The reflectors do a great deal to low-light/night visibility, but they can be done with modern materials that look awesome, and give a new life to the vehicle while a light is shining on them, so reflectors should still be mandatory, but you should be able to use more modern types that look better, like sticker type, wrap type, plastic embedded type, because, just in case your electrical system fails, or you are approached from an angle that doesn't have a light shining from your motorcycle, you can have your life saved by the reflectors.

@aaronbritt2025 Жыл бұрын
The real reason most integrated turn signals are illegal isn't due to visibility. LED's are very bright and visible. It's because most states have laws about the distance between the signals. The right and left signals need to be far enough apart that it's clear which side they're on. From a distance, it can be hard to judge if it's the left or right signal when they're right next to each other like they are in an integrated tail light setup.
@stephenkennedy449311 ай бұрын

The reflectors are actually for when the bike is parked in the dark in a public space, or perhaps to simply be seen more easily from a side profile in general. Really kind of a specific law. 1. Reflectors are for side exposure. Headlights, turn signals and and other front/back facing does not provide ample visual, see Turn signal discussion for obvious reasoning some states use Hand signals. 2. Helmets cannot be modified, per manufactures. Purchasing helmets with modifications are legal, as they have passed ODOT testing requirements. Drilling holes into your helmet will reduce it's durability. Attachments not mechanically connected are legal, as they are able to break away without causing potential harm. 3. Under-glow, while in operation, is illegal on ALL vehicles, in all 50 states, per ODOT Regulations. They create a distraction and can also be confused with Emergency Vehicles. 4. Regardless if you purchase new, used, private or dealership... it doesn't even matter if you are borrowing. It is the responsibility of the Operator to check and insure their vehicle is operating up to Health and Safety Standards... Ignorance of the law is not a viable excuse. Yes, It sucks, but if you are the victim of a accident where someone else responded "Sorry, I didn't know it was illegal", would you REALLY allow them to walk away? 5. Cats were added to bikes as a compromise, they were pushing for banning bikes and this was the alternative. If unsure how it applies when someone else did/authorized the change... see #5 above. Manufactures don't get the Citations, the riders do. Dealerships will sell whatever they can, so long as it's legal to sell. They will even sell an off-road bike to someone they know wanted a ride to work... they make sure to cover their butts. 6. No Manufacture want to spend extra time and money to engineer, design, test and install safety equipment. They did so because there was some issue that demanded it. In other words, it is there for a reason and none of them are "to annoy you". Just like the reflective vests for road workers... it's more about making sure you get home safely, not how you look getting there. Form and Function should always be priority, and it's better to have some knucklehead laugh at you, then spend the rest of your days a human vegetable, drooling on your shirt, peeing into a catheter and being spoon fed baby food by a CNA that looks like a Hells Angel B*tch, cuz that would be the only person able to turn you every couple of hours.

Loud exhausts, and smaller than legal number (license) plates are something that the UK police like to issue tickets for. It is possible to remove the headlight from a bike, and for it to still be road legal. You can get something called a daytime MOT (Ministry of Transport Test). Which will allow you to ride your bike, normally a dirt bike, on the road during the hours of daylight only.
@kilerscn8 ай бұрын
Also, the reason for the plastic plate holder out the back is in some places (I think it is a Eurozone thing so Britain likely still has it too) is that the tyre cannot be the furthest back port of the vehicle, it has to have some body work / frame as the very end of the bike. Also in the UK you can ride without mirrors but if you do have just one it has to be on the left hand side.
@mickstafford4568 ай бұрын
You are correct about the plate holder. Euro, and UK, law state that the plate must be behind the rear tyre. However, in the UK at least, there is no requirement to have the plate mounted there for the MOT (roadworthiness test), and many people fit a tail tidy. In the UK, you can get a daytime only MOT. Which allows you to run a bike without, lights, mirrors or indicators. The bike is then road legal, for daytime hours only. It pretty much means that you can register a dirt bike, for road use, if you so desire. @@kilerscn

In my state, most of these are technically illegal, but as long as you're not being a squid, they just don't care. The only one they care about at all times is making your license plate unreadable. City cops might not might not attempt a stop, but state troopers and motorcycle cops definitely will.

