Do we need to learn how to repair smartphones? - BBC News

A UK firm that fixes smartphones is calling for an official device repair apprenticeship to be introduced.
TMT First, which introduced its own apprenticeship after struggling to find staff, points out there is no industry training standard.
In 2022 there were almost 72 million mobile phone connections in use in the UK.
By contrast, there are 33 million cars on UK roads - and mechanics train on nationally recognised apprenticeships.
This film is from Click - the BBC’s flagship technology programme.

its not actually that hard, its the company that manufactures it just makes it hard by design so they can charge you more or make you buy the new model

Which is why our household has Fairphones...the ability to repair electronics should be legally mandated. 'But - apart from that - an apprenticeship is a good idea. Will suggest that to my local politician.

In 2013 my smartphone had a metal hatch to make replacing the battery easy. Phone lasted me until 2017. My current Samsung has the battery literally glued into to the case, meaning it gets damaged if you try to replace it. What we 'need' is for all phones by law to have easily replaceable batteries. It should not be down to the consumer.

Apple talks a lot about the environment even though they are the primary culprit of planned obsolescence. They purposefully build smartphones to be non-repairable. They are here to make their shareholders happy. It's infuriating how the fanboys support them after the headphone jack removal.

As others are saying, we as consumers aren't the problem, it's the manufacturers. Smartphones just aren't user friendly to repair when compared to other similar devices like desktop computers, laptops and a variety of other tech products. Personally, I've taken apart things like desktop computers, laptops and audio equipment to either repair parts, replace them with new working parts or retrieve data as most devices are designed in ways that let you work on them or at least send them off to someone more skilled. Sadly, most phones now are glued together and seem to be requiring increasingly complex tools and methods to repair them. Only the manufacturers can change that, not us as consumers.

Most electrical gadgets from hair dryers to smart phones are made not to be repaired on purpose so you have to keep buying the latest products. More often than not phone batteries become unavailable and simple cables that could be replaceable are secured in the appliance (hair dryers, vacuum cleaners etc) using security screws or even bonding parts together.

Yes! Apple makes it hard by design to repair the iPhone and in order to force the consumer a buy the new model. This consumer addition for new model, has been the Apple core business model for years. In order to break this break this cycle, 1- people must realized that the new models of iPhone are bringing little value added; 2- people must hold on to their iPhone longer; 3- people must make an effort to have their iPhone repaired.

20 repairs per day, with average cost 200 pounds will be 4000. Then 20 working days means technician get 80 000 every month?Almost a millon in one year? It's a lot of money, damn

20 repairs a day * 200 = 4000 . The technician gets less than 100 a day. That is why they struggle with recruiting. TMT First recruits a lot of Romanians, Polish, Russians, etc. But mostly Romanians. They put you in a low oxygen low light room and the security measures drain the life off you. Working there feels like being a prisoner on work release. It suits the Romanians. Low wages result in difficulty to recruit.

Fun story, on my high school graduation party my iPhone 6 slipped out of my suit and went on the floor. Amidst the partying I jumped on it a few times before noticing. It did not look pretty after that :D

.... Do you know Jesus Christ can set you free from sins and save you from hell today Jesus Christ is the only hope in this world no other gods will lead you to heaven There is no security or hope with out Jesus Christ in this world come and repent of all sins today Today is the day of salvation come to the loving savior Today repent and do not go to hell Come to Jesus Christ today Jesus Christ is only way to heaven Repent and follow him today seek his heart Jesus Christ can fill the emptiness he can fill the void Heaven and hell is real cone to the loving savior today Today is the day of salvation tomorrow might be to late come to the loving savior today Romans 6.23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus

That was Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge she dropped. Obviously, I dropped it on the first day I bought it. And I was surprised about the amount of web of cracks that single drop created. So thanks SAMSUNG and take you cake with your tea off.

Apple is the reason why this has become standard in the phone industry! How did we as consumers let this happen!! A phone where it’s very difficult to change the battery yourself or a screen that is smashed easily would have been frowned upon in the early 2000s. How did it get to this!

It's not about that we all need to learn how to repair smartphones. It's the FREEDOM to do it whether you like it or not. Not all people has the technical ability to repair such gadgets, but some people who can must have the FREEDOM to do so. BBC again missed the point.
