Do this to blacken your wood - perfect chisel restoration

Hi and welcome to my channel. This is my very first restoration. Hope you like it. The chisel, I got from my grandpa, he is and old mechanic, that also is into woodworking. He taught me how to use tool and how to take care of them. When I got a bit older he gave me a bunch of tools. Many of the are quality tool, but the years has taken a toll on them. I am now on a mission to restore them. This is the result of it.
The chisel was in very bad shape. But the steel is of good quality and was definitely worth restoring. The brand is E.A.Berg Eskilstuna from Sweden. It’s hard to tell how old it is. But probably before the 1950’s. This makes the chisel over 70 years old. The brand was later brought by Bahco.
The handle was a bit beaten up, so I decided to make a new one. I really like ebonising and the black look. This is what I went for. Ebonising solution is basically just steel wool in vinegar. You can use all kinds of vinegar, but the steel wool should be as fine as possible. My solution here had been sitting for 16h. The longer you let it sit the blacker the result is.
It was my first time turning in brass. I quickly realised that I need new tools for the lathe. But they are now ordered and on the way.

Great job. I actually collect these chisels from E.A. Berg. They made some of the finest chisels many years ago. I have restored many of them and found NOS handles for most. I have just finished restoring a rare 63 mm. and am only missing a few to call my collection complete. You have a great chisel with decent length left and I think you did it justice with the handle. Should serve you well many years to come.

@@grandpastools Keeping them sharp is depending on their use and storage. Keep it stored in a way the edge won't hit anything harder than wood. Honing or stropping between uses makes you not having to sharpen as much. Only using it within its limitations is also important. Don't use it as a crowbar or get it too hot and you'll have it perform well for many years to come. If it does go dull you should be able to easily resharpen it since you've already reestablished the bevel correctly.

I would have flattened up to the logo, and cleaned only beyond that point. Looks like maybe and inch, inch and a half, that would have been plenty of flat for the edge and to register against for paring cuts.

The only question I want answered is how you became the mater of resto? Awesome job and that job you did would make anyone proud especially a grandpa!

I always found it super interesting to make things like new again. But restoring is simply just a matter of many small skills put together. One step at the time, everyone can learn it if you have patience.

What liquid/mixture did you use to darken the wood? Is that steel wool in vinegar? Thank you! Awesome job! Beautiful result!

Yes, it is just plain steel wool and vinegar. The longer you let the solution sit, the darker the wood becomes. It works best on Oak

I personally would have spared the toolmaker's logo, knowing an inch of that chisel would outlast me.
