I won't lie that your "How much I make as an artist" videos have bothered me long before Morgue's video. Now let me just say that I don't think a person needs to make a single penny off their art to be considered an artist. That's part of our identity but that doesn't automatically make it our profession. The reality is that most of your income comes from being a social media influencer and art is just a small fraction so giving advice about how to be financially successful as an "artist"...well it's just not accurate and that's what didn't sit well with me. I even went on a long rant to my partner about this at the time. Why should anyone take financial advice on how to be an artist from someone who isn't technically making a living off their art? Obviously there's more to running an art business than just making art but you get the point. I don't think you need to dramatically change your content, but maybe be more mindful of your wording. Had you been honest about the artist vs art social media creator distinction from the beginning, Morgue likely wouldn't have had any issues with you. I think they had some valid critiques and you made valid points to defend yourself. I don't think anyone is a bad person in this scenario and I hope you can both find ways to thrive after this.

This kind of argument about “real artists” is just historically false. Was Da Vinci an artist while working as an engineer and manager of theatrics at court for the Duke of Milan? What about all the artists who taught art while painting, such as Carolus-Duran, Bouguerou, etc? Also, this idea is just etymologically unfounded. The word “art” is from the Latin “ars”, meaning just “craft/skill.” To be an artist means to work and love a craft! Video-editing, small business, coaching-all a craft to be honed! Your kindness and openness are an inspiration for all creatives! You do great work and have helped many people.

Your art is beautiful and I've seen the care you put in your website, I admire the level of detail that goes behind each painting or product and I do actually find you art finance advice pretty helpful, it's true I've seen some art/regular KZbinrs talk about pyramid schemes in this playing field, but you don't give that vibes/you're quite professional/mature imo! Tbh I wouldn't say you're my favourite art KZbinr (I need to watch more of your videos) , but I respect you so much and you sort of remind me of an irl friend that is very dear to my heart. Thank you.

I enjoyed your video Kelsey, but you are wrong. I grant you that SOME people over time can develop techniques with enough practice, but I also agree with the Author Stephen King when he said "There's a rumor that CREATIVE WRITING can be taught." It is a rumor because just like comedy or any other profession there people out here who are NATURALLY gifted. They have the eye and need little time to cultivate those talents. I hope you continue to be blessed.

I literally have to use a daily, weekly and monthly planner religiously to plan around painting (what I want) twice a week. Most of my job as a full time artist is making my 14K monthly quota (doing commercial art) so I can keep my studio, insurance, apartment, car payment, feed my fur babies and more. I think folks should learn that being an artist is a business and it can be terrifying and rewarding but you can never stop creating. Here's to Kelsey! Thank you for all you do! Don't let this bring you down. 💙💙💙

Their video was so annoying... It really felt like a personal attack on some of the people mentioned, through and through. The way they were comparing how much art they made to how much art you made just said everything to me. Or how they said you were lying about expectations when it comes to numbers regarding income was crazy. In no way did that ever come across to me when watching some of your videos when they popped up on my feed. I just see them as good insight into YOUR artistic career. Sorry but only if you have no grasp on the idea of a concept, will anyone think that you are telling them that is exactly what anyone can make. We all know how hard it is being an artist online. Its hard. Anyone who does this seriously, in whatever way possible, would agree that transparency can only do us good. Honestly, keep doing you Kelsey.

My experience with MFAs is more literary than artistic, but the two things that seem to recommend themselves more than anything are (1) a well-vetted community of teachers and peers and (2) the chance to encounter and confront your "unknown unknowns." There are strong alternatives to learning actual art skills, if you know what search terms to use. What we really need are more robust communities of highly skilled artists supporting each other and provide those helpful little nudges into the unknown - in the same way that there are writers' circles or quilting bees.

I totally hear the criticism of morgue as levied at youtube in general. In all honesty, I echo some of morgue's frustration with the platform and the rampant scam artistry that occurs on here. I just think they chose the wrong target. I don't mean to uphold you as a paragon of virtue or the absolute best content creator on the platform - just that you're making actual content that benefits people. The products you sell benefit the people that buy them, and they're not meant just to sell more products. I know you said that in your video, but I think it merits bringing up again.

