My deep green corn is at late V-3. It's the first year trying to grow corn AND I am trying to grow corn in 15 gallon grow bag. I am using Botanical Interests True Gold sweet corn. I soaked 12 seeds overnight in water and then planted in 2 6-pak containers until they reached almost V2; at which point I transplanted the 9 sprouted seedlings into the grow bag. The grow bag is filled with a layer of wood mulch/chips, a 2" layer of steer manure, grow mulch soil and garden soil. I left 4 inches to top dress as needed. I have watched a few videos on corn in containers and thought what do I have to lose but $3,49 for the packet of seeds and the water; all the other stuff I already had at hand and was not using it. Crossing my fingers or should I say brace roots for a good harvest!! 🌽

One of my chickens got out today and helped herself to some corn plants. I put her back in the run and within an hour she was out again. I found her escape route and hopefully stopped that. I have some composted chicken manure and that's all the fertilizer my corn has had so far. It's nice and green but I will be giving it some more when it gets taller. Everything but the flour we had for supper came from the garden and freezer. New potatoes, cabbage with sausage and some pork butt.

Thank you Lazy Dog Farm for showing this much need to watch video. I never had much luck with 'hilling' the corn because the watering eroded the 'hilling' away leaving the corn plant exposed to high wind knock overs. So now I dig six inch deep ditches and plant the corn seed at the bottom of the ditches. Then as the corn grows, I rack in the dirt into the ditches which prevents erosion of the dirt. In fact over time the dirt solidifies around the base of the plant giving the plant added strength to withstand high winds. And it works very well because none of my corn plants get knocked over by high wind. I grow Silver King or Queen Sweet Corn.

Listen, my favorite part about this video is that I am watching it the day after my four year old discovered the cartilage in his ear and swore that he’s growing a second set of ears. The thumbnail declaring, “GROW BIG EARS!” Just made me laugh my entire face off. I swear I’m crying. 😂

I want to thank u for all the help u gave me in setting up my fruit tree watering system. I think I finally got everything I needed ordered. I’m a 70 yr old widow & since I don’t have my husband around anymore I was having problems figuring it all out. I have planted a mini orchard of elderberries, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi & of course ur figs. Probably a big undertaking for my age. But hopefully I will still b around to enjoy them. Getting a watering system in for it will b a lot easier for me & hopefully b more successful with this new endeavor. Thx u again👍

Notes I've collected for corn: count the leaf 'collars' for 'V' growth stage rather than an arbitrary plant height (so V1 is one leaf collar) ... During V1-V6 the plant needs to be competition-free (weeds or other too-close corn plants) to prevent yield loss. Number of Kernel Rows are set at V8, Ear length is set at V14 -- so poor rain/nutrients at those stages reduce yield. Plant consumers the most Nitrogen starting after V7 as well as seeking the most Potassium/Potash/K, and it needs Sulfur/sulfate/S leading into tasseling. (source: corn growth cycle chart 'weekly nutrients required to grow 400 bushel corn per acre'). Maybe that helps some folks.

Two years ago we had a whole legion of army worms in my area. It was very interesting on what they would eat and not. They love my grass root, some types of lettuce (not all), chopped down a pea plant, eat my green onions, but left my tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers almost completely untouched. I came into some nature safe 5-6-6 "starter" it's granular opposed to the pelleted 8-5-5.the 5-6-6 has a higher load of mag, cal, iron, manganese than the 8-5-5 . The transplants with 5-6-6 had notably better color at the start and have turned out more flower production than the same varieties fertilized with the 8-5-5(tomatoes). All plants getting equal shots of Agro thrive through drip. Not sure if the notable difference is due to the equal ratio, extra micros or faster availability from it being granular. thought it was worth mentioning

Hey Travis umm they are doing corn trials adding a lot of fresh wood chips that have been innoculated with the spores of wine cap mushrooms. Something about the mushroom mycelia gives your corn desease resistance and as an added benefit it will break down you stalk and provide you with dinner plate sized mushrooms that are edible. Just thought you might want to know.

Those army worms will also get into your toe-maters and other veggies if they figure out you have other beds. In addition to Spinosad sprays, for a smaller garden like ours, we go out at night with a UV LED flashlight and the little buggers glow (depends on the variety of army worm as to what part of them glows the brightest - usually that stripe). If you hold a glass with soapy water under them and touch near them, they will try and drop to the ground - and into the soapy water. The tomato horn worm will also glow under UV. I suspect a Dawg's cup with soapy water would be the most effective control of those wiggly critters.

It can be, but it's not super fast. Just apply it to the soil before planting.

Travis please help me . I'm not the mathamation you are . My drip tape puts out 1.51 gph ,18 inch pacing . Please help me know how long to run it per week. I live in blueberry country just west of you. Therefore utilizing drip tape for berries but it works. Thanks for your help.😊

Run it until the soil around the plants looks saturated. The time it takes for that to happen will depend on how dry it is and your soil type.

That was too much fertilizer for sweet corns in which I am very concerned about consumers who buy direct from your farm or at the grocery store . It was unbelievable seeet corns grew up with this kind of fetishized most likely selling in the markets today !
