I wanted to pursure being a coach ( while at university) after i became a bluebelt. My coach was very supportive however it was the BJA that had missed the paperwork or info i sent over while trying to communicate issues that went on with regards the appolication. We were a small university club yet quite successful, it was the lack of support from the BJA especially the university level that was disappointing leading to many that wanted to continue to stick judo to fall out let alone pursue being coaches or involved in judo some how. One important thing to keep in mind in that for allot especially those who are keeping judo as a passion are hit by the price increase of everything especially gas and elec. That can force many to "trim the fat" in terms of their expenses. Judo just may be one of those expense people cant always continue especially if clubs charge minimum £5 per session lasting only an hour.

There definitely needs to be a shake up on how coaches qualify and are supported throughout the process. I think within a university set up money will always be of concern but there are plenty of martial arts (and sports) that are far more expensive than judo so do not believe it is a deciding factor on whether people do it or not! 👍

Interesting topic vince. I think we really need to get judo to embrace professionalism. It’s a good thing. Rushjudo is a charity but in hindsight I wish I’d set it up as a business. That way I could be full time coach instead of doing two full time jobs ! Keep up the good work.

Yes I think many people do the same thing in good faith, but I am sure the way forward is setting up more 'professional' clubs: creating more classes, coaches and opportunities.

@@thejudocoach completely agree. What started off for me as 1 night a week for a couple of hours has turned to being open 4 nights a week. That was never the plan. Deffo looking into the charity employing coaches moving forward. 👍🏻

Viable Judo pathways need to be developed, publicized and business skills taught to the youth on how to make a living from judo. We need to get to the point where when a parent asks a child “Will judo be able to feed your family?” The child should be able to pull out the information about the viable pathways, with average income data and the support from the community that are available to help them in their pursuit of a life in judo. The National Judo bodies should as well be supportive of such persons and help clear their growth path.
