Here's a draft tip I didn't know until after 3-4 months of doing them. If you hold down the "alt" button in the picking screen it will tell you how many of a card you have. Check mark means you have 4/4, but otherwise it will say 0/4,1/4,2/4 or 3/4. Useful if you are using the drafts for rare drafting so you can decide if you want to draft the bad rares or pass them.

Well put - the balance between efficiency vs enjoyment is a key point in my view. It's great to see you presenting the information on how to be most efficient (always good to know, even if not following it - an informed choice is a better choice), while also acknowledging that efficiency doesn't have to be the only metric. As for what I tend to do (and will probably continue) - I save up around 50k gold, spend about 30k of that on packs and generally save the rest for drafts etc (since I don't enjoy draft so much) - that gets me a reasonable headstart on the new cards and then generally either jump in or a pack each day that I earn at least 1k gold. Obviously, this is less efficient, but it works for me. I tend to save wildcards more for the later part of a season, since I often find that I'm less interested in some of the cards I may have spotted during pre-release than I thought I would be, and unexpected others seem to build towards more enjoyable decks. I will certainly pay a little more attention to jump in early on this time around, I wasn't aware that it was a guaranteed 'new' (un-picked) pack in round 1, so that changes the balance a bit for me (and I quite enjoy the jump in games, so it's win win). I do aim to be doing more drafts this season, so you've at least persuaded me that far ;)

Great stuff - bang on advice 👍. The only additional information I’d mention is how the new Golden packs have helped to make buying packs move closer to providing the value one can derive from quick drafting. For those who really don’t like the quick draft experience, it’s an alternative to consider. It also helps to fill in the blanks in your collection from previous Standard sets.

As a new player, I love your advice. Also, I don't enjoy drafting so instead I do standard events to get the battle pass then get packs after. Not exatcly being efficient. But it works for me. I made 80% of the last set in one month.

There's nothing wrong with that. Standard events are pretty good at converting gold into gems, so if you do those and spend the rest on the most recent packs, then I can see that working out pretty well.

I want to start by saying I started playing MTG with real cards in the mid 90's. I fell in love with the game and attended tournaments with my friends and bought actual cards. We would build decks and challenge each other all the time in big get togethers. I had so much fun tinkering with the range of cards to see what would work. The internet wasn't what it is today so we had to use our ingenuity to figure out a strategy. I wish we had this again. I have been trying to use your videos to get back into MTG through the Arena platform. Maybe it's because I'm old but I am having a lot of trouble. There are so many card mechanics now I doubt semi-casual players can play the game the way it was back then. I get confused in the middle of games figuring out how each mechanic work and with the timer I often just have to play the best power/toughness card not knowing the actual affects. I even bought the starter gem package. The game has become too complex because of too many different mechanics in my opinion. Do you have any suggestions for someone like me?

You just have to play honestly. I started a few months ago and played a lot of "Jump In". So many different mechanics, but once you play for a while you start to figure them out. Took me like 2 months to figure out how to use Ninjitsu lol.

In that window before Quick Drafts fire up you can do Premier & Traditional drafts if you’ve a little experience and still do well as no-one has used the cards yet. Also - Sealed gives you 6 normal sized packs (not Arena packs) so is great way to start the format with a big head start on cards by just doing one. Oh - and a quick question that we’ve been chatting about in my group - when is the best time to crack those Golden packs? I’m saving mine til after the ONE draft flurry that I’m planning for the launch weekend.

The best time to crack the golden packs is 'as late as possible', but that means you don't get the value from them until later on. I'm going to open mine after my main quick draft spree after the first few weeks. If you wanted to make sure you get the most long-term value out of the golden packs, you could save some of them until rotation happens, then they'll give you 6 rares all from the most recent set (I'm guessing).

