Eric I want to thank you again for this video after a day trying out my 7 iron head with different shafts. Will be 82 in June and have a 7 iron swing speed of 74-75 mph. I am trying to transition from a 120 gram stiff Rifle shaft to a lighter shaft, and was testing a Nippon Zelos 7 stiff shaft that weights a mere 77.5 grams and a Nippon Zelos 8 stiff shaft that weights 87.5 grams, both on the same 34 degree loft forged blade head I now play, plus a KBS Tour Lite regular shaft of 95 grams on a TM P7MC head. Obviously it was important to make a good, consistent swing and contact to compare trajectory and distance. I need to work on that, and this video was fundamental advice for a correct swing. What you see from Scott is a very definite shift of weight on to his left leg. As you say, this is essential to achieving correct contact. However, while it may be natural and easy for skilled players to accomplish, for a senior player like me getting the sequence right requires taking a bit of time to shift my weight before making the downswing. The move, as best I can tell, is not done by pushing hard off the trail foot, but instead seems closer to kind of "falling" on to the left side. The sequence is backswing, then just before reaching the top of the backswing let the body, the hips, "fall" on to the left leg as you begin the downswing. Some teachers call this a "bump" but I find if done well it is more of a relaxed drop or fall to the left. This "falling" on to the left leg creates momentum in the hips and core that promotes the hip turn you describe and the right leg folds or bends almost of its own weight on to the right toe. What complicates performing this sequence is that a lot of coaching calls on the player to make a faster backswing because that generates a faster downswing. But thinking about going back fast in order to immediately come down fast doesn't leave the mental space to remind yourself for a split second to make that "falling" move or shift on to the left leg at the start of, or to start, the downswing. You have to relax and not rush. Dr. Kwon, for example, emphasizes a trigger move of the club toward the target in order to generate momentum for a fast backswing in order to promote a fast downswing. However, he does also tell students to make that a full, "mature" back swing in order to avoid making a jerky fast transition pulling down with the arms. But in order to get that shift of the hips to the left and weight on to the left leg, you need to consciously relax, avoid being anxious to yank the club into the downswing. Another thing that can impede making this shift of the hips to the left is the advice many coaches give about not swaying too far to the left and instead turning the hips, pulling the left hip or pocket back. However, this can make you try to turn the hips hard to the left during the downswing without shifting the hips left toward the target. So you have to overcome that tendency to execute the shift to the left correctly. Another thing is that as you shift your hips to the left and get your weight on to the left leg, while you are also thinking about this video and others that clearly show the pros keeping their heads at or behind the ball, you can inadvertently begin to tilt your shoulders back to the right from the waist. That will cause the club to strike behind the ball (fat). It is necessary to keep the shoulders somewhat level and over the ball as you allow your weight, your hips, to fall forward on to the left leg. And finally, in addition to all this, you must focus on keeping the hands and arms and club shaft in front of your chest or stomach or belt buckle as you execute the back swing, and avoid folding the arms across the body. If you turn your shoulders and hips back away from the target on the backswing, your hands and the club shaft will automatically end up in the correct position above your right shoulder. If on the other hand you do what so many recreational players do and move your arms back behind you, folding them across you chest, and on top of that turn the hips and shoulders back, the club and handle will be trapped way too far behind you and you will have great trouble shifting your hips to the left and are almost sure to hit a fat shot. So today the advice you give here in this video helped me immensely to make correct contact and judge which shaft weight seems to work best for me. I apologize for the length, but wanted to let you know how good this advice was. Thank you.

Thanks for putting all the components together. I knew about early wrist extension but didn't put it together with the arm bend. The hip and shoulder movements were bonuses. Great video. One other thing that jumps out in the video is spine angle which I think is critical.

Thanks Eric, great video and timely for me. I've played a draw most of my life and my inside-out swing makes it hard to square the body at the finish. Plus, I tend to hit up on the ball and get flippy at times. Your video addresses all these issues and can hopefully get me on track to a little more consistency. And I tend to sway some. Oddly, I can shoot some good scores but I make it tough on myself.

Great instruction and explanation on how not to fat shots. My problem is with bending my right wrist. Unable to bend it due to accident that resulted in my wrist being fused in a straight position. Are there any helpful tips for working around this problem. I slice everything, no matter the club I use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 😎
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hey William! ahh sorry to hear of that....there aren't too much good work arounds for that unfortunately. If your right wright isn't able to bend back the first thing I would think is you would need a VERY VERY turned "strong" grip in order to keep the face closed/lower loft. you will likely struggle with some speed/distance either way but that way you can fix slice hope that helps

Your such a great help to all of us. One quick question, do we ever make an effort to straighten our front leg in this pointintime to create power or do you not recommend doing that. So many instructors say we should use the front leg for power. So confused 😢
@CogornoGolf

It definitely SHOULD straighten.... whether you NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT? ..... Well if it happens without any thought than no If it doesn't happen without any thought than yes I did full video on that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZC6iaWagdaVqZY&pp=ygUVRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgbGVn kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXyxiZJtqdCBa9E&pp=ygUVRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgbGVn

Really useful video, thanks. But here is a question. The last tiny split second before and through contact is such a problematic area. As I am almost 82, I tend to have some trouble rotating. This probably causes my arms to dominate even if I don't want them to. They straighten too much just at that critical juncture. The pro I go to said in a lesson a few days ago that what he sees is that just before, at, and after contact my arms are pushing hard down and out with a shortened follow through and not enough turn. He wanted me to have my left wrist bowed and right wrist in extension exactly as shown here just before contact, when the shaft is parallel to the ground, but then for me to allow the hands to release with the momentum of the club head and let that momentum, together with more turn, produce a high follow through as shown here, with the right knee coming up to the left and if possible my right foot being up on the toe. That sounds easy and looks easy when Adam swings, but it is harder to do than one may think. My question is, are you saying, and am I seeing here in Adam's swing, that the wrists do not release until after contact, that not only does the right elbow remain bent through contact, but the right wrist also remains in extension through contact? That would seem to conflict with what the pro was trying to get me to do in allowing a freer, momentum impelled not forced, release through contact. However, I do think in slow motion I see the back of Adam's left wrist is in fact turning down and toward the target just at contact, so he is getting that momentum induced release that carries into the follow through. And of course, for us seniors the early extension and standing up you mention briefly is a real issue. It gets harder to maintain posture. Also, we have to guard against swaying too far forward while not keeping the head back so that we get too far out in front and thin the shot. Sigh.
