The song was written by Robert Lamm, the group's keyboard player, at 25 or 6 to 4 in the morning. 25 or 6 minutes before 4 AM.

They needed a new song, and that was what this song is about: staying up all night to write a song! Splashing his face - to keep awake to finish their work.

Yes... 25 or 6 to 4 was the time. Keyboardist Robert Lamm wrote this song... apparently, he looked at the clock (or his watch or whatever) and saw the time and got the inspiration for the song. A song about writer's block while experiencing writer's block is pure genius in my opinion!

25 or 6 to 4 It means: 25 or 6 minutes till 4am. They were still in the studio! (I’m 50 and always wondered the meaning… found out the meaning a year ago or so. The Terry Kath (lead guitar, long hair) era is absolute perfection. The band lost its balls after he died… yet still remained successful. Great work as always! And Viva la Kneepads!!!

Songwriter Robert Lamm was referring to the time of the morning that he was writing this song, either 25 minutes or 26 minutes to 4 AM (3:33AM or 3:34AM), he couldn't tell exactly where hands of the clock against the wall across the room were at. So 25 or 26 minutes to 4 was shortened in the lyrics to 25 or 6 to 4. Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will have you needing an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor! When they were "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He walked up to their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's better than me! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour.

Terry Kath on guitar rest in peace one of the greatest guitarist in my opinion and very underrated by a lot until they see this but the song is about the time In the morning hours 25 minutes or 6 to 4am in the morning Lot more complex than that but that’s what the title means it’s time but I love your analogy lol 4 to 6 inches to 25 😂

Hi sweetheart, thank you so much for doing this video. I haven’t heard this song in so long. Chicago is another brilliant band. Absolutely love them. I know the lead singer, Peter Cetera went out on his own for a bit but I will be honest whatever happened to him. I do not know. He did the song for karate kid three but the name of the song eludes me at the moment. Thanks once again for another great video and putting a smile on my face. Please take care and blessings to you from the UK.

Thank you so much for doing this song I love Chicago and this song pacifically because of Terry Kath rest in peace his guitar solos one of the greatest life solos I’ve ever heard Can you react to some more Chicago like their song you’re the inspiration that’s one of their 80s songs more vocals Because Peter Cetera was amazing in that decade because Terry Kath the guitarist had passed away in the late 70s by Peter Cetera Exploded onto the scene is like one of the best vocalist in the business so if you get a chance listen to your the inspiration or hard to say I’m sorry can’t go wrong with either Or my personal favorite hard habit to break thank you
