SHOW NOTES: sweetgeorgiaya...
This week, we launched new spinning course content by Katrina Stewart on the School of SweetGeorgia. Working with Katrina these past few weeks, we talked a lot about how important it is to spend "hands on" time with your spinning and how it is essential to improving your skills. Today, I'm talking about the benefits of "doing the work" and how it can affect your skills and creative life.

I had a teacher my first year of college that said everyone should have an IDG binder (I Did Good), so they can look back and see all the things they were proud of accomplishing. They said that when they feel depressed or like nothing is working out for them, they look through their IDG binder to remind themselves of the good things, of the good times. I started spinning before I learned to knit or weave, but when I finally decided to pick up some needles, I saved some of the yarn for each project that I completed. I put it on a card that has all the info of where I got the fiber, how I spun and plied it, and what I made it into. It's been especially nice to save a bit from projects that I've gifted to other people.

Great learning video. The tools of learning. I still go back to the learning skills to refresh my mind on what aspect of learning something that can improve my skills if what I know. When I teach some one in knowing trying, crocheting, weaving an they get discussed, i tell them u learn from ur miss givings an to start from the beging an move forward. I've even told them to make a scrap book of what they have done, I do this myself. That's how a person learns. Ur skills that u teach r so helpful. Ty

I struggle with imposter syndrome with my knitting, my crochet, weaving, and most especially spinning! I am working on it, but I am my own worst critic. I have to remember to trust myself and my ideas. I am looking forward to the new spinning class and the homework! I feel it will help me, as I am very doubtful as to how good my spun yarn is. Thank you!

For sure, we are our own worst critic. Sometimes I think the things we say to ourselves are things that we would never say to anyone... just need to be kind to ourselves. And it’s helpful to seek constructive feedback. That’s not the same as fluffy validation. Looking forward to seeing your spinning! Have fun with it!

You’re so smart, Felicia! I battled imposter syndrome all my life until a therapist pointed it out to me. I’m so much better now at being objective about my skills, but it takes practice, just like everything. Thanks for the reminder! And this class is exactly what I needed. It’s even going to help me put some structure in my week, which is still sorely lacking these days.

I appreciate this course SO much. It's what I've been dreaming of, after feeling like I'd plateaued, and didn't know where to turn to level up! I've dove in to the first module, and it's already taught me new things. Hopefully it will also teach me to practise. LOL

Thanks for that video, I like your " philosophical" thoughts. I agree that it is really important to practice, not only getting ideas from Pinterest.

I am soooo excited about this course!!! Been hitting my wheel almost everyday now spinning my default yarn (worsted prep, spun worsted, between fingering to dk weight). It will be awesome to be able to branch out and learn new techniques!

I love spinning so much that I own 3 Spinolution wheels. I need to work at being a more intentional spinner. Up to this point I have just spun to spin without an end goal to my finished yarn.

The book Mighty Ugly by Kim Werker is another one for helping quell inner critic voices! Dance was the fastest way for me to learn that there is no shortcut to just putting in the time to build the muscle memory and physical understanding of what I'm trying to accomplish - that's been helpful to apply elsewhere. :)

I would recommend watching any of the recent podcasts interviewing Seth godin about his book The Practice. He takes a slightly different, but i think important approach to imposter syndrome.

i am a novice weaver. i've been watching online classes while i've been restoring a couple older looms i purchased. i have some understanding but not the skill - yet. i have lots of ideas but lack the knowledge to create what i've been envisioning. so frustrating! i decided to make sett samples, started with plain weave at 12epi, went more open until the cloth was sleazy, then went up in as small an increment my current reeds will allow. it is fascinating the changes in the cloth even with such small differences in sett. i've now added twill.

I am a rigid heddle and tapestry weaver (well almost). I am at the beginner level and can spend hours each day reading, watching videos, and working through my online classes. I weave something, find mistakes, unweave it, and start over. Each time I do this I get better. I learning by unweaving! I love it. I am enrolled in Sweet Georgia school and have been going through the tapestry and weaving lessons. They are great! Thanks.

I feel proficient in knitting skills until I have to teach one! Ha. But I am very new at weaving so it takes me longer to get back to a new project as I am still not proficient at warping the loom. I also have to dodge cats and house traffic!

I started spinning in January, which meant I only got one class IRL. I actually ended up submitting some yarn I'd spun to a competition just so I could have someone hold the yarn, look at it, and give me feedback.