Thanks for this, Martin! One question I have is about the daily/weekly rewards. Does the weekly reset with the new set release? If not, how does that affect Mastery progress? Should I sit pat and wait until tomorrow to go through my daily rewards? ETA: it looks like my XP reset down to zero today, so I suppose the decision has been made for me 😁

You should be back to 0 weekly wins since the normal weekly reset yesterday. Tomorrow when the app updates for the new set, everything will reset again, so you'll have rewards available for another 15 weekly wins and three new daily gold quests. I'd recommend completing as much of them now as possible, otherwise you'll basically lose them.

If you don't like or want to do draft games, then buying packs are ok as an alternative, but drafting is definitely better to start with. I'll have some videos on drafting tips coming out soon, before the first quick draft season starts.

One issue with quick drafts is that if you're interested in getting rares/mythics, opening packs gets you more wildcards, because you don't get wildcards from picking cards in a draft. (unless you do well at the draft and get packs+mostly pay for the draft, but this can be a die roll)

I could make a video on Sealed events. My general thoughts are that it's a good way to get lots of commons and uncommons to start with, but you need to be able to get at least 3 wins for it to be worth it.

If you pick a Jump-In pack where you already have some of those cards in your collection, you'll still get the extra copies (up until 4 copies). If you already have 4 copies of any card, you'll get vault progress for any commons and uncommons, and you'll get gems for any rares and mythics.

can somemone please explain why its a good idea to use the common and wildcards early in the release? when you use jump in, does it give you the other uncommon/commons so get more sets unlocked faster? or is it only good if you are doing draft mode?

are you saving your daily gold quests (3x 750 or 500) and your weekly exp win rewards for tuesday when Phyrexia comes? I feel like this will maximize my mastery pass gains at the start. What are your thought?

The daily quests and weekly wins will all reset and reload when the new update happens, so it's best to use them all up before the update, and then you'll get them back again straight after.

Sealed is a higher entry cost, so you're putting more gems on the line. You need to win at least 3 games with Sealed for it to be worth it, and I imagine the competition would be tougher for that reason.

I've been holding off opening new packs for a while now. I've accumulated a few non-BRO packs. I'm guessing I'm not losing out on much if I open them just after 2-MAR? This would be after I've had a few Jump In half decks for those sets, but Quick Draft doesn't impact them, right?

I'd open any packs as soon as you're sure you don't want to draft that set any more. Quick Drafting after opening lots of packs increases your chance of getting gems instead of a new card if you have 4x of a rare/mythic card that you open in a draft pack. For any older packs, the principle is the same. As long as you're not planning to draft after opening the packs, then you shouldn't miss out on any cards. I'm not sure if that's answering your question or not. Is that what you mean?

I read somewhere that the meta game challenge is a good way to grind out some ftp value at the start of a new set too

It can be a great way to get lots of value out of a new set, but you only get one loss before you're out of the event, so you need to get at least 2 wins in a row first to get a small profit from the event. If you're really lucky and can get through a few wins without losing any matches, you would get a lot of value back!

There are normal constructed events that run all the time too, and they tend to be very rewarding if you are ‘ahead of the curve’ as a player

Is there a way to know if you have or have not selected a particular half deck in Jump In? My guess is I have not selected any of them because I have been away for a year or so, but it will help to know if I need to keep track myself moving forward or if there is an easy way to know. Thanks.

2nd related question??? Would it be a good idea to do the Jump In's from the BRO (in the next few hours) to collect each half deck combination now? I guess I'm asking, if I do all 6 half decks now, will only one or two be new/unique when ONE launches or all 6?

I'm not aware of any way to see which packs you've previously picked, unfortunately. If I had planned ahead, I would have made note of the ones I've picked, but I have to make a best guess now. I don't think it would make any difference to do the BRO ones now or not. There are 10 packs from each set, and if it does always show you at least one pack that you haven't picked yet, then it would show them after the release anyway. My plan is to do the event after the update and pick anything that I don't recognise as much. I know some of the ones that I've picked before, so I'm hoping it'll work itself out.

Question cause I am confused and a little overwhelmed, so I bought Welcome Bundle and Mastery Pass unlocked. I've opned all the packs I received as rewards. Was it a bad decision? Shall I keep it going forward? Ive read some saying to keep it and wait till this and that... thanks!

