READ THIS BEFORE COMMENT: Let me clear up that this video is not a demo of a product. And especially not A SOUND DEMO of a product. As you can CLEARLY SEE in the title, it's asking a broader question whether or not we still need traditional amps, and what can be used to replace it, and what the consequences of this would be. I'm explaining how you can use a pedal like this, at home are in live situations. I used this particular pedal to see if it actually works with my pedalboard (HENCE THE SHITLOAD OF EFFECTS ON THE GUITAR). I made a demo of *how I would use it* at this particular time. Just made a little track to support it. I do not really make traditional demos, I think demos are boring. And because it's almost Xmas you can win one! Ok, bye! X

I personally embrace this new modeling tech. When I first started guitar 20 years ago, studio quality gear wasn’t made for the consumer market. You went out and got an OK guitar and plugged into whatever shitty combo you could afford, then amassed a collection of pedals to shape your sound. Nowadays your average aspiring musician can have all sorts of capabilities at their fingertips for cheap. You can get a great sound without having to save up, wait years and hope you didn’t blow your money on the wrong product when you could finally afford it.

You can use all vintage low-Fi al the way down to a Reel to Reel 4 Track recording (i.e. Jack White) or a 5,000.00 Dollar Mayones guitar through a Kemper into your Torpedo speaker emulator into digital recording unit. You can use this and You can use that.It makes no difference,It makes all the difference........? Do what you want and have fun, it's music. We now have an infinite platform or canvas to create whatever we want. I just love companies like Mooer and Nux that make it affordable for musicians that are not rock stars. the working musician.The guy that goes to work and cleans your clogged drains, Fixes your washing machine, works in a warehouse, the full time student that works part time. I would have preferred more of sound demo, but it is good that you took the time to explain the principles of the device for those who might not know. It is 2019. I feel like the electrical properties of amps are quite well understood and technology has reached the point where we can easily simulate that. The Kemper amp is basically proof of that because, as I understand it, all it does is measure what is going on inside the amp and then replicate it (that it was makes it a "profiling" amp). I am sure there many out there that feel that there is some kind of "magic" to using actual tubes and whatnot and that such a thing could never be replicated something like "measurements". Hell, a lot audiophiles dispute the idea that you can even "measure" audio and assert that they don't tell the whole story. I know hi-fi and guitar are not the same. They have different goals (hi-fi being replicating the signal and with guitar you are trying to generate an entirely new signal). As finicky and nuanced as an actual tube amp may be with respect to it altering the input signal that comes from the guitar, the things do have to obey the laws of physics. It should be possible to predict pretty much how they would alter signal (if it were impossible to do so, amp builder probably have a pretty tough time designing an amp to sound a particular way at all). Now not every tube is exactly the same of course. Modelling all that in real time without is probably quite tricky. However, computers are pretty sweet now and people have working on this sort of thing for while, so it shouldn't be surprising that they've seemed to figure out how to do it. So from a functional standpoint it seems like amps are no longer necessary. I am sure the theoretical knowledge to do so has been around for a long time, but implementing such a thing practically (and affordably) is probably a more recent thing. Now that doesn't necessarily mean it will replace all amps. I went out of my way to acquire a turntable to play LPs. CDs and other digital formats have long been vastly superior to vinyl records. Unless a DAC is really badly implemented they provide pretty much perfect replication of the source. This isn't up for debate by the way. This is pretty much fact. If you don't believe me feel free to challenge the people who came up with the Nyquist-Shannon theorem. But I digress. My point is vinyl records have been functionally obsolete for a long time. That doesn't mean that people have stopped using them, nor do they need to. Turntables are fun. That is why I have one. TL;DR: This device looks like it can provide pretty much all of the functionality of an actual amp. That doesn't mean we should all get rid of our amps. It is just another option to those who would like to use it. If anything it opens a lot of doors. No longer does "good" tone need to be linked to expensive and exotic electronics. Now pretty much anyone can have it at a reasonable price. This is a good thing.

