I used to use compression but I took it off my board as I find compression promotes laziness in how your hands talk to each other. In terms of your final question, I relay heavily on our worship leader to get the songs we are doing a week or more ahead of time. This allows me time in the evenings to sit down and work out parts and give the songs a good listen as well.

One week in advance is a great lead time! Even just being able to listen and assimilate the song is doing a lot, and that can only be done with more lead time. I've been in a ministry where the songs come out the night before the service...sometimes an hour before service starts, during sound check!

@All About Worship Guitar I have as well, and it sucks! If you're a professional musician, you can probably pull it off. My church has a morning rehearsal, but we are expected to come prepared through practice at home.

Or if the songs are ubiquitous and can be played from memory (“Shout To The Lord”, “Heart of Worship”, etc). With some worship leaders and their styles you can sort of guess what repertoire they lean towards. Those with a vintage Hillsong background are admittedly easier to prep for even if their song choices are really late.

The whole “warm reverb” idea is really interesting mainly b/c I hear some ultra bright ‘verbs in newer songs like Gratitude that are in vogue, and my ‘verbs were very bright this year. Maybe I should setup an expression pedal to control the tone knob on my big sky presets?

I gotta check that song out! I'll admit, because my worship ministry doesn't do the latest songs, I'm usually lagging behind what's currently in vogue. The expression control is a great idea!

@@AllAboutWorshipGuitar I had an idea last night about doing 2 reverbs in series: 1st one would be a bright plate or room, heavy pre-delay, 30-40% mix (purpose would be to add nice sparkle only to the trail of the notes that would cut through the mix). 2nd delay would be a warm Hall with fairly long decay + high mix. It would be very DSP hungry lol but I’ll be able to do it in my POD Go into the big sky. Anyway, late night musings!

on your compressor, where do you set your attack and release times?

Hi! If I’m able to specify the attack and release times, I set them pretty mild: 10ms attack, 200ms release.

Make sure you take your time setting up at practice. The vocalists want to go get it over with and go home. Tney will complaiin about you and get you removed from the team.

And vocalists, make sure you come to practice without warming up, and not figuring out your vocal parts. The guitarists want to actually play the song and not repeat the intro a hundred times because you didn't do your homework. (Semi-serious sarcastic humour intended, rooted in real-world situations...)