I think where morg missed the mark is that you’ve published income reports. You can see where your income comes from. As an artist, I’ve watched your videos. I can see when you’re giving advice from experience and results and you’re giving “ideas” on how to succeed. I think it’s a good lesson for anyone. Never take anyone’s word for it. Even income reports can be falsified (not saying you do, just saying they can be). If anyone wants to learn something from someone, they need to be confident that person has had success from that thing. I never come to your channel to learn how to run a business only selling originals and prints. But if I wanted to learn about brand deals, new ways of selling art that I hadn’t considered, and things like how you plan, or how to become a content creator so I CAN make more art, then this is where I’d come. (And other things). What Morg doesn’t understand is that the internet is filled with people just like you doing a variety of things. None of it is a guarantee. It’s better to develop a BS detector than it is to make videos criticizing people. If you don’t like the content, don’t watch. Like I only like the content where I know you’ve had success. I don’t watch the “ideas for” stuff. But that’s personal preference. (Again not saying you do any BS, just that we can pick and choose what we take away from any creator).

Smaller gouache paintings are like little dopamine hits for me in between the larger and more daunting projects 🌼 p.s. Love your content, so motivating and relatable!!

Hello. I’ve been an underground enigma of an artist for 35 years. 35! I got 2 full time art college degrees. That attack on you hurt me so much. You can’t even call yourself a real artist if you attack another artist for being successful. We become artists so we can get our vision out there, and do whatever we want to do-and hopefully make money. There’s no handbook for being an artist! You keep going, because none of those critics are going to actually support you or you art!

In terms of undercharging, I had a financial advisor say she tells all her artist clients to raise their rates 10% immediately (plus, remember to increase rates annually). I did that, and I'm so serious when I say no one even said anything about it.

All these comments are nothing but hateful towards this person. Kelsey didn't have to name the creator, nor did she have to repeat that name multiple times in said video. These comments make everyone sound like blind followers and I don't want to believe that's what they are. I agree fully with Morg regarding bating people with the captions about money. Kelsey explains herself well, but I don't agree with outwardly naming the person. She might as well have said "don't hate on this person.. wink wink" Everyone finds success in the art work differently. Creators who grow the way Kelsey did often lose touch with artists who haven't found money or success as easily and forget what that's like, as I believe that's what has happened to her channel. I am 100% in support of Morg's concerns and agree with them, but that doesn't mean Kelsey is some evil mastermind. It doesn't mean either creator are bad.

I’m really sorry you feel this way, I tried multiple times in the video to keep the conversation constructive. I guess not mentioning them by name never really crossed my mind? Their video mentions me by name multiple times and at length, was coming up as a top search result when you looked for my channel, and all the other video creators have also mentioned them by name. I don’t think not mentioning them by name would have helped much, but I do see your point!

What?? Morg made a VIDEO about her that was a deep dive in criticizing her one that was going viral. If you play with fire you're going to get burnt. Don't make a "callout" video that fixates on talking about someone if you aren't expecting a response from said person.
@Icednitro5 күн бұрын
@@MissyMona And regrettably, Morgue made a really good point. Kelsey, as now a massive influence on young artists has a responsibility to be honest, relatable, and of course, to not scam or misrepresent her services to those who purchase them in good faith. I'm not saying she IS scamming people, and she seems like a genuine person. But she is a much larger creator than Morgue whom raised a valid and serious concern. They weren't shitting on Kelsey, no name calling, no hate. They just noticed a pattern in KZbinrs of this category, and gave the community something to think about and reevaluate. I think Kelsey provides value in some sense, but I think it's easy to forget her smaller, less successful audience. Also, other artists that covered this topic didn't name Morgue outwardly either, because they don't see a reason to. So your point is moot. I think it was an oversight on Kelsey's part, and I genuinely don't think she thought about it as a malicious move, because ya know, it wasn't. I don't enjoy all the comments who are dragging Morgues name now, when Kelsey specifically said not to. It feels ignorant, blind, and not even acknowledging some of the points in their video lacks critical thinking skills in the least. Again, I think both sides make valid points. But it will always be up to the viewer. That's the point. People need to stop dragging that person.
