Over 30 years ago some of us tried to get a Neighborhood Watch going. The Police officer in charge said, "If someone wants to get into your house, they will. Just make your house harder to get in than your neighbor's. Generally, if it's difficult, they will move on to easier pickings." Without thinking, we have a well-defensible home, just far enough out of a city, but not far off the beaten path. We're as ready as is reasonably possible for most contingencies.

During mass violence/riots, most people are unaware that a major metro police department has so few officers on duty that they cannot even hold three major road intersections and will be unable to respond to individual incidents. This is especially true on afternoon or night shifts when less personnel are on duty.

Great points, Justin. Most important thing I've learned from training with former SEALS. Green Berets and other SF guys- in any crisis situation, the vast majority of the people will panic or be useless. So, you have to ask yourself-do you want to be a liability or an asset? That might mean carrying a firearm, it might mean carrying an IFAK (or both); it might mean just keeping your head and helping people when everyone else is panicking. I constantly ask myself: Do you have what it takes to be an asset?

Lethal vs Non-Lethal: my non-lethal response is me mumbling, "You bad guys better get out of here..." then comes the lethal. All jokes/reality aside, the problem comes between the response time of law enforcement (I'm fmr LEO) and the reality of the situation. We've got to get to a point in this country when the judicial system recognises that the common man is under the 'when seconds count, help is only minutes away' rule...and we don't have that kind of reality and wait time. It is sad to read about a person defending their home from a 'choir boy' who enters at 0200 in the morning, jacked up on smack with a tire tool in his hand (or worse), given the ambient temperature challenge...all for the homeowner to be arrested, charged and then drained of their funds for years to come in the court rooms. If it comes to that, of course a person will be glad (read: GLAD) that their family is OK, but then the injustice begins. Good thoughts, but the system needs an overhaul.

Thank you for this video. You've given me some things to think about, in a more immediate sense. I've known for some time that personal/home protection starts and ends with me, and there are certain things I need to amp up. Three years ago, I had a stroke. I crawled on hands & knees the last 10' to the front door to let the EMTs in. They made sure my dog didn't get out and go walk-about, and I am glad they DID get to my house as quickly as they did.

For the medical, I would say, take a Stop the Bleed class, or bare minimum, a CPR/First Aid class. There are some great EMT classes you can also take if you want to deep dive into EMS. Yes, it takes a few months, but it would be worth it. What you learn here literally would give you a clear idea of how to respond to a gunshot wound, heart attack (MI), you name it. Once you pass the class, congrats, you are steps away from being actually licensed in the EMS world. As always, great information.

That is very good, to be able to have that introspection and have a feel for what you will actually do. Most people think “in this situation I’ll do such n such” but the main problem isn’t what you’ll do in that situation. It’s that initial decision to acknowledge that situation is occurring. I know for me it’s a thing where my mind will start to ask questions that are not necessarily rational and have obvious answers, but my confidence in those answers is too low. This doesn’t really apply to someone breaking into the house, there’re very few questions to be asked in that situation, but in a public scenario it could be a problem.

3 barking dogs, 10 camera security system, indoor and outdoor sirens, two doorricade bars over external doors with 6-inch screws to studs, and adding bullet proof security film to my patio doors (expensive but worth it). Panic buttons in EVERY room. I already lost my home to fire now I’ve got a newly rebuilt home and I’m fortifying it to an extreme. Self-defense tools are next. 😊 I pinch extra prescription pills and build up an emergency supply. I have 2 Jase medical kits for antibiotics and I’ve used them when too sick to get to the doctor for diverticulitis, very helpful. Canned Food stored. Pond in backyard looking into how to get it clean enough to drink.

Amazing. How do we fortify patio doors if we are poor? I have 2 sets. I keep a bar in each at night and when I'm gone for extra security. I thought about making them single doors but cannot afford a contractor and doors are expensive. I'm on SS. Haven't been able to afford a camera system yet. I have two trail camps but can't get them to be effective and the cards fill up fast and I can't erase them to reuse them. Tech stuff is expensive when you only have enough funds for necessities like utilities and insurances etc. I do have pew pews.

Develop and practice situation awareness. As mentioned previously, keep your doors locked all the time. When at a stop light/sign, leave room between you and the vehicle in front of you in case you need to flee. Constantly monitor your mirrors and field of view. Don't trust GPS to take you through the safest route. Know the area you're driving through. Might be safe in the day time but not at night. Keep abreast of the local news so you know what's going on. Play the "what if game." Give your mind something to fall back on during a stressful situation. Know where the exits are when you enter a store or building. During inclement weather, slow down. Don't ignore your intuition. Keep your mouth shut and walk away from trouble. Suck up your pride so you can live for another day. The list goes on and on...