The funny thing is, I was reading comments while listening to the "demo" and was waiting for the guitar to enter the mix. The demo ended and I realized that "to me" there were no guitars in the song at all. I guess every sound I heard was coming from a guitar. I guess those processed tones are what some people are looking for, but not me. I play an old Les Paul through an old Marshall with no pedals. Could this preamp replace the tone I have become used to? Paul you are a great player and a gifted teacher. I thank you for all your entertaining videos.

Of course it can, they have all sorts of amp modelers out there, even in tiny amp combos. "Do we still need amps?" This product, Kemper, etc. shows us that we don't. Do we still need pedals? Again, Helix, Kemper, Axe-FX, etc. show us that we don't. Do we still need guitars? MIDI, synths, etc. show us that we don't? Do we still need guitarists? Artificial Intelligence shows us that we don't. Technology can conceivably replace everything, but screw that. I'd rather hear SRV with his Strat, TubeScreamer and Dumble, or Angus with his SG and Marshall, or BB King, Lucille and an L5, or some bluesman on a porch with a guitar from the Sears Roebuck catalog. Lugging heavy gear is a pain, but they're not called "working musicians" for nothing. Technology is a very convenient tool, but it has a slow, deliberate insidious knack of making the user less and less relevant. Keep playing your red Strat and ToneKing, Paul. You all sound great together.

I don't think it should replace an amp, pedal or else but rather be an alternative of those things. I've seen lots of touring musicians using multi FX units, midi controllers and all sorts of digital stuff. Johnny Marr from The Smiths uses a Boss GT100, Depeche Mode uses midi controllers live and it sounds good, you literally can't hear the difference BUT they still use their analogue gig in the studio and on their records. So it's a nice balance, we should be happy we have such amazing tools these days! Analogue or digital, we should use every kind of resource available.
@vierkp6 жыл бұрын
i think it is a big difference between technology replacing human activity and technology supporting it. Technology could replace guitar playing only, if you are interested in not more than what comes out of the speaker. no choice for a guitarrist. you are interessted in creating and forming sound and music by the interaction of your brain, your ears, hands, and your guitar. maybe even more parts of your body😎. technology can help you doing so without owning, carrying and lifting tons of heavy glass tube and transformer iron loaded gear. what one considers as a heavy working musician might by perceived as heavy work force wasting musician by others.
@AtomicMug6 жыл бұрын
@@dspindola94 Everything you said is true, and I'm not trying to completely bash technology. But to me, it's made a lot of today's music sound a lot more sterile. All of the great musicians have a unique, distinctive sound, and while digital technology and the unlimited options it offers can help someone find their own sound more conveniently and for a lot less money, too many options can be a distracting rabbit hole that holds them back. Being able to sound like everything can also make you sound like nothing special.

I've spent time in recording studios with 2" tape and 32 channel mixing boards. I've played live on stage with amps. For musicians, we have had what is truly a revolution. With convolution, artificial intelligence, and other signal processing techniques, we no longer need amps and cabinets to get the guitar tones we need. If I'm working at home, there's no need to piss off my neighbors. Which, I would have to do to get the best tones with an amp. But now? I can get all that deliciousness through my headphones, and my neighbors are none the wiser. Quite a few major artists are using digital modeling / IR for touring. No more worrying about room reverb, isoboxes, club / house engineers messing with your gear. Just plug right in to the house PA and you're done. Nothing will replace the joy you get playing in front of such power, feeling the air vibrate with energy. But amps are no longer a necessity, and their use cases have narrowed.

Playing in a band is about guitars plugged in amps with tubes and speakers. Find your gear and play for real. So many units are just built for gearlust... Recently I had to replace my single-ended with a transistor thing and an amp simulator within because the power supply had melt, so I played with that stuff for the time my 5W tweed was serviced. It made me feel I played with a dead amp. The tone wasn't real bad but it was just dead. I don't know, find your guitar, find your amp and play it like saxophonists play. It's intimate, it's physical, after years you get your sound, you express yourself and you just don't need a box that might give you the feeling you could have all the sounds in the world cause then you get none of them. I use to enjoy your videos because you play with care and sensitivity and I like the way you explain the matter of an acccent here and a ghost note there, so no I can't believe you enjoy that kind of gear. I enjoyed the one where you compared your first amp with your actual one. It's all I talk about.

