Yes but I often need to keep my sqealch knob very high. The high powered radio trolls are all over ch-19 jamming up the airwaves. That’s really what’s killing CB for truckers. Hearing the noise all day gets tiresome. We just want to talk to other drivers about road conditions etc.

I've noticed very few trucks have CB antennae on them any more. Just last weekend we were behind a flatbed with a CB antenna that was carrying pallets of what looked like cedar fence boards. Boards were coming out of the middle of a pallet on the back and one nearly hit our car. We tried to get his attention but he ignored us and I noticed not one other truck around had a CB. I raced ahead to get as far ahead of him as I could before there was an accident and when we got off our exit a few miles up the road, the exit paralleled the interstate for a way and he came by with boards still sliding out of the bundle. CBs are still a relevent and valuable tool for the road. I've never gotten around to putting CBs in our current vehicles because autos today have no flat areas and every square inch of space is occupied by something, no room to hang a radio under the dash, on the dash or overhead anymore.

There are some smaller CB radios out there. One is the Anytone Smart CB. The radio is the size of a pack of cigarettes.

Those signals from TN and MI are "skipping", their signals are bouncing off the ionosphere and coming back down a thousand miles away. Radio is more or less line of sight other than skip, so somebody 5 miles away might not hear you if there are tall buildings, hills or trees in the way while someone thousands of miles away might hear you if your signal bounces off the ionosphere. There are certain times of the day and year when skip is more likely to occur. Nightime during the summer can be a good time, I used to listen to a radio station from Chicago during the summer while living in the Atlanta suburbs back in the 1970s and 80s. Periods of high solar flare activity can also make for good skipping opportunities. As far as not making local contacts, it could be because there are just very few people on CB anymore. I have a ham radio reciever and I often scan the CB frequencies while I'm in my office working or paying bills and I have never heard anyone on CB in the 3 years we've been here and we are less than a quarter mile from the only north/south interstate in the northern two thirds of the state.

For instant communication with the trucker ahead of you that has smoke coming from a trailer brake or something like that, yes. With GPS, Google Maps and Waze, there's not much need for getting directions or warnings about traffic or speed traps over the radio anymore.
