In this video, I will teach you the 10 kinds of guitar snobs, what they LOVE to say and how to overcome their personalities - once and for all! Learn how to keep your ego in check when it comes to playing guitar or learning music theory!
Guitar snobs can be a difficult obstacle on your guitar journey. However, it's important to remember that there is a deeper, psychological reason behind the snobbery and trolling.
After years of experience in dealing with all the different kinds of guitar snobbery, elitism, and egotism, I've discovered the root of all of it: *guitar playing*.
It may sound like circular logic, but I want you to hear me out on this. Once you understand why these folks act the way that they do, you can overcome their attempts to make you feel insecure and gain greater mental strength and clarity on your guitar journey.
Besides chatting about guitar snobs, you'll get the chance to try out a new lick and see it used in a musical context! Let me know in the comments if you dig this new segment!
Last but not least, you'll get a dose of acoustic guitar news you can use! Featured this week...
-‪@TrevorGordonHall‬ and "This Beautiful Chaos"
-‪@billystrings‬ and "Renewal"
-‪@MandolinOrangeMusic‬ and Andrew Marlin's custom guitar

I really like the guitar lick challenge segment because it puts the lick into a musical context which helps in visualizing a way to use it.#smallwin I would say!

Tony, you hit the nail on the head, but not just in the guitar universe but life in general. I have known too many people, in all walks of like, who no matter what is said (by you or someone else) they have done it or seen it better. You could see a movie on opening day and they have a frien of a friend of a friend of the director and the saw it a week ago. This is way more than guitar snobbery, it is snobbery.

It sounds like the root of the snobbery is insecurity. I can relate to that. I can't relate to mistreating people in order to distract from my insecurities.

Well, you forgot the Brand Name Guitar Snob, the person who believes that the guitar maker they have chosen makes the only guitars worth owning and playing. It's not enough to love guitar makers -- period -- and to know that different makers created various kinds of excellent guitars. Instead of owning, let's say, four dreadnoughts by one maker, with various levels of price, age and bling, it's possible to own different great guitars, from different makers, that sound great on different kinds of music. Say, a Santa Cruz D-12, a Guild M-20, a Martin M-36 and a Taylor American Dream 27.

I lost the use of my fret and have memory issues. I'm struggling to get back to where I used to be, but have found the fastest way to shut down most of the guitat snobs I encounter when they are critical, is to hold the guitar out and simply say "show me" All of a sudden, I seem to be doing just fine.

The "Tuesday T.A.C. Guitar Lick Challenge" is an AWESOME addition. Thank you! There is so much information that comes from the "context", the chords playing in the background, when using scales/modes. Again, thank you for included this segment to the Acoustic Tuesday's.

Love it Tony.....you are aware you are covering about 99.999999999999% of most guitarists beyond the beginner level, even though there are beginners that are snobs too lol! In my experience generally the better the player and more variety they play the kinder and more helpful they are....not always, though. I do agree that most snobbery in general comes from a place of insecurity...the biggest problem I see seems to be twofold....you have the player who only plays one type of music, so nothing else is valid, and then you have the "well-meaning" "friends and salespeople" who push just what they like and think they're actually helping.....not an easy sea to navigate even at the best of times. I don't know if I've ever come across any guitar player ( other than some teachers I respect ) who actually wasn't a " bit of a snob " in some area or another. True story.....I was giving lessons to the son of a former high up executive at a big record company after he retired and one day he told me about a time the Backstreet Boys were in the office and Paul McCartney was sitting on a sofa strumming something. One of the backstreet boys turned around and said " Hey old man, you're not too bad. Ever done anything? " McCartney replied " I may have done a thing or two ".

Hey Tony, I’ve been listening for a while now and I really love your channel. I heard you tell a story in an older episode about driving from Schaumburg to Guitar Center in Chicago to buy your first guitar and thought to myself wow, I grew up in Schaumburg too. In this episode you showed your hockey pictures and now I realize we went to the same high school. I played a little ice hockey myself, not on a team but some “rat ice” sessions, and I played roller hockey way back when in one of the first organized leagues in the Schaumburg area. Small world. I really enjoy your content and I have been planning to join TAC but haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but I will be doing so very soon. Keep up the amazing work, you’ve made a fan for life. Thanks!

Ever read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance? The author drops massive philosophical points and solid ones, but you get disarmed by the fact he's talking mainly about motorcycles. That happened with guitar more than once here. Great guitar tips, great life lessons, and thank you for both. Also, where can I get that hat?! Well not THAT one, but one like it. My buddy Joe is a drummer, and he responds to things in the best way you can- you share something cool and he accepts if joyfully and says something like "right on." Maybe that's what we all need to do- someone's doing their thing and we say hey man, right on. Glad you're here. God bless ST

Great show Tony! I like the new segment. I always wanted to know how to apply the lessons and this was fantastic. Thanks for sharing the Flurry jersey story. I don't see a cup this year for the Hawks. I think every year the Flyers are going to have their year and we know how that dream is going. Lol. I'm excited hockey starts this week, My new way of fiddling around with licks is to fingerpick during commercials and in between periods. My Guitar journey is only 18 months old and just holding the guitar and playing clean notes, I'm really getting to know my Guitar, the fret board and adding new cords. I am having a blast. Thanks to you and TAC family. Have a Grateful Day!

To be sure one of the greatest joys in playing guitar has been the help I have received and given others. Everyone knows something that someone else doesn't. Before You Tube 'how to play.... ' videos existed, and even still, people shared knowledge. Not judgment.

