Just did a jdm ej205 swap in my 04 WRX since the cost of fixing the original usdm engine was upwards to $5k+ (Tech said it had a burnt/moved/damaged valve that was causing a cylinder 3 misfire). The jdm engine and labor cost me just about 1300 total and an additional 350 for a tune. Was definitely worth it and despite chasing that misfire for close to a year, I have no regrets in tossing money into the car hoping it’ll fix the problem. All the experience gained from the trials and tribulations was definitely worth the investment, learned so much about the ej engine and cars in general since I’ve embarked down this rabbit hole. With the new jdm engine, car feels like a new machine. Finally have some peace of mind again😌

Also had- steering rack leak, pedal assy crack, firewall cracks, driver seat backrest crack, power steering pump leak, AC compressor leak, brembo brake caliper seize, turbo crack to name most issues. Car now has 168k miles and just finished rebuilding most of the car. 2019 drivetrain, type ra short block, built heads etc. Love the brand, can’t stand the crowd/community. Love Subaru. My 21 outback saved my life in a car accident a month ago. I’ll be getting my 21 STI soon. I will say I agree. If your goal is to drive the fastest car for the least amount of money, Subaru is not the route you want to go. Dollar for dollar the wrx or Sti are probably one of the more expensive cars to modify when it comes to power. But it’s a give and take. I love Subaru. I was considering a VW golf r, because of gas mileage, insurance costs, and price for modifying. But they have their pitfalls as well. No company has it all right. I’m with you by the way. I’d buy an evo in a heartbeat if I can find one low enough mileage. I’m happy I found your channel. Because these Facebook groups can get super toxic.

People never lets go of stereotypes and that’s why. Like we’ve all heard of the “BMW owners” or we all heard of the “Mustang owners” and we all know the stereotypes associated with those cars. People never let that go... so it’s always the oil leaking, valve cover gasket, blown head gasket, ringland failure, cloud vaping, monster drinking, broseph Scoobie for Subarus. Personally I like Evos better because although the interior feels cheaper than a Subie, it’s easier, cheaper and reliable to make power out of an Evo vs Subaru. But I love both. Your BPJ STI is beautiful. I found a new love for Subaru’s thanks to your channel Tanner 🤜🏻🤛🏼

Oh, and I hope to God not, but it may have the beginning of a spun bearing. I'm gonna try the cheap EJ fix, and try to sand down the crank, and replace the 3 bearings I can get to from the oil pan. Oh and ofc replace the uppipe, fingers crossed everything works out.

I'm making this comment before watching the video. I have my first subaru wrx which is a 2013 sedan. I made a mistake by not getting a 2015 and seeing how little parts there are currently available for anything prior to 2015. Not impossible, just hard. Amount of things needed to increase the life of the engine. Changing headers to equal length, cyl4 coolant mod, AOS. Another thing I've noticed is the amount of money put into performance mods doesn't really match the amount of power gotten out. I've met people who are somewhere between 5k-10k deep in mods and barely touching 400whp. Back to the video to be proven wrong or right

Hey Andrew. A lot of mistakes occur with your ideology in mind. WRX's just aren't meant to be tuned, no offense. For the price of a WRX, you can get a slightly older AMG or S6 that would gap a WRX. I find that the WRX is truly the unique spot between performance and reliability. Owning a 400+ AWHP STi and a 180HP Impreza, can tell you that the purpose of the two is worlds apart. The WRX tries to fill that gap, and it does a sure fine job, but let's not kid ourselves, the new FA20 just isn't the best platform for power. Rather spend the money on a CLA45 AMG. WRX's should be enjoyed as great whippy vehicles and head-turning cars, but for real performance, save that $10K extra for an STi.
@andrewbutler24253 жыл бұрын
@@nikolayangelov7763 I've noticed this unfortunately. They definitely seem more of a head turner as long as you get the proper year or it becomes difficult to find specific parts that don't need to be custom ordered. Definitely not a good platform for trying to make power that won't kill your bank account. I've considered looking at making my wrx a reliable daily, getting it paid off, and looking into a different platform for power but unsure of what. Definitely want it to be unconventional and have people do a double take when it goes by.

