What else could another adaptation bring ?

I desperately want to see a good Mansfield Park adaptation! I actually thought the casting of the 1999 version was perrrrrrrfect - except for Fanny, and of course all the changes the script made to her character, and little adjustments to the plot and dialogue... no. But alas. I doubt any production company would have the gumption to create a movie or series about a heroine who is, externally anyway, shy and meek - look what they did to poor Anne Elliot, who was never even either of those things! Speaking of, I do think the recent Persuasion adaptation had a few redeeming features, but it was too uneven and the cringey anachronistic moments were just... ugh. Octopus on your face, indeed.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall tackles such a deep and hard to talk about topic though that the movie would be hard to market. There's the issue that people come into period dramas expecting a feel-good movie, whereas The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a gritty, realistic depiction of what an abusive marriage was like in the Victorian era and the few options open to women wanting to escape.

@@MorganJ some Dickens or Hardy adapations did succeed in the past and they are also harsher (like say Bleak House and Tess of the D'Urbevilles). The 90’s Tenant of Wildfell Hall is amazing. It sticks very close to the book, it’s beautifully shot, and all the actors are amazing and famous, though more among Brits. What I'd *really* love to see is a miniseries of The Count of Monte Cristo, I think the last one we got was the early 00s one that peeled back the plot to the bare bones, and lost so much fun and juicy drama. There's so much there to work with, and I think all the adaptations leave out the fun supporting characters from the whole "revenge" section. More screen time could dig into Haydee, the Greek princess who's always forgotten but could be part of a theme of gender and class inequality that's dropped. Eugène Dangars, the daughter of one of his enemies, who didn't want to marry and runs off to be a musician is all but canonically queer rep. There's enough plot and themes and commentary that nothing has to be invented or inserted, just lifted up and clarified and it would be *sensational* in the hands of the right production team. They want the next Game of Thrones, it's right there.

If you can get your hands on the 1996 "The Tennant of Wildfell Hall" it is well worth watching. It's quite faithful to the source material and Tara Fitzgerald is perfectly cast as The Tennant. For me, if they want a Bronte (and please NOT a Blonde Jane Eyre!), then "Villette" might be worth a shot - though they might have to do something about the unreliable narrator/central character... While they are at it, it's been quite a while since we had any George Elliot adaptations and something like "Silas Marner" would offer potentials for either a straight adaptation or a modern retelling featuring a former American Evangelical in the title role...

The problem with "Do we need another adaptation of" videos is that we don't know if we need it until we actually get it. Did we need another The Thing movie? The original 1950s version was actually really good. Did we need another The Fly? The eighties versions of both became the one everyone thinks of. I'll bet most people didn't know the Curt Russel The Thing was a remake. If it's well cast, well adapted, and says something that the previous adaptations do not, then this one may supplant the 1990s version of Pride and Prejudice. If any of these aspects are lacking, then it will come out and quickly be forgotten as most people will gravitate back to the 1990s TV show or the 2000s movie. (Or maybe --gasp-- read the novel.) Personally, I don't see a problem with new adaptations. Have fun with them if they're good, or toss them in the proverbial dumpster if they aren't.

OHMYGAWDYES!!! Carmilla!!!! How in the world are there no movie adaptations of that yet? That would be excellent! A problem with many adaptations, IMO, is that classic/Victorian novels tend to be long, and so a lot of the story gets sacrificed. It's a major reason why I've hated all movie versions of The Woman in White -- although a multi-part TV series might be able to do it justice. Same with Count of Monte Cristo - I think you just have to read the book, which granted at 1200+ pages will seem daunting to many people. But Carmilla is an excellent choice: whopping good story in a relatively short novella. By the way, if you do have Disney channel, several months ago they did a show called "Renegade Nell" - some of the people behind it also did "Gentleman Jack." I don't know if it is based on a book (and if so, it is a modern one), but it was a fantastic show. Set in late 1700s, about a woman who becomes a "highwayman" and crusader for revenge/justice. It had a bit of a fantasy element to it. It's kind of like a fantasy fanfiction of history. Really good!

