Over 40 and Still Don't Know C.A.G.E.D? (DO THIS!)

A recent video that I did sparked someone to comment that if you're over the age of 40 and you still have not yet learned about the "C.A.G.E.D. Guitar Method," you really need to study it and learn how it works so that your knowledge of the neck can further expand.
For those of you who are not sure what this guitar method actually is, the "CAGED Method," is a path to learning an octave pattern system based off of the root designed octaves of; "C, A, G, E and D," chords found in the open position of the guitar neck.
Some would have you believe that seeing any kind of progress when it comes to learning the guitar after a certain age will be dependent upon resorting to methods like C.A.G.E.D. as a shortcut to more comprehensive development of the fingerboard.
While that is simply not true, this system can still be another learning option that is certainly helpful when it comes to understanding more about how the guitar neck operates for; note names, scales, chords and intervals.

LOL!!!! I didn't start guitar until I was in my early 50s and had played keyboard for 6 or 7 years. I have now sang and played guitar in about 220 open mics and also played at restaurants and wineries opening for friends. Who made up the 40 year old rule, a 10 year old? Just get a guitar, a good teacher and start working no matter what your age is, 8 to 80!

Bought a guitar in late April, purchased a well-known guitar method book, have been learning the notes of the fret, know many chords, am working on barred chords. Practice everyday, faithfully. Practice, practice, practice. This video is a great help. I’m about to turn 61!

I'm over 50, so this video was a bit tough to see properly, until I adjusted my UHF antennas. That said, this is a great lesson on how to best grok the neck and its layout. I know the notes, but this highlights the relationships and nicely maps the intervals. This is exactly what I was looking for.

@@jlevan1996 If you want to take a course from the ground up and don't mind the little bit of dedication involved, then do Andrew's course. I can tell you that it is not random. I was a member at Guitar Tricks and started their Beginner course. First lesson was good, second was making sense, third lesson was totally unrelated as was all further lessons. So, I quit and joined at Creative Guitar. Andrew's system is a real course that he's used with real human beings at his studio, so it's logical and makes sense.

@@jippie11261 Thanks for your recommendation of Andrews course, i made the mistake of showing interest in Guitar Tricks, they keep emailing me snipets of their course, but i got the impression that all they wanted was your money. I have tried a few beginners courses, only to find that even learning a few basic cords is not easy, some don't show you how or where to place your fingers, i need to start again, and learn how to play from scratch.

Hi Andrew, the caged looks like a good spot to improve as a mediocre player that has self taught and missed important building blocks of guitar. You have really great clean, concise and exacting fretboard fingering and your effects sounds I want to learn too... I'm a Saxophonist by trade but attempted guitar most of of my life. I'm 58 now. I have jumped around through lessons, missing important building blocks in the journey and have not memorized the fretboard either. I can figure out the notes but not nano second speed needed as my Sax fingerings are automatic. Also, I'm noticing knowing the notes of chords is the only way to understand building triads etc. After 40 learning is definitely not easy. Sax was a piece of cake starting at 12 years old. I'm wondering where should a student like me start to improve Guitar ? Thanks from Gmanjazz, Stuck on a middle pleateu somewhere in guitarland.

Well I’m over 40, but I’ve been playing almost 40 years now too. So for me, it was very tedious, and I had to keep fast forwarding as I was hoping to find some new breakthrough. When I should know by now, there really isn’t any new breakthroughs to learning the neck, ha ha. Anyway, maybe the title should be, “intermediate guitar players of all ages.” As I didn’t find this much different than other ways of memorizing the neck that I learned back in the 80s. But it sounds like some people here learned some things, so that is great! 👍🏻🎸

So let me make things clear in the debate on passing 40. Hey I am 68 and the thing is that I am a multimusician and when I don’t practice drums (both electronic and acoustic) or practice keyboard or etudes on my classic flute. ( when I was 20 I travelled around Europe as a street musician.) Then, I for sure also get a lot of fun learning more on guitar and base. If you might, for example have seen Paul McCartney 78, you might also have had another point of view about age. And to learn, is the most beautiful things in life, and it is something you can do long as you live. The result is not important, it is that you try to do your best and enjoy it that is the meaning. The guys that become masters are there to inspire us. ❤️🎶 Today I will spend most of the time with Logic in my home studio!🎧🎶

I’m not sure this is the cage , this is more like where the octaves are , the concept of the cage is to say start on a C chord now play using the A shape , then G shape & E &D spelling out caged , and each shape change starts off from the previous chord shape

Careful , the CAGED system does what it’s called ..it’ll get you stuck in a box or cage .. best learn also what each notes effect is 9th, 6th 3rd etc ..... and get out of that cage fast

I'm not sure if I can play the guitar I've been trying to play Bach's toccata I can some of it but some of it seems impossible I am able to play Bach's bourree and I can play the second waltz some people that have heard me play say that I'm amazing but other people get very angry and it seems like I might have fight them