If you want to do some draft events, you'll potentially get more out of them if you've opened fewer packs, but I don't think it'll make too much difference for you if you've just opened a few of them. If you're not planning on doing any drafts, then you might as well just open packs as you get them and make the best constructed deck that you can from what you open.

You can look up lists online for most of the Jump In packs to see what rares and other cards you can get in them.

Few are new - not in the list I found (cutthroat for example - those are propably from recent patch) But mostly I get old sets. Is there a way to trick the game for new sets? I have even seen multiple of old ones. Or the problem is that my overall collection is new so the offer me everything to expand?

@@TheGiltanas The game will always offer you a pack that you haven't chosen before. There are at least 60 other packs (I think) that were released before the Phyrexia set, so if your account is new, there are lots of options for it to show you that aren't from the new set. If you pick two new ones every time you can in a new event, you should start to eliminate some of those options and you will get a chance to pick all the new ones as well. Cutthroat is one of the new ones :)

Why quick draft over premier draft?

For anyone who can reliably get 4+ wins in Premier Draft, then that's probably the best way to go. Quick Draft is what I recommend for the average player who is likely to get about 3 wins or less per draft. It's accounting more for the drafted cards than the gem rewards.

@@gameschooldadMTG I’m honestly jealous of the mono black deck that is out right now. It has such great synergy. But almost all the cards are either mythic or rare so I’ve not invested any wildcards towards it yet. It being a mono color deck is a great place for new players to start as the mana base can be all basic lands. When I played paper Magic getting all the none basic lands for each set was always top priority for me because it meant I had an easier access to any deck I wanted to play. For Arena that requires wild cards to be used which limits the amount of actual threats you can spend the wild cards on. The Mono Blue and Red Deck Wins one seem to be the most cost effective one is the Brothers War standard environment. Both only have between 8-12 rares depending on build and both are able to get wins fairly reliably. Keep up the great work as I really enjoy your content even if I have played the game since 1996. Your approach to getting the most out of Arena has made my time back a blast. I was going to email you about maybe doing a video about all the current codes you can enter to get 3 packs of cards per set. I wasn’t aware that there was so many that was still active. Last night I stumbled on them while searching for something else. Every two codes gives you enough packs to generate one rare or mythic wildcard. Thanks to the progression wheel and random wildcards I increase my rare wild cards from 2 to 12 and my mythic from 3 to 7. Bonus was out of all those packs I got 3 different rares that I had been wanting copies of to make other decks. I’ll still need to spend some wild cards to make the extra copies needed but it’s nice to get a few copies without having to craft them.

Thumbs down. This is completely and utterly confusing and impossible to follow. I stopped watching less than 4min in. Says not to open packs until the end. No explanation whatever. At all what the point is. Since it makes no difference when you open it. And you will need the cards from the pack to build current deck. Which will no longer work at the end when new cards are released. Then mentions mixing efficiency and enjoyability. There's no reason for this if just giving info of most efficient possible as a frame of reference.

The reason you might want to wait until later on to open packs is because they give you rare duplicate protection, meaning you'll always get a rare/mythic you don't already have 4x of, which is important if you want to more fully complete a set. BUT... holding on to packs for longer means delaying your ability to actually use those cards while they're new, so everyone needs to find the right balance for them between maximum efficiency and actually playing the game. If there's anything else you find confusing, then let me know and I can clarify it more 👍

@@gameschooldadMTG Nobody is going to continue watching if nothing is making any sense from the start. Due to vague information. It makes more sense now you mentioned about duplicate protection. Because i thought wotc was not doing that for Arena. And not at all explained in the vid. So yes that would mean some form of balance would be needed. Which is my case now that I have a few of the free dual decks. And bought the two starter bundles that give 6000 gems. Which I've only used for Mastery Pass so far. But I might start opening packs half way through if that's the case. Because I might get most of what I need to make a real Standard deck from playing in draft.
