I worked in the system for about my first 10 years of working getting a regular paycheck. I hated it. I started my own business and built it up in the first year so much so my husband was able to quit his job and come work for our business. We made our own hours and generally only worked at the most 4 days a week. Worked it around our kids and life for 30 years then sold it and retired early. We have a paid for homestead and supplies and food for the next two years or so. We love our life. When i had my own business i always said i don't have to make coffee for anyone i don't want to. LOL. To me it is far better to be your own boss if you can. Most all of my bosses when i worked for other companies were idiots and i always felt i was the one correcting their mistakes, but never got credit or the big money. I finally said i can do better for myself and family making my own way. Most people just don't believe enough in themselves to take the plunge. What a shame. Edit in: We also live frugally andd have low bills, mostly just pay for services such as electric, internet, phones, and health insurance. Land, house, and vehicles are all paid for.

@@CassieDavis613 we did water treatment. My husband use to work for the city, but they started wanting him to fudge reports of which he refused to do. It would have been his license on the line, not the cities. I got my water license and worked for a separate company until I left and started my own business. Then a year later brought him on.

I love to calculate every penny I spend. Unfortunately, live on Social Security, so we do have to count to pennies … We never overspend, yes, sometimes we do treat ourselves to some thing, the grandkids always get birthday and Christmas gifts. But being materialistic in this day and age is not for us. We have what we need and that’s all that matters.

Keep living intentionally guys. We have the same mindset and watching your videos inspires us to keep going through the tough times that we all face. Lets make it intentional to build each other up instead of trying to tear each other down. I think it is helpful to address the negative comments and you got a good balance there with ending with the positive comments. The nasty comments come from a place of misunderstanding, lack of education and deep bitterness usually through jealousy. I feel sorry for those people they are missing out on a better way of living.

Really enjoyed this. Your husband is so articulate and witty. We admire your values and independence. The financial education you have given your daughter who has moved out was/is fantastic parenting. I wish I had had a headstart like that. Keep doing you and remember there are a lot of us who find value in what you share. A video about your husbands poverty upbringing and what he has learnt along the way plus comparisons of what is poverty would be interesting.

This has been such a great vlog. Your perspective has been eye opening (as has people’s comments and expectations.) One thing that jumped out to me - it’s so obvious that we seem to live in a world where so many people project their values and beliefs on to others. It’s just sad. Be kind people. Celebrate the differences we all have. Lead by example and action instead of being an armchair quarterback.

When you're doing what you love to do during your working years, retirement just becomes what will you do when you can't work anymore. I think that's a hard concept to understand for some people who are working the 9-5 grind at a job they can barely tolerate. On the furgal side of things, it is always fun for us to see how much we can save and never pay full price for anything. It's up to the couple to decide who works and when. There were many times that my husband took care of the kids while I worked since I got my degree first and made more. Some people are hung up on trying to force people into a box. Their energy would be better spent taking care of their own lives instead of judging others. Y'all are doing great!

I think you both are living your own lives. You have taken care of your family and are hard workers. People seem to forget that working your land and being self reliant was the way of life not to long ago. My grandparents worked and toiled their land, canning food and storing things up for the wintertime. They never owned a car. My grandfather had only a wagon and a mule and they weren't poor at all. My grandmother sewed and made all they shirts, quilts and sheets and more. They made handmade furniture and sold it at the edge of their land by the road they lived near. The things I learned from them I handed down to my next generation. Pay no attention to comments. You both are doing wonderful and I applaud you both. Keep up the good work and enjoy your life and happiness you have. Work your land, build your homestead and grow your KZbin channel. I'm glad to see how smart you are with your money and how you make good choices for the important purchases you do need to make. Those skills are good to have in life. Your skills are wise lifetime skills that can be useful in any situation. Keep up the good work and make your life a happy one. I love the way you both have dedicated your life to all your kids. Listen, everyone has problems in life. No one is perfect. You both are wise and dedicated to your goal. Go for it , your already making it happen. Katie and Asher, you can cook, plant a garden, raise animals and plan your way thru life. Keep at it, you are a team !!

A humble point of view from an older person... frugality is more complex than simply the number of dollars you save now. Frugality also involves making decisions that support your current self and your future self. As an example, you may find that even slowly working toward a college degree or work specific certificate or new training will ultimately help you to save money, find a job with a pension, or extend your working life to help support your retirement. Degrees and certificates don't guarantee future support, but they offer new potential opportunities.

I am always shocked at the insulting comments that people make on your videos, simply because you choose to live a different lifestyle than what they were taught is the only acceptable lifestyle, as well as the assumptions they make about you. Anyone who has been watching your videos should know that Asher works HARD every day. On many of youur videos he can be seen building things on your property, clearing land, caring for the animals, and so much more. Your child is obviously happy and curious about life. And you work together as a team, always thinking about what is best for your entire family and how every decision might affect your future. Our dream is to live like you guys. We are currently looking for land and starting our plans for that rich lifestyle and we both can’t wait to achieve them. I’ve always shopped at Goodwills and picked up things on the side of the road…..not because we are poor but because I like to. Now I get friends and family all the time asking me to start looking for things for cheap or free cause it’s my hobby that I really enjoy doing.
