I think one of the hardest steps is trusting the process, but the longer you pull through and get results even if you are inconsistent, can be really motivating. I’m very inconsistent, but have become more consistent as a result of seeing my progress these last three year. I’m so grateful for all the tips and help you have so kindly provided along the way!

Most of the best and most successful artists that I know are self-taught. I didn’t study art when I was younger, I learnt later in life from local evening classes and later an online course in painting and drawing. Being self-taught means that you learn so much from your own mistakes and experience. I wish that I had taken the step to being a full-time artist earlier. However, I don't regret not going to art school 😊

As a self taught artist I'm constantly trying to improve my skills. I'm currently taking an online portrait drawing class. I also started taking an in person painting class at a local cultural arts center near me. Both classes are surprisingly inexpensive. Not to mention getting guidance for another person is always extremely helpful. Thanks for the tips!

Your videos have actually help me a lot to form a curriculum suited to my needs. While i understand how art school can and help people who thrive on structure and order, we need to accept that a lot of people simply cannot afford to make those kind of investments. Also, NMA have great resources! I found them while looking for pose references and was very pleased with their classes

When it comes to finding my own style I believe it’s best to study subjects that I am interested in rather then the work of other artists. I feel like when you look at other peoples artwork too much, it automatically causes you to copy elements in their work. This can really hold you back. A wider range of interests and research leads to a more unique style I believe.

What I love is that most community colleges in the US are free, at least the two year programs for an associates. I actually didn’t think art would be my career until I decided to go to college for art. It really transformed me, the professors became my mentors and I learned so much. There is also allot of free art programs for both Bachelors and Masters you just gotta look. My dream job is to teach at a university level so the only way to do that is to get a masters degree. 😱

The only reason I'm going is to have fun, and because I want to study conservation and you need an art degree for that, also in the UK you only have to pay back your loan once you earn over a certain amount so I'm not worried about the money, but I probably wouldn't go if I didn't think it would be fun and necessary for further study ❤

@Kelsey, never apologise for being ill and getting better. You did not come across as being unwell. As you are the one who was not feeling great at the time of recording, it made you more self-aware. The video was well put together and put a focus on structure when learning as an artist. We all have lives, some personal time is needed that is what gives live meaning, otherwise you will become bored which is why people give up.

They teach me to develop my art skills only. creativity is a gift that you have and no one can teach you that. You have the gift no all the people can do that. Congratulations

Thank you Kelsey for this video, and all the advise you give on how to make money from art. I am an architect, and we did study most of the things you see in art school, the only thing I didn’t see was human figure. But the knowledge is there, the foundations. So now at 36 I am getting started with my art career, and your videos have been very helpful. I will say this, no you don’t need to go to art school, to make art. I think you just need to learn fundamental things, that you can learn from a book, or online courses. But aside from that I think practice is the best teacher in art.

I think the value from artschool for people who struggle with self-discipline is in the financial cost they'd be losing if they don't turn their work in or do a good job but that can be replaced by finding a trusted friend or family member, sending them X amount of money and telling them that if you don't turn in your artwork by X date/time, they'll get to keep it. This is what I do personally and it's worked astoundingly well.
@KelseyRodriguez Жыл бұрын
absolutely true! I think there are ways to replace that structure via some kind of accountability group or a community, even an independent course taught by another artist, that would still save you thousands of dollars. Basically just seconding what Hanna said :)

I'm one of those unmotivated and undisciplined people. What I found was that subscribing for online mentorships worked so much better at a budget. I also got the chance to enroll myself on a studio class an hour and a half away from where I live for figure drawing. Look in your area foe atelier, workshops, or online mentorship where you have one on one with your teacher.

For a self directed art education you can't go past Art Prof. Over 1000 videos on youtube and comprehensive self directed learning curricula in a number of media and techniques on their webpage AND all absolutely free. (I am not affiliated in any way with them, just enjoy their content and learn from it).

For me it was kind of a similar proces 😀 I experimented with a lot of different styles for years until I found my own. To be honest that really planned out structure didn’t work for me. I figured it worked better if I kept my motivation high and just work on a ton of different types of projects.