Pennsylvania specifically allows the addition of LED lighting on motorcycles to improve rider visibility. I have amber LED's on my Grom, and red on my CB500F (which also function as added turn signals), to match the color schemes. I've also replaced the reflectors that the previous Grom owner removed with reflective orange wheel tape. It works and helps keep me visible. Personally, I'm safety conscious when I'm on a motorbike and take every advantage I can to enhance my chances of survival. Added lighting, added visibility, even added sound (as anecdotal as the results may be), all work together to increase my chances of arriving at my destination alive.

He actually said it was a good idea, made me more visible at night since it wasn’t a normal white or yellow headlight. Surprisingly too, it gave off a decent amount of light too.

What's nice about my bike is that there were no emissions regulations until 1979 on motorcycles. (California not included) Mine is a 1978 harley davidson flh Bobber. (Grandfathered) Over the last 20+, I went to court twice, and both times, the ticket was thrown out. (Illegal exhaust, straight pipes)
@robertsmith295611 ай бұрын
Isn't it ILLEGAL to not use the stock manufactured exhaust? You couldn't change it, or you would break the law.
@rjoetting759411 ай бұрын
@robertsmith2956 Antique and vintage vehicles have a different set of rules. The stock exhaust rules are fairly recent, and the rules for stock exhaust didn't exist at the time that my bike was mfg. That is why mine is grandfathered. It's like antique cars that don't have seat belts. You don't have to install them if they were originally not there, but if they install them, then you are required to wear them. But you can always just remove them as long as they were never originally installed. I can't remember the year seat belts were required by law. I think it was the late 60s (68/69). I'm not sure.

Slip on is illegal only if excessively loud in Virginia. No specific law about removing cat in Virginia for a motorcycle, unlike for cars is at serious fine, if not jail. Virginia will let you get away with just about any equipment failure now after passing a law that people cannot be pulled solely on equipment failures/violations in an effort to prevent racial profiling. But if you run stop lights, speed, do wheelies, burnouts etc they are then free to ticket you for everything.

In Queensland, Australia indicators on motorcycles became mandatory in 1975. I had a 1976 Ducati 860GTe which I took the indicators off. A cop tried to ticket me for it but I told him it was a 1974 model and didn't need indicators. Ducatis were pretty rare then, and he didn't know any better so just let me go.

Just put a part from a 74 on it so you don't have to lie. Another good thing is those era bikes WIN when a car turns in front of you. I ripped the back of the car off, and I just broke my headlight, and clutch lever. cost me $20 at the junk yard for both. Was really shocked when my gas cap cover broke in late 80's. Went to the dealer, and they said it had a recall, and got the part for free.

Honestly, i think, a yellow-ish underglow would make driving arround at nighttime a lot safer. As long, the light isn't to bright or changes colors all the time. Imagine, cars could have that. White at the front, yellow at the sides, red at the rear. That would be the regular color sheme like trucks have. and that would make it safer to drive at night time.

In the UK my RM250 dirtbike only needs a horn, a brake light and a visible registration plate. Noise limits do technically apply but there's no emissions testing and even with a full fmf pipe and silencer it's still legal. The exhaust does have not for road use written on it, but so does the bike (which is now legally registered) so that doesn't apply. Also you do have to use DOT tyres(or tires) but they're pretty good. For some reason you can actually register and ride a quad bike without the brake light but that seems a bit dangerous for my liking(both because nobody knows you're slowing down and because quads are deathtraps🤣🤣)

Removing the catalytic converter is not just illegal, it's antisocial. Cats remove something like 99% of pollutants, so riding without one means you're blowing poison into the air and damaging other people's health for a couple of HP more. That's being an arsehole. Don't be an arsehole. If you need more power, get a more powerful bike. Also extremely antisocial is putting an obnoxiously loud exhaust on a bike you ride on the street. Removing signalling equipment is not just illegal, it's stupid. What makes you safe in traffic is being predictable: announcing your intentions and letting everyone know what you're about to do. Without blinkers, you don't have any chance to announce to people you're changing lanes or turning, and are quite likely to be hit. But since it's probably just you who'll get killed or maimed, suit yourself and enjoy your freedom to be stupid. Also enjoy being dead. But don't blow poison into the air I breathe!