Tbh I agree that this would be a good time for a Mansfield Park adaptation, but for different reasons and with a different preferred focus: I think the potential is there for a sensitively-handled narrative about surviving abuse. Because in modern parlance, 'abuser' absolutely *is* the role which Mrs Norris plays towards Fanny, and to a greater or lesser extent, all of the Bertrams bar Edmund (who consistently defends Fanny against Mrs Norris if nothing else) are Mrs Norris' enablers at some point.

I was onboard until you said Dolly Alderton 😂 my favourite definitely the 1995 bbc mini series but my best friend’s favourite is the film with Keira Knightly, so I feel like a new adaptation will be someone’s favourite!!!

The only things I'd want from another adaptation are a) Greta Gerwig at the helm, and b) Anna Popplewell (Susan from Narnia) and Georgie Henley (Lucy) being reunited as onscreen sisters as Jane and Lizzy respectively. Anna would be a great Jane and after seeing bits of Georgie on _The Spanish Princess_ I'm convinced that girl is a hugely underrated actress and actually has the range to pull off a great Lizzy. Yes, we're all ancient and she's old enough to play the part now. I know it's too much wishful thinking on my part though especially since Greta's too busy (coincidentally) fighting with Netflix to let her release her Narnia reboot in theaters

I liked that Tenant of Wildfell Hall movie. I remember when I first watched it on A&E (back when they showed a lot of those movies). I would be OK with a new one though. But yes, while I love Austen, there are so many other works that could be made into movies/series. P&P (1995) was perfect don't mess with it. Unlike previous P&P adaptions it doesn't look like the 60s etc pretending to be Regency England. Whatever they do make, just don't mess with it trying to make it about a girl boss etc like the latest Persuasion mess

The 1995 version is perfect and my favorite. But I love the 2005 one too. Both were made before I was born lol. Saying this as an 18 year old! Some of us don't want another one!

Good to see you Claudia. I guess each generation wants their own version of P&P - but please let it not be made by the folks that made that awful version of Persuasion (my favorite Austen). I would like to see an updated adaptation of some of these novels: The Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann Therese Racquin by Emile Zola The Golden Bowl by Henry James A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton Sunset Song by Lewis Gribbon

I only saw the 2 last BBC series. I should look for the first 4. I admit I am part of those who stopped going to the movies. I used to have a subscription and go a lot. I switched to a streaming subscription. I could not stand anymore being in a room with smartphone screens lighting up every few seconds somewhere in the theater catching the eye. And also with people answering to the same smartphones and having their conversations just as in their living room.

I loved the BBC'S Tennant of Wildfelhall adaptation so much I tried to read it but as must have been only 11 or 12 at the time I gave up because the read was too challenging. I've read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights as an adult so perhaps it's time to give Tennant another go.

Yes ('Fire Island' which should've had a theatrical release) and no (Netflix has too many misfires). As a Gen Z Queer South Asian, I've had 'Bride and Prejudice' and 'Fire Island' (alongside the classic Keira Knightley period drama where a hot guy is down bad for her).

As much as I love the mid-'90s adaptation of Tenant, I am dying for a remake. It's such a forward-thinking novel and still so relevant, especially if you have experience with alcoholics. Anne Bronte deserves more attention than she gets! We don't need yet another Jane Eyre, and as far as I'm concerned, the 2011 adaption of Wuthering Heights is the best we're going to get. There's no need to revisit either novel for a while, and I would rather filmmakers focus on the Bronte's other works if we're going to get more adaptations.

I wouldn't say need, as it was an essential for keep on living. But we can always have one more to compare and say that 2005 was so much better and that none will ever beat 1995 BBC. Same goes for the actors casted for Lizzie and, primarily, Darcy's role.
