My family owns a summer business in Wisconsin that uses an honor system when we aren’t there. It’s a golf ball driving range with a disc golf course. We leave baskets of balls out (and clubs!) and people slip envelopes with their money thru the door slot. We find that 99% of people are honest so everything works fine. Many people take pride in being honest so I see why it works.

Your parents instilled great values, work ethics and sense of humor in you girls. In our part of the country, your inventory would be wiped out in a single night. I’ve heard of builders having the lumber stolen off their residential job sites. I do a lot of volunteer work for HfH. We’ve had the wiring and copper plumbing ripped out of the walls (on Christmas Day!) and the walls destroyed in the process. We pack up all the power tools each afternoon but don’t worry about small tools, ladders, anything heavy, etc. as they don’t sell quickly or bring the thief enough cash if he sells them. We now have multiple cameras and warning signs on each job site.

Ya, if they had a Homeless problem here, that wood would all be gone so they could build their shacks. Plus all the other entitled people. They haven't infested your area yet. So still a really nice area. Generally is it much better out in the country areas. People are still honest.

I have been running a self-serve nursery for 38 years. In all that time, I only had one major theft. In response to that one theft, I installed cameras. I accept checks and in all those years only one bad check. Often people leave a little extra.

Really great that you use the honor system and that your customers and neighbors "honor" your trust in them. I remember moving from PA to NC and we lived by a local Feed and Seed store and I needed some straw for my newly planted lawn. They weren't open on Sunday so when I went in on Monday, they told me that if I'm in that situation again I could just take whatever I needed and then come settle up the next day. I was shocked. As you mentioned, I certainly felt a higher sense of responsibility to do right by the owners so always made sure I settled up first thing the next business day.

It's great to live in a place where the 'honor system' works. Where I grew up (before everyone had cell phones), my parents never locked the back door of our house, or our detached garage. I once asked my dad why. "A neighbor might need to use the phone, or borrow a tool, or a little gasoline".

I see your raised bed boxes in this video out by the highway. That's one of the nicest raised bed gardens I've ever seen and knowing the material it's made from - the longest lasting. You'll have to show them off when they're in bloom. Maybe tack it on to the video where you talked about how you sell the raised bed kit. Great product! 😊 I'm noticing that you are doing a great job of stickering your sawn lumber in the yard. VERY tidy! 😊How about an update on the kiln now that the sun is shining?

I have a local owned sand and gravel yard in my town. I have a deal with the owner in which I weigh the product and pay him when I have used 1000 or 2000 pounds of rock. [I was even told where the keys are for the front end loader]. Really handy for off hours needs. I am sure through the years I have paid him more than what I have used but worth it for the convenience.

The philosophy behind the pratice is very solid. Also, the part of the country the log yard is in is mostly self policed. Your neighbor watches your back as you eatch theirs because you each value the contribution the other makes to the whole community.

You are fortunate to live where you do! Worked in Billings MT we built full scribe log homes there. Locked up EVERYTHING! Cable around scaffold even! Dunno how many double padlock job boxes were destroyed all power tools stolen. An 8 ft bucket for the John Deere...stolen! Fire wood stolen. He put in a security system with an alarm in the demo building I stayed in working there. Some un-nerving nights walking the yard packed my 410 single shot with a hand full a shells 3 inch high brass #6 shot. Fortunatly never encountered any body wind would break contact on doors cause alarm to go off. I don't miss that part. It sucked! Had orders to smoke any body I found theiving in the yard. Am I liable for what happens to a trespass thief? Probably in todays world. Full choke 410 might create an owie! Keep up the great videos! We saw flats on house logs with a Hudson most times use a log scibe and a chain saw. You got some good tips on hear! Totally agree with your chain saw sharpening video!

Thieves are more interested in what they can flip. Power tools and copper are huge targets and if you leave any copper around on a jobsite, it WILL be gone the next day. In fact, there was a story the other day about a guy who broke into a power substation to steal copper from it. He touched the wrong part and those high voltage transformers turned him into a fried fritter. A major Darwin award winner.

Your family operates its business in the customary way of mountain people who are truly part of a community. I have fond memories of such businesses from my youth, especially Byrum and Townsend Grocery. Amos "Old Man" Byrum would fill the orders taken by his wife Edith and then carry out delivery inside customers' homes, placing cold foods in the ice box and leaving the rest on the kitchen table. And note that when I say ice box, I mean that literally. People here in rural areas did not have electricity in their homes until I was a young man in the 1970's. Unfortunately, "progress" that brought outsider "city folk" from all over America also brought their bad ways with them. No longer was the community made up of families who'd lived alongside each other for 200+ years - families closely or distantly related. With change it became impossible for honest folk to run a business in such manner. Keenly pay attention to the ways of your family and customers, for in time you will treasure these memories more than any wealth you may accumulate. p..s. - I even have fond memories of using a horse-drawn wheeled plow to till many acres of land, though the blood and sweat I shed in the hot sun doing so left me unappreciative of the gift I was receiving at the time.

One of the things I first noticed was the shop didnt have locks on the doors, so all our power tools ( routers , drills , sanders, ect. ) were out in the open. But the toilet paper was kept in a lcocked cabinet in a locked building. Nothing was ever taken.
