People across the country are dying in ways they have not planned for - that's if they have planned at all. [Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
The charity Compassion in Dying says we need a culture shift in the way we approach death in the UK.
In polling shared exclusively with Channel 4 News 1 in 4 people said that the last close relative or friend who died received medical treatment they would not have wanted. They also found more than 4 in 5 people people would want to prioritise their quality of life over living longer in the last years of their life.
But as doctors have told this programme, there also needs to be better training for clinicians dealing with patients at the end of their lives.

This was so similar to what happened to my mum who had macular degeneration of the eyes and couldn't see, who had had a stroke and couldn't talk or walk. At 91 years the junior doctor insisted on antibiotics as she had 'to be given a chance'. In the end we insisted on seeing a consultant who agreed for treatment to stop. But these conversations were had in busy corridors, I asked but there was nowhere private to go, my mum was on a ward with 4 others and we weren't allowed to stay the night so she died without us which is something I will never get over. It should never have been such a battle as I knew my mum's wishes and I just wanted her to have a peaceful death with her family around her.

yes. Just because you can do something, does not mean you should! Peace and dignity in dying, without having to fight for it!

Euthanasia is the last dignity of the dying. It's crazy we don't let people end their lives in peace. It's much more to do with the livings fear of death, than the needs of those who are about to die.

If I was diagnosed with a terminal illness or chronic health condition that would lead me to being completely disabled then I would want to die. This should not be a controversial issue My grandparents passed away recently. They went down in the worst possible way and it was hard to imagine how they used to be. If they were in their right mind knowing how bad it would get and how it would deprive them of their identity there is no way they would have wanted to live through that needlessly suffering. They would have wanted to die no question about it

Government would be delighted by your response it would mean less expense on medical bills etc. seriously until someone in that position you dont know how you would actually feel you are guessing. My grandmother lived to 98 she had a hard life but a well lived life she danced and had lots of friends she ate fresh foods and never owned a car , for years she filling herself up with prescribed pills from her 50’s onwards . She giggled her way through life and had lots of hobbies and interests she never had much cash but wow did she leave a big hole. She worked on health she would do stretches everyday she would take sensible health precautions and enjoy a little of what she liked that translates as chocolate and cakes. She ate an apple a day which didnt keep the doctor totally away as by all accounts he fancied her and asked for her hand in marriage several times 😂 but basically dont be negative about the future . When my nanny at 98 eventually got sick enough to pass away she said to my mum. That she had a good life but she was ready……… we are now living in a world where people living to that age are considered an economic drain. Dont get sucked in. Yes a few people with very serious conditions may need medical assistance to pass away but that is a very very few. The rest of this debate is about economics and it sucks. What is life without love and hope.

@@lisadefries6718 For a lot of people with severe health problems, on the mental side you would be in a completely different conscious place if you were at a severe stage of decline. A much lower conscious place so whether in that moment you would want to die or not doesn’t reflect you as you were at your fullest. This is why people want these decisions to be made when they are in their right mind. I can only imagine what dementia is like but I would say aside from severe memory loss it is also twinned with severe brain fog. You are absolutely not alert and not with it. Your identity is different ultimately - you regress mentally very significantly. It is a much lower state of consciousness and I would really not want to be have to be kept alive like that To consider whether you would want to die or not if you were to ever reach that stage can really only be properly considered from a higher state of consciousness. There’s also the whole notion we have around death. I’m not going into that here but as a society we are deeply disconnected from spirit. I think the economic point you mentioned is a red herring. For people that feel strongly about it economics has nothing to do with it. It is about suffering and the right to your own body. The body may die but consciousness doesn’t

That’s my fear as well. And as I’m fairly young, I’m afraid they would overrule my wishes, despite I suffer from debilitating conditions nearly three decades and I have more and more complications…

I am your sister from Yemen, and by Allah I only spoke out of hunger and distress. My mother, my brothers, and I lessons and tears. We are in a situation that only God knows about. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. Poverty, O world, they have felt it So, I hope for you. By Allah Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, he ate what I had in the house. By Allah, my brothers, he is my brothers by sitting in the house. Who has no food? By God, we are in a very difficult situation. We have 4 people entering the house, and my father has died, and there is no one who can depend on us and who lives in it.We live in a rented house because we cannot pay the rent we owe. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''' My brother, my first words are: I swear to God that I will not lie to you or deceive you. I am a Yemeni girl displaced from the war. My family and I live in a rented house in Al-Shahrab 20,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 60,000 for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. He comes every day, insulting us, talking about us, and moving from the house to the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back. They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by God. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By God, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to God, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Then, I ask you to help me for the sake of God. I ask you, by God, to love goodness and to help me, even if you can, by messaging me on WhatsApp.On this number 00967716638472 and ask for the name of my card and send it and do not be late and may God reward you with all the best, my brothers Sagar, see how they are and help us and save us before they throw us out in the street, you will be lost or we will die of hunger. My family and I ask you, by God, if you are able to help us, do not be late and may God reward you well..`/--~«««~-♡~♡~♡~~•~•~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~~♡♡♡;~،~~.،;&;&&;;&🕋☪️☪️ ~:~¡~¡~¡،،~;:I.i.i.i..i.ii!}𝖊≋𝖊𝖊~≋𝖊. i.I.|-◖'˹˛˹˛˹˛˹˛˹˹˛˹˛˹`˛`.;!.|i,]........~π~√~√""""!😢😢😢😢😢😢
