another point that can be learned here: START with that structure formula. as soon as it works, you may still change the song at a later stage. make it more complicated later, not vice versa.

This! There is no formula, every song is different. The key is listening to the song and trying to figure out what the song wants to be. Not what YOU want it to be. That will always feel forced.

Yo, I just wanted to come back and leave an updated comment. Since watching this *just 10 days ago* I have recorded drafts of *FIVE finished songs* and I'm halfway through a sixth one. That's more than I usually finish in a damn YEAR! Nearly a finished song every two days! Are the songs great? HELL no. I would barely share these with anyone. But... BUT... there are some killer IDEAS in them - a hook and chorus here, a couple verses there, a bridge and a pre-chorus in another one... and I am *learning* soooo much by making these. And just getting over my ANXIETIES about finishing songs. Another source that has helped me write is the book "Write Better Lyrics" by Pat Pattinson, because I was having trouble writing words to my music. But the main thing is THIS VIDEO. I created an ultra-basic template exactly as described and picked a keyboard/synth plugin, got the 4 tracks set up (Keyboard, Vocal, Bass, and Drums with a basic drumbeat for each section) Then I just started writing and recording. I have this folder now called "Fast Shitty Songwriting" that takes all the PRESSURE off, since I *admit* the songs will mostly be crap, I just write and LEARN over and over again! I can tell I'm improving, though! It's helped me focus on good form and structure, not creating polished tracks, more like really focusing on the BASICS and ESSENTIALS of songwriting, which I always felt like I did NOT understand. Now, with each song I finish, it all makes more and more SENSE!!!!!! Just wanted to really thank you again man, it's making a major difference in my creative life. Love your videos

For someone who has had some experience with writing songs for rock bands back in early 00's. I believe some people didn't get what this video means. He didn't say you can't do anything other than this. He said this is one of the 300 ways he picked it up from studies he conducted and is the most common one. Now from there.... Some free awesome tips to makes your life easier and start getting somewhere. Creativity does play a key role in everything in Art. After all music is art. But it doesn't come from no where. One needs practice in order to achieve perfection and start making your own rules and understand some patterns. This is a simple way. And I have to say that if anyone knows a little bit about (or anything in life) music writing you would understand how far you can stretch simple ideas and transform into master pieces. Hopefully this makes sense to some folks down this comment section. Great video and thank you. Hopefully I'll see more material like this coming out. By the way rock is also pop music. ;)

I nearly always have the third verse start when the song is about 55-65% finished. Especially when the song is quite long (5:45 or longer). My structure: Intro > Verse 1 > (Pre 1) > Chorus 1 > Verse 2 > (Pre 2) > Chorus 2 > Middle section (Bridge or instrumental or both) > Verse 3 > (Pre 3) > Chorus 3 > Chorus 4 > Outro

I really appreciate this as a fundamentals of pop songwriting. The only thing that I would like to add to what you said throughout the video is that if you have an idea for something a little bit more experimental than this, you should definitely try it out. There are plenty of artists who don't really write songs in this manner. The major caveat to this is that if they're actually consistently good songwriters, I'm sure that they could write a song in this structure laid out by Friedmann here. And that this structure has been the foundation of what is probably the vast majority of pop hits (and a good amount of other genres) since pop hits were a thing. Great video as always though! Seriously, keep up the great work.
@augusto76816 жыл бұрын
Six String Sessions the structure of a song is important to me and I like to be surprised by one unconventional structure. Some songs doesn't work just repeating the chorus it loose power after many repetions.
@sixstringsessions40926 жыл бұрын
The thing is, it doesn't even have to be complex. Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan is easily one of the best folk songs ever written, and it doesn't have a true chorus. Just a repeated refrain at the end of each verse. But it's perfect in the simple message it's trying to convey. Again, like I said, I really love Friedmann's video and this is no exception; I just want to make sure that new songwriters don't take this very valuable advice and structure and end up throwing out certain ideas because it doesn't fit into this structure. If you wanna break the rules a bit you should - just as long as you understand *why* you're breaking those rules.

The musics from the singer Bjork usually are bit diffent. In "undo" is 3x Chorus-verse then outro. In "Pagan Poetry" is verse-chorus-verse-chorus-break-chorus-outro . She always put a gran finale in her composition the Outro part sometimes is bigger than the chorus and she always add variations to lyrics or change instruments after every chorus and verse. (i have others analysis of her songs in my chanel). Adele in "daydreamer" use verse-verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus. In progressive rock music is common find different structures too. In "gravidade" by scalene is verse-bridge-verse-bridge-chorus-verse-chorus in other music from the same band "cartão postal" is verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-outro.