Love your presentations and your attitude. Strange coincidence about my guitar journey is that I have just laid down a simple little loop based loosely on Born Under A Bad Sign on my recently HyVibed guitar. So of course I am running up and down the neck with some minor scale pentatonic (I guess) licks and generally having one heck of a good time. About a week ago, I suddenly and quite accidentally started laying in a major scale (I think) into that same practice loop. I really loved the way that changed things up with how it felt to me. The same basis but almost a night and day difference in how my brain perceives it... how it feels... but it still “works”... somehow. I know zero theory so everything is feels to me, and started going back and forth this way and then I saw this video today. Cool. 😎

My friend (with out asking me) bought an "X brace Martin. I asked to give it a look over. No, don't buy one (feels like they used cardboard for the top",buy a Yamaha FG800 series instead. I told him "nothing below a D16 series in Martin, here try mine". Am I a "guitar snob"? How about the legendary "music store snobbery"? My bottom end guitar that I will let most anyone give it a play is my Recording King RD 328. I will let a stranger play that one (I practice outside mostly, draws street people.) You don't get to try out my higher end stuff. Tony. The "playing guitar is vulnerable' is so true.

I've encountered all of the snobs listed. The worst imo as a beginner, is the "natural". You ask a question or for a demonstration and they are impatient and condescending because you're not able to grasp or replicate what they just did. A typical response is, "It's really easy, you just do it." Whether it's guitar or any other instrument people need to remember that what brings us all together is the love for music.

There are a lot of comments about the new Guitar LIck Challenge, and yes, it's awesome and I love it. But I had to cop to being a guitar snob. In fact, I think I filled more than one role in that list. I am happy to say that I am now a recovering Guitar Snob. My recovery started when I joined TAC well over 2 years ago. Now, I really get the mantra: "Be Nice and Play Guitar". MG 😀

As a younger player, it annoyed me immensely when walking into a music shop to try out a guitar. the vendor would tune the instrument and then proceed to play a blinding "show off piece" before handing the instrument to you with the attitude of follow that if you can. I wonder how many budding guitar players have been put off by this. I went to a music shop on one occasion with my wife and asked to try out a particular guitar. The assistant then tuned it, followed with the show off piece and handed the instrument to me. I fluffed a few chords purposely and the guy rolled his eyes an lost interest. My wife commented to me on how rude he was and I said "watch this!" I then played a faultless version of Classical Gas......What a change in attitude. That experience to me was the worst kind of guitar snobbery!!!!! Steve Collage, Littlehampton, West Sussex. England.

I’ve got more snobbery from people with cheap guitars than I ever did from people with high end ones. When they see I have a Martin D28 or a Gibson I get called the rich guy. Or “ wish I had the money you got”. Get labeled as a rich snob that’s to good for anybody. And it couldn’t be further from the truth! Guitar playing was my passion and I was simply willing to save up and spend more money than they are. To me it was worth it. Not because I’m better than anybody or rich. I’m NOT rich. I just wanted the guitars my musical hero’s played. Meanwhile they drive a 50k new truck or car yet label me a snob for having a 3500 dollar guitar 🤷🏼‍♂️. So they assume because I don’t play a 300 dollar guitar I’m some kind of elitist or something. I’m just a country boy from Kentucky. I just decided I wanted my dream guitars at 25 rather than 70. Now I’m 38 and have gotten to enjoy them for many years with many more to come. Everybody always regrets waiting until their last years to do things they always wanted to do. I just did it early

Guitar Gear Snobs. These are the people who show up at session with their 1961 original Strat, matching Tweed case and matching 50`s or 60`s fender Amp. White gloves are donned before removing the Amp cover or touching the Guitar. The gloves are removed when the Guitar is hanging round their neck. They have sticky tape on the palms of their hands and between their fingers to assist in Palm muting the strings. They can play 3 million Chords but are unable to finish a song. :-)

Speaking of snobbery; elderly gentlemen who just blew a load of their pension fund on the most expensive guitar they could find (which was recommended on an internet forum inhabited by similarly elderly gentlemen), can't play yet become experts in everything overnight. There's a forum dedicated to a guitar brand established in 1833. Start there for examples...

Some of these Guitar Snobs are so in denial there nothing one can say or do Like the old say goes 'Some time you just get to get up and dust off your sandal and move on. Maybe some day he/she will think about it .

First thought when i read the title: am i a guitar snob? Then I heard the 10 types and, no, i'm none of them, not even remotely. But i have to admit I can't stand crappy guitars, how they sound, how they look. That's my thing, I just can't stand them. Of course i'm not the kind of guy to say it in front of someone who owns a crappy guitar, but does it make me a guitar snob, maybe a decent kind of them?

An additional guitar snob: the guitar teacher who INSISTS all his students learn music notation as well as tabs. Hey wait a minute, that's me!😂

I don't encourage learning them, if a younger student asks about them in the book I just say, "Don't worry about those, they're just a guide for the teacher". 😄

My least favourite guitar snob: the " every guitar made by ---------- is automatically better than anything made by any other manufacturer" snob. But I have no time for such people and their attitudes. I just plod on, sometimes badly and sometimes less so. As long as I am enjoying playing, that's all that matters to me. As regards the lady and her tuner, we had a fellow join our local ukulele group. He had tuned his ukulele just as the tuner had indicated. But it sounded horrible. Because his tuner was set to 430 MHz whilst we all tune to 440 MHz....... As a newbie, why should he know any different?

I AM NOT one of the snobs, promise…I can, however make an acoustic sound electric, an electric sound acoustic whenever I want, I interpret and play all genres equally well, use nothing thinner than a 3mm pick when I’m not finger-style slap picking…but, that’s just me 😇🤢🤮😂 Seriously, though..the irony is how humble about their guitar playing the best to ever do it are. Their lack of snobbery actually made them the players they became. Take Care, Everybody, and Believe in Yourself.