Times change... (I don't know if I like it but it's fact)
@marvinrockon6 жыл бұрын
It's part of the evolution and I like the steps it takes. There were people probably criticising Amps back than that it isn't music anymore, real talent is playing an acoustic guitar and that everything else is basically cheating or not music. (Heck, there are still noblets saying that a real guitarist plays acoustics only nowadays. Those people are fun...) Times change and with it the gear we use or can use. I love my Amps more than any plugin or "rigs in a bag", but there's no way in denying that things like that are pretty cool and a step forward. It's like with the TVs. They were bulky, heavy and had less functions not to many years ago and while the flat screens had to be developed over years to display the eye candy we are used to today, boy, are we happy with those flatscreens nowadays. I know how you feel, but it's just natural, since we feel comfortable with what we used so far. But that new technology and the ones coming in the future aren't bad things. Especially since we are still the force, who create the music we play. These are just tools if we be honest. It will all still be us who need to practice and write music. These tools will still be tweakable to our taste and preferences. It's the future and it's up to use if we personally embrace it or not. But it's coming. It's on our way and there's no way we can stop change and technological advances, developments and steps in directions we might find strange in the beginning. I still find it shocking how many great guitar sound on Albums are made with Kemper or the Axe-FX and no one could tell, including me, but I welcome every convenient evolution that still let's the people do the music.

I catch ALOT of hell every time I discuss this topic. I'm a very old guitarist. I grew up finding great amps, great guitars, and great pedals. Spends hours and hours trying to dial in tones, I still, at this very moment, have 9 heads, 3 combos, 9 speaker cabs, about 12 vintage speakers in boxes waiting for homes, 11 guitars, and about 150 pedals, 10 mics, 4 interfaces, and a Two notes reload. I "ATTEMPT" record with Ableton Live. I get into trouble when I advise, or tell people these days, when they ask me what amps to look for, what speaker cabs, etc.. that you dont really need them anymore, and that I RARELY plug into a speaker cabinet these days. Amp sims, pre amp pedals, IR's and decent recording software make it possible to get GREAT tone, for the bedroom player, to a live situation. I have friends that have abandoned amps and cabs all together, opting to play through sims, through laptops, into the front end of a venue. And I had to admit, most people would NEVER know, they werent going through a Plexi...times are changing. Its not easy to plug into my Hiwatts and play them at the power they NEED to be to get to the sweet spot, except that the Reload can attenuate them pretty nicely. The same goes for my Marshalls, My Sound City, even my Fenders. So, do we NEED amps. Nope. Do we still WANT amps? Yes....but they are not necessary to play live, or sound great in your DAW. The Tube industry is going to get smaller and smaller. ( I believe someone said that all tubes are made in 5 factories these days?) It's a good thing, more and more people can get great tone, get inspired, and produce music more easily then ever before. Its just kinda hard to swallow that the finesse that it used to take to get great tone, is now just s click away. Great vid Paul.

Being a worship pastor at a relatively small church, I've been on the journey of low volume guitar sounds. I currently use a 1979 Fender Super Reverb into a suhr reactive load into a digitech cab driver. Most digital preamp or even drive sounds that I have heard or played almost do too much of the work. I havent really found something digital that feels like it still has the headroom and the responsiveness of a real amp. I'm open to my mind being changed, because life would be a little less complicated for gigs outside of church, and I would love to be able to put together a low-cost setup for my other guitar players that's at a quality I would not be ashamed to use. Also the digitech seems to be the weakest link of my chain right now, I dont love it. I'd love some suggestions there as well. Thanks!

I think that when an electric guitar is played through a guitar amplifier and there is a relatively short air path between the loudspeaker and the guitar, that does make a difference to the sound. Even at lower volumes there is a feedback path, the sound from the speaker vibrates the guitar body and some of that energy reaches the strings ... and so on in a loop, even well below obvious howl round levels. Methods such as DI recording or even driving a PA with in ear monitoring aren't quite the same as using a guitar amp.