Wrong engine. The JDM STI engine makes plenty of power with bolt ons thanks to the big port heads. And none of those bandaids you mentioned will stop the ringland from failing. You need to regap the piston rings.

Feels like piloting a 40s' japanese jet plane in a sense... I've driven a lot of cars and nothing compares to them. Started watching WRC back in 1998 and immediately feel in love with the Impreza. Was super excited in 2001 when we finally got the WRX in the states. I would soon learn the limits of the EJ. I was in denial that my EJ couldn’t handle the power I was seeking. And learned quickly I was wrong. Then over time the Impreza got heavier, grew uglier and the engines just stayed the same with all the issues from 20 years ago. Still watch Subaru’s launch control hoping to see some glimmer of hope for the newer chassis, only to be disappointed. They don’t design the Impreza to rip on tight narrow rally roads anymore. Subaru just simply lost me along the years while they tried finding a place in the American market of fat heavy cars. Really though, they simply lost themselves and the soul of their brand

Bought a 15 sti brand new and loved it. Modded it with all Cobb parts minus the turbo/AOS, and it lasted for 6k miles with bearing failure at 12k on the car (380whp). Always changed oil at 3k miles, drove it very reasonable, and had a very bad tuning experience the last time it was tuned. The car had failure on the dyno. It was not a tiny shop that tuned it. If I could do it all over again I would have pulled the entire long block to sell it for a built motor. Then I would have found a different tuner. Since then I put everything back to stock with a type RA bottom end. Sold the mods to cover most of the rebuild. In the middle of everything I got a deal on an evo 9 that I have invested my time/money into. All in all, I still like Subaru, just left a bad taste in my mouth with how it all played out.

Subaru's in my pov are a symbolic car to own. Community, heritage, and more importantly friendship. There will always be those that hate the EJ,FA platforms because they never understood what makes these cars unique and stand out. Power isn't everything when building a car or upping its performance, subarus are cars that require more care and in return they deliver right back. Saddly from what ive seen are people who can afford then only to abuse them. AWD,Turbo,manual transmission, and the aggressive looks doesn't mean they can handle being treated like race cars off the lot. Botton line SUBARU'S are family, and for those who hate them for 'blowing up' are those who failed as an enthusiasts. It's like hating someone you don't know becouse of a rumor, every car has there flaws, pros and cons. Or how people would bash on bash on dodge,ford,subaru and honda. If your car puts a smile and makes you happy as F than you picked the right platform and community to be around despite the toxic 'car person' we should be ignoring and feel happy with what we got and learned along the way together as a car culture✌🏼.

We were on our way back to the states from visiting relatives in Montreal, when it died in the middle of nowhere in the Quebec countryside. Having owned numerous cars from different manufacturers, I agree with you on the fact that every car has it's problems. From talking to tuners, car builders, and friends and/or random people at meets, it's numerous things. Just like people hate on hondas, fords, chevys....... it's not just subaru. But, since you asked specifically subarus, this is what I've gathered throughout the years. For the longest time, the STI has cost a ton just to make what close to 400whp until recently. Spending over 30k on a new car plus another 10-20k on mods and have to barely beating other cheaper cars or car at the same price with less mods, I think people started to negatively look at them (especially for the longest time the ring failures spread like wild fire in the mid to late 2000s). Another reason is the fact that people that own them think it's the best car since sliced bread and people just got negative vibes IMO. I have numerous friends that own them, and I know the cost of building one to only push OK power where you can get another platform for cheaper or equal and make shit ton more. Now power isn't everything, which i completely understand. I don't hate on subarus at all, I've enjoyed numerous cars and they all have their good and bad. Like I said, you'll always have hate on any platform, not just subarus.