@@billybowlegs7293 Billy Bowlegs I wasn't talking about knowing music theory, I was talking about song structure, so your comment has little to nothing to do with what I was saying. I know how to do those things but thank you. In response to your comment, all it takes is very basic music theory to write amazing songs on the piano and guitar, a lot of the most popular music in the world is written with just a few chords. It really doesn't take a few years of studying to write a good song. I learned the piano as I wrote the music to songs with lyrics and melodies that I have been writing since I was a kid. I now write play on the piano beautiful chord progressions to songs I wrote before I ever knew what chord progressions were. It doesn't take any special training to create pretty melodies for poetry, all it takes is some time and creativity. What puts me off about these videos and what you're saying is that I just feel like it discourages normal people from songwriting because they feel like they have to meet certain standards to express themselves through lyrics and melody. Writing music and melodies through middle and high school saved me, I wrote a new song everyday without an instrument just with the melodies and thoughts in my head and it made me feel proud I could express myself and make something beautiful out of nothing. If I watched a video like this back then it would have discouraged me. Writing music has no boundaries even if it's not commercially appealing. Most of the people watching these videos probably are not realistically trying to becoming commercial songwriters, they just want to write songs for themselves. I don't like how this guy tells people "Just use this! it is what works" "it's always better" and if they don't use it "they're making things complicated". I wish he clarified this formula is vaguely just what modern pop writers generally do and it's not necessarily the formula to writing worthwhile music. Clarify that people can put their songs together how it sounds best to them, instead of suggesting that fitting their melodies and lyrics to this structure is a must. That is what is not making writing music complicated and difficult for people is to me. I'm not mad, that's just my opinion.

"Don't bore us, get to the chorus" they say, seems like a little too long to get there for a pop song I think it's typically better to have the second verse be the 16 bar one but to each his own.

I know I'm super late to the party here, but man. This info is still gold. I always find myself struggling to put together elements into an actual structured song, but creating a template is brilliant. Definitely going to be adding this to my template!

He specifically says that this outline is for beginners to use. I use this in many of my songs just for consistency - the less variables I have to worry about, the more I can focus on the aspects of my writing I want to improve. That is what this outline is for in my opinion, not some holy grail outline this person is trying to force upon you. So to make sardonic comments about the video is kind of useless with that in mind, no?

this structure is not universal. it is a variant of verse chorus form, which is one of many standard forms(strophic, aaba, abac, verse refrain). within verse chorus form, you dont need a bridge necessarily(killing me softly), and in this case, the "late bridge" variant hes describing is not even really a bridge. it is more of a coda. this may not matter colloquially or to listeners but it matters to creators. bridges and codas function differently. the misnomer for the modern "bridge" is common language now, but structurally, it isnt a bridge. bridges "bridge" choruses together. "there must have been some magic in" is a bridge. "dasher and dancer and prancer and vixen" is a verse. "Rudolf the red nosed reindeer" is a chorus. Rudolf goes verse, chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus. "VAABA." modern verse chorus form is a mutation of these old fashioned tin pan alley forms. I digress. but it is important to know this rubric so you understand the fundamentals of form so you're not copying a template without really understanding why it pays off in the first place

These formulas really help. Anyone can find an example of a famous musician who doesn’t use theory or these types of planning structures. But that’s really rare, most people need the visualization before they can actually put writing into practice.

@@ViniAndradeMusic that is very true, although i find this vid a little to pushy for modern audiences on what might the result be like. As of a PERSONAL opinion i find that you should learn by the hands of actual popular artists and see why they succeed. Its not the music, that is trash; its how social people are that really makes them popular. I always find that making music is not for myself, it is for the people instead, as if im giving some sort of service.

If I use your template at 1:32, the song's length is only 2 minutes (at 120 BPM) isn't that a little short? if I wanna make a 4 on the floor pop dance song?
@ViniAndradeMusic6 жыл бұрын
You probably wanna write a song that's slower than 120 BPM. If you write a song in 100 BPM when you duplicate it (count faster) it will result in 200 BPM which is a pretty nice BPM. I'd say around 160 to 220 (duplicated) is a nice speed. You probably wanna write a song around 80 to 110. I don't know how many minutes it will result in this formula though.