I gave up amps years ago!- A very bright amp modeler in a DAW + a few different amp-flavored pedals which have a darker character (Marshall & Orange in my case) after my dirt pedals sound better and are more flexible than any amp I've ever used and I'm never turning back

The short answer is yes: I still need amps. No less than 2 4x12's and 100 watts RMS, actually. ;D

now that's what I call good timing. I'm actually looking into buying something along those lines, and have been looking at different (cheaper) products like audio interfaces to connect my guitar to the PC. I've neglected my guitar practice for a couple of years and seriously thinking of getting back to it. I don't have the budget/space to get an actual amp/pedals though. Can anyone advise something good? And how exactly is this preamp different from an audio interface? BTW Paul, really looking forward to your learnpracticeplay thing, if it'll cover music theory I'm all in!
@yoyoninjaboy64316 жыл бұрын
This is a completely different product than an audio interface. An audio interface is a digital to analog converter (DAC) which is required to record anything to a PC. DACs have preamps but they are not made for guitars and will not distort pleasantly (most of the time). The built in cabinet feature would actually make this a pretty slick practice recording and even live solution. That said with my experience with Hughes and kettners Redbox (via a tubemeister 36) you're much better off using amp plugins and impulse responses than just cabinet emulation. Alternatively use this instead of amp sim but still use impulse responses with the cab sim off. Or go ham and get some tube amp and a reactive load (with impulse responses) or ox box. Or just mic the damn thing lol. The Scarlett 2i2 interface is very popular sounds good and is affordable.

@@yoyoninjaboy6431 sorry it took me so long to respond. Thank you for your tips. Is it not better then to simply buy a cheaper amp? Like a mustang v2 or something along those lines? Since my speakers are not exactly studio monitors, it's better to have an actual amp speaker right? plus mustang comes pc connecting capabilities and some ways to modify the sound within it's software
@yoyoninjaboy64316 жыл бұрын
@@msykala mustang would work. If you ever play with a drummer it will not cut it. It's a little more expensive but I know the boss katana is probably the best in class digital modeler right now.

Love the simple and quite different little "music video" as time goes on the digital side of music seems to be more and more prevalent as someone like me who uses modern amps and vintage pedals, it's interesting to see the change happen. Keep up the great content!

Try might like miking a nice small amp first. I've used modelers for years. lots of Casino and other "lame" corporate gigs don't even allow amps on stage. All insert, FOH, period! That is their rules! No amps! eeek! the modelers are ok, but a tiny amp with a SM-57 sounds more real and is much more controlable. You might hate it but just try a 5 watt amp with a quality 8" or 10". If you watch a ZZ Top show, recognize that ALL that FOH is coming from ONE 12" speaker in an isolation box, set off back stage !!! Billy is really a smart guy and little iso rigslike that can really sound great!!! BTW I tried a BlackStar Fly for this, last month, isolated. Man! it sounded pretty useable!! It is a 3 watt 3 inch speaker!!, ran it miked and folded back into the floor monitors and didn't tell the band. (blindfold test sort of)....no complaints. I didn't love it. but I didn't hate it. Talk about light weight!!! Talk about fast tear-down!!!

lexzbuddy I agree that amps are excellent. They suck gigantic donkey balls if it’s 3am in your apartment building that 30 other people live in. Gear heads on the internet with their listing of great gear and for what? The only thing that matters is the song - getting one done, as in complete. There is really nothing like a perfectly recorded piece of shit song by a trustfund baby and the $50,000 worth of stack amps and 18 guitars his mommy bought him. Yeah, sounds great! The songs a completely stale, uninspired pile of catsuit BUT it was recorded well! When will people learn that different circumstances require different tools? Of course we would all love a tricked out home studio but sometimes it can’t happen and it’s on you to make it work with garage band and an acoustic guitar if you must. *mild rant over* 🤪
