figure out how to give more space to enter the rear seats ( perhaps having the passenger seat go up and forward) If the top was off on the two seater it would seem a lot room you’re back there. The is plenty of room ( im 5’ 10”) The two door is extremely agile and compact which is pretty cool for inner city driving. It just comes down to personal preference and what you need ;)

repacking the grease in the window motors always helps and needs to be done every couple of years in my experience with a mine - some early models came with aircon or a radio but not both perhaps thats what happened with yours before it was modified leaving the loom in the way.

Maaaaaybe the stock harness is easier to reroute than it is in most cars? Very doubtful that that’s the stock location, for the reasons you raised. Since you aren’t that concerned with OEM stock look you might prefer a set of modern retro look aftermarket seats, like a recaro specialist.

This would be an amazing car to buy. But I suspect the Wizard will never sell. He will enjoy with Mrs Wizard. And quite bloody right too. Grretings from the UK and thank you for the best content on the internet,

The last 308 I drove a lot in san diego had iffy windows 35 years ago. It really helped to lift up on the glass and center it to make it go up or down. You never did both sides at once. It would blow fuses.

Mr and Mrs Wizard, the 308 looks more and more splendid. Wizard, if you are really happy with your new bike, I for one, would like to see such good careful work there too.

JVC makes several great car stereos which are only about 3” deep, with adjustable colors to match any interior, all modern functions including Bluetooth, etc, and great reliability. And we definitely want a video on the Shovelhead.

This is very satisfying to see, a down to earth restoration. For the stereo, it would be very cool if you could source a retro look unit, like the Blaupunkt Bremen or the clarion m508, it would complement this dash very well

To all the people who said "that building is to big' just remind them Hoovie usually has at least 3 there and all other customers. Didn't he buy the building behind the shop too?
@darkiee693 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that space is rented out, like he said in the video.

One can never have too big of a building. NEVER.
@muskokamike1273 жыл бұрын
@@sp1nrx I went from a 600 sft shop to 1200 and within 3 months it was 2 small. I run a small woodworking business and you eventually buy more equipment to fill it up. But I can do more, it's called expansion. I'm currently waiting on tenants on either side to move out so I can rent out those spaces too.