This! I agree with pretty much all points. I've seen the stigma that people do think it's the best car outthere which it's not. It's great car but by no means the best. I've known lots of Subies, non-turbo, with head gasket issues over 100k. It's been a known thing for years. The repair, relative to the rest of the vehicle maintenance, really isn't that expensive. On my RS coupe it was a $1k fix. Otherwise the issues have never really been too bad if the car is kept stock. For me, I just love Subarus because you can drive them in any weather condition and they feel balanced. "Fast" is relative, but most people can admit that handlingwise Subarus do very well compared to their direct competition. Unfortunately most people cross-shop Subarus with things that never really make sense. "I was thinking of getting a WRX, or a BRZ, or a GTI, or a Camaro, or Mustang, or an F-150. Not sure though." lol Like bro, what?! How about, "I was thinking of getting a WRX or STI, or another AWD, manual transmission, turbo vehicle." **crickets** Thanks for having the courage to tackle this in a video. I'm constantly fighting dudes on forums to have reasonable conversations. Most people are just overly emotional and biased based on emotions or limited bad experiences. I've had some horrible experiences with my past performance Subies, which is why I got a 2017 Impreza to take a break until the next STI comes out. Then ironically I had to replace the upper oil pan gasket the other week, which I've never had to do any of my previous 7 Subies. lol Oh well!

I'll put it this way. I grew up with a dude and we had this childhood rivalry. we always competed with each other in everything. sports, video games, cars. he liked the Ford Mustang gt500, I liked the Chevrolet Corvette. we always argued which vehicle was better. so I grew into that even more, I don't think I would ever want a ford, I definitely don't want an aluminum body F150. after working in the body shop world for 11 years, the aluminum body was the biggest mistake. those beds tear and get destroyed to easily. I've seen brand new company trucks pop up looking like a 20 year old beater because the aluminum can't handle the abuse, great weight reduction, horrible durability. I also mostly buy and drive GM. I've had 4 GMs so far, and 1 Eclipse GSX and I'm currently waiting for my 2021 STI that I can't believe I ordered. so I'll be a new Subaru owner in a couple months. but it starts out as that young innocent rivalry, but snowballs over time and picks up some bad seeds along the way. its everywhere. coke vs Pepsi. thin crust vs deep dish. android vs apple. electric vs gas. Marines vs Army.

I love have always loved subarus and have personally owned three. Currently I own a 2005 STi. The only thing I really never understood is how weak the stock block is compared to other similar brands (mitsubishi). Granted, this is mainly a USA issue. Other than the closed deck 2.2 we got in the 90s (I think?); we have never really gotten a semi closed deck or forged bottom end like Japan, Australia and tons of other countries received.
@Smeedia3 жыл бұрын
With evo vs STI it's not a real apples to apples comapision. Mitsubishi used a closed deck iron block vs subaru using a semi open deck aluminum engine. The iron blocks just going to hold more power.
@MeG4tRoNx3 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia thats my point! You said it yourself; these were vehicles designed differently to do the same thing. With the length of time the EJ has been available, the massive following that subaru has amassed in the united states and subarus loyalty to the customer there is no reason that the block itself couldn't have been strengthened over the years. Still love my subaru and subaru in general but I do wish that something could have been done about the block. The type RA is still open deck with cast internals although i believe the crown of the piston is thicker as well as the wrist pin area. Regardless, I still love my subaru and will never sell it even though I get constant offers lol.

I've a current model WRX and for me, as much as I enjoy the car, I find: It's not as powerful or quick as it should be given the competition It's not kept pace with the times. Modding them shows the limitations of reliability. They can be obnoxious if modded without care / considation. The stock tune is absolutely terrible if you want to drive it progressively. The gear shift is pretty ordinary. The interior is not a really nice place to be. That said, for the money it's almost a no brainer if you want a safe, everyday, reasonably quick fun car. I think its day as king of the hill out of the box are well behind it. That's what's disappointing about it.