As a Master's graduate, my experience in graduate school opened my eyes to the power of self-learning. It's worth noting that my graduate program was in a field unrelated to my undergraduate studies. Throughout my studies, I relied entirely on self-study, as professors and classmates paid little attention to me. My sole focus was finding ways to graduate. This experience led me to fully understand that you can entirely teach yourself a subject you have no prior knowledge of. It made me question the necessity of traditional schooling, except for those who enjoy exams.

I have no desire to go to an actual art college. But I REALLY want to study full-time at an art atelier! I feel like it's the perfect compromise between self study and a college education. You don't get a degree, but you get all the technical training you could ever ask for with great teachers who really know their stuff. It's still expensive, but only a fraction of the price of going to college.

the reason i was really excited to go to art school is because i wont have to study for school as much 💀 But also I wanted to become an animator and I loved drawing (still do) so I think that even with the fact that art schools in MY country arent that expensive, I think it was worth it (I think like 1700 euros per year)

I always find your posts very informative and even educational BUT I think this is very bad advice. There tends to be a quite blinkered mindset within the "Self-Taught" community where they assume that a degree course is about being "taught" art, and only for people who need structure and "who need the motivation and guidelines and can’t do it themselves" as someone said below. The problem is that you are completely missing the point of any degree course, which is first and foremost to develop you into a more well rounded person, expand your thinking and challenge your preconceptions. The course I did, and which most people I know who went to art college in the UK experience, is that you have very few rules, very little structure and are only required to attend a few specific classes. The point of that is is to bring out your own self determination. Students who don't get much out of Uni are those who just loafed around for 3 years! Beyond that, everything you experience is about expanding your horizons, coaxing you out of your comfort zones and challenging head on your own lazy thinking patterns. You are also in a group of your peers, helping each other along to grow, but also competing against each other. There is plenty I could criticise about Art School, and often did at the time, but it was an invaluable experience. That stays with you for life. The danger for the self-taught is derivative and lazy art , there is so much of it shared online, sadly by people who could be much better artists if they would just open their mind to the possibility that art school actually has a lot more to offer them than they think. Not everything is goal driven and quantifiable, and of course there will always be exceptions who can become very adept through their own endeavours, but they tend to be the exceptions. PLUS: there is a huge irony in reading comments below where people who are lapping this up suggest that they would love to be "taught art" by you!!!!

What you described as your art school experience is great, but keep in mind that many are not like that. The art school I went to was very stressful and demanding. And extremely expensive. It’s not something that everyone can handle, nor is it something that everyone has access to. She’s not saying that art schools aren’t useful and that no one should go. This is simply another option.
@WifeMomMe-gl5jw9 ай бұрын
Not everyone has the same experience in a structured setting. There are many artists that have such great insight and vision because of how they stand back and view the world and people around them. The US school system has a core curriculum that every teacher and student is expected to adhere to and meet the standard of. All this does not take into consideration that humans learn in different ways at different paces. Two of my three children have gone to university and finished. My third child...the one that could have made top grades with ease...he did not go to university. He struggled all through school. But at home could easily do his older sister homework. Structured learning is not for every person. We are not all cast from the same mold. I could no more go out and win Wimbledon than Donald Trump could be quiet for an hour. I dont have the talent, the skill or the desire to play tennis. Trump is ...never mind. We are just all different and therefore learn and do different. In all my years at school, I spoke in front of the class 2 times. I am almost 55 years old. I still hate that I was forced to speak in front of the class all those years ago.

@yvehooson92627 ай бұрын
@@lewessays Right, would that be privileged like I was when I did 3 jobs and paid my way through art college while struggling with PTSD and severe depression? When I used to spend pretty much every waking hour scrubbing floors, then going straight to my other job in a factory during the night? Most of us get off our arses and work for what we want in life. I hope you have that in mind.

I like the idea, but if you’re someone who didn’t go to art school, you can’t really know the same amount. It’s not just about learning information. I went to art school and it was fantastic! That being said, of course You don’t have to go to art school to be an artist, but don’t kid yourself thinking self taught and art education are equal

Why discredit art schools? If everyone is self-ego taught, there will be no orderliness. No distinction between teacher and student. Very unhealthy practice in art community.
