Do Woodcarvers Need to Draw?

As a beginning carver who has taken one class on relief carving, I find it more productive to work from patterns I transfer onto the work through carbon paper. I think the idea here is why make the student stress over drawing when they are simply trying to learn the tools, what they can do, and some of the basic cuts, which can be frustrating enough. I figure in 3-6 months, I might be daring enough to try to use my own drawings. I like your channel and admire your skills.

Thanks for sharing your drawings. I've dabbled over the years with drawing wildlife and I think it really can help a carver learn an intuitive sense of proportions. But like you said, you don't have to be a proficient drawer. I also follow a few youtube channels that have been helpful: The Pencil Maestro, How2DrawAnimalsm, The Art of Aaron Blaise

I agree you do not need to draw to carve but it really helps. I am lucky to have an ability to perceive things in 3D in my head. So I can have a clear understanding of my carving before I start. But often I do a rough sketch, like you, to get the dimensions before I make first cut. Luckily for me, I am an ex-architect and I have had training in drawing. But you do not need to be a trained artist to be able to draw!

Great info. I'm not sure if Hobo sketches.....I know he does draw on the carvings.
