Welcome back to the vlog. This is the best modification I've done to the Thruxton. Should be interesting how it holds up long term. As of now it's a completely different feeling in a positive way.
This is the "first ride" after the modification.
Let me know what you guys think and what kind of mods or videos you'd like to see on this or any of my other bikes.
Don't forget to like the video and subscribe to the channel if you like the content.

This mod has mproved my 1200 Thruxton. I'm in Australia but not anywhere near a town let alone a city. First is a bit fast for off road. As yes I have to ride on dirt/clay/ gravel. These Bonneville bikes are excellent off the bitumen. I have modded the suspension with Tech Engineering progressive springs and preloaders and bi turbo rear shocks. The hard stock suspension, which gave great handling, only worked on city bitumen not Australian country roads, where I needed to soak up the irregularities and still have precise , secure handling.

I find the Thruxton gearing perfect for Australian roads, most common speed limit is 60 to 80 (3rd and 4th gear) and we would max out at 110-120kph here legally and the bike cruises comfortably at 5th or 6th. Quick shift from 1 to 2 simply adds to the engagement.

Hey I just found your channel, and noticed you also have a Ducati Sport Classic. I had a 96 monster and a ST2. Also ridden many other Ducati's over the years and noticed every single one is geared pretty tall. Now my 1200 Thruxton is geared to low for where I live since I'm using it pretty much every ride and always thought it made enough torque to add a larger sprocket as you have done. Does this mode make the bike feel more like a two valve Ducati? Also have you taken it on any trips and noticed a change in your mpg's?
@dorian_vlogs
@dorian_vlogs Жыл бұрын
Better gearing, better power band, lower mpg's, a completely different bike. All around better. Not sure I can compare it to the Duc but definitely better. Ducati has it's own characteristics. Both great bikes. Rode about 150 miles today on the Thruxton and it's still the best mod I've ever done to it.

Great bike, great video. I don't know for sure as to why Triumph does not do what you did but if I have to guess, I'd say its heritage related. It is a cafe racer. It is not meant for highways. In England, you just use it to go to the pub. May be a little country roads but that is pretty much it. During that, you want to shift gears, feel the vibrations, max it out and just have fun. Especially for this bike, heritage is very important to Triumph. That is why they bothered to put a non functional carburetor looking piece on the engine just to make it look nostalgic.

I'd bet you're right. In the U.S., the gearing isn't right. With this setup, It's still usable on low speeds and stop and go's.

The gearing is to high on West Aussie country roads. Stock gearing is ok in a city. Total pain on open road as you are cruising at 80 mph and more. Plus it has to be revved.

I just got a 2016 r model, I am used to very fast bikes as a tuono v4 1100 , I only used the Thrux a couple of times and liked it A LOT by now and I also had the idea that the gearing was too short, first gear is totally useless even starting from dead stop, you can start in 2nd /3rd gear with that low torque with no effort. . I will start with pinion + 1 teeth , that is almost equivalent to a -3 on the rear . And no chain shortening is required . The speed sensor where is located ? Is it independent from gearing ? On some older bikes that could be a problem. Already have a decat in the garage ready to be mounted. Next mod will be tubeless mod to lose some weight . First mod was lithium battery, 3.3kg saved in 5 minutes :-)

I've been considering this as well on my '22RS. I've done the decat, termignoni cans, no air injection, retune, tail shave, motone signals, airfilter, 8500 redline, etc. The bike has a stupidly wide torque curve; there's no reason to put the gears spaced so close together. I agree with you; I've had plenty of bikes that are faster, but the style/performance of the Thrux is so unique and enjoyable. My fave mod was the Termi's. Next I'm trying to find a disable switch for the DRL headlight.
@wetzel1628
@wetzel1628 Жыл бұрын
How fast can you get that thing to go with those mods? Flat cap cafe racer (look him up on KZbin) did all that on his thruxton r and it kept up with a zx14 In a quarter mile. Unfortunately you can’t get a racey cam for the RS due to higher compression ratio. They changed the cam profile on the RS to make peak torque even LOWER in the rev range. I imagine with the right cam and a DNK tune the thruxton RS would be more like a Ducati monster. I’d LOVE to do that to mine
@hektoerdonovan2121
@hektoerdonovan2121 Жыл бұрын
@@wetzel1628 I doubt its that fast but it's plenty for me. I do have a tune from DNK. She said the engine needs to Rev higher to make more hp but the computer is out of load cells, I think. Maybe an aftermarket ecu if the rotating assembly can handle more revs would work. It makes sense to put more midrange focused cam in it because it clearly has hardware that wants higher revs for peak torque as it is. I think that's why superchargers get such nice returns on them. The thruxton sales are slowing down so it has to share electronics with the more popular speed twin. I go back and listen to most thruxtons on yt with stock cans or other cans and it just seems like mine sounds different than that anymore. It's hard to describe but it is different. Termignoni does have the most teasingly short video on their thrux exhaust online.. Maybe it's just irl ears on mine versus a yt video. I have a gopro that I intend to set up to get some vids and see how it sounds to compare apples to apples. Either way, I love it!