Car & house & windows always locked at night, most of the day, too. Nothing of value in the car. Take some first aid & self-defence training.. have an emergency kit/ medical kit at home & in the car. In case of power outages, have alternative light & heat, and a way to defend yourself. If you have sliding doors, get the kit with a bar, and the special bits for preventing the door being lifted out of the tracks. Don’t assume that you’re special, so you can just live dangerously or carelessly.

🗽🗽👍👍Yup....CERT training is one way to go if your'e even close to not depending on an overwhelmed and woefully unprepared response force....I lived in a major Metro city with a usually under 3 to 5 min average response time, but truth be told that's like the 2 minute warning during a Championship Superbowl game.. Shock and perception moves everything into Slow Motion and minutes seem like hours when waiting for emergency respomders...Unfortunately the first responders sometimes transform into "First Reporters" basically gathering and documenting information for "administrative purposes" after the fact instead of being able to intervene...I'm not being critical, it's NOT a perfect system, but folks do the best they can and it helps to augment your preps and skills and being part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

If you have a CERT organization in your county, that is a good place to start for the next level of 1st aid training and emergency preparedness. Plus you get an inside look on your areas plans. Our county also offers a Stop the Bleed class several times a year for free and other classes for free. I earned my Black Belt when I was 40, after 8 years of training, competing and 4 years of instructing. That was 20 years ago. Working on getting back in fighting form. Got bored with the heavy bag, plus wanted something to practice edged weapons on, so screwed some old tires to the wall next to the bag. It's working so well, that I'm mounting 2 more tires. They aren't bad for punching either. They are loud though, so I'll be putting some carpet between the tires and the wall, then stuffing them with pool noodles. Noise wouldn't be much of a problem if I wasn't pulling off a workout 5 days a week at 4:30 am. lol

Install security mesh/grill for all your doors and windows plus a full home alarm system. These are good investments to deter any would be robber/thief trying to break into your home. If they see your home is well protected, they'll think twice about trying to break it down when there are plenty of other easier pickings around. Thieves and robbers usually tend to go the path of least resistance so as to make their job easier and attract less attention. Our home has never been broken into, but our next door neighbor has had it happened twice. A secure home also means your family is well protected from intruders. There will be times when you won't be there to protect your family due to work, errands or other activities, but knowing your home is protected and safe gives peace of mind. Additionally, a good home security system adds value to your property.

Even a small dog will show bravery and attack - if nothing else, the growling and barking may throw an intruder off. True story: My mother, who has since passed, had four fluffy poodles the biggest of which was a male that weighed about 23 pounds, the others were smaller - about 11-15 pounds at the most. These fluffy, well groomed little lapdog "foo-foo" poodles cornered this guy and VICIOUSLY held him there on the floor in a corner of the kitchen loudly growling, barking and snapping at the intruder like demons. Mom called the police - the dogs kept the intruder cornered on the floor. The police arrived about 15 minutes later and cuffed / jailed the intruder. The amazing part was that none of these fluffy, well coifed little lap dog poodles had ever had any kind of attack or intruder training.

Arm yourself. Your spouse should also be armed. Go to the range every couple of months and practice with your gun. Make sure to stockpile plenty of ammunition, because we never know when we won't be able to have access to it. There are more and more single women, mothers who have bought and have taken defense training classes. The bottom line if someone is kicking in your door, or is already in your house, police are not going to be there in time to save you or a family member. You need to be able to defend yourself and your family

Very good advice. I have found motion detectors to be the most valuable improvements to my home security planning. Cameras are OK, but I would rather have an immediate audible notice from a motion detector than a video of someone coming up my driveway. London england knife/gun crime is the highest its ever been. The news hides these situations knowing very well it needs to calm the public of the current issues that are happening out there. Even though the law states don't use lethal forces or take the law into your own hands however its probably best to have something in place to defend yourself.

It’ll take even longer nowadays because of all the speed bumps they have put all over the island. Not just a few but excessive! Having large dogs, fully fenced and gated property with cameras helps. I’ve been a victim at one point. Now I have dogs! Not only are they are best friend, they protect us!

From what I can tell, Crime has dropped the last two years since 2021. And even after the 2020 spike, crime wasn’t as high as it was when I was a kid in the ‘90’s. It’s still good to be prepared. But we should’ve always been this way even as the statistics were showing crime get lower and lower for decades.

@@nolashiflett635 any evidence for this? Judicial leniency doesn’t reduce the reported crime rate, so if even if you’re right that judges are more lax, this doesn’t mean the crime that occurred didn’t get reported or gets un-reported.

@PracticalPreparedness people here in the UK worship the boot. Daddy Government makes them feel safe. They vote with feelings and without logic. Basically, what Democrat voters want for your country. Then, as we have no constraints on government power (Parliament not the people is sovereign here), our "rights" are what Parliament says they are. Also, Parliament wields absolute power with less than half of the people in support. We have a "first past the post" system, so if you live in an area that supports one party or the other, your vote counts for bupkis nationally. Basically, it's a corrupt oligarchy run for the benefit of the establishment pretending to be a democracy to keep the proles quiet.
