Undiagnosed for ADHD, Autism, CPTSD (not a recognised diagnosis in the US), probably some Tourettes. That and I am such a submissive femme that I could not figure out that I am a trans woman until 30 YO.

@@ClearPathMentalHealth Yes I do and I recently learned that I can have ADD traits along with my autism. This caused me to get enthused for many things as a young man and to suffer the consequences of such excitement as an autistic person (exhaustion, migraines and other aches and pains). I am now 77yo and I am more aware of my condition and its possible effects. I now live a very quiet life and I take things one by one. Thank you.

@Tilnaor I totally get that feeling! Wanting structure and systems but struggling to maintain them is such a common experience for many with AuDHD. I was diagnosed ADHD in 1997 at age 37. But since I've gotten older (past menopause) I have struggled to keep up with masking and controlling emotions. I become exhausted and need hours and even days of isolation to recover. Having ADHD has never really explained everything I struggle with but AuDHD definitely does. I have been trying to learn everything I can about it. This was helpful.

Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to share your journey! It's powerful to hear how your experiences with ADHD and the changes you've felt as you've gotten older have led you to explore AuDHD. The challenges of masking and emotional regulation can be really exhausting, especially when combined with the demands of everyday life. I'm glad to hear that the information in the video was helpful for you as you learn more about AuDHD. It's important to find explanations that resonate with our experiences, and it sounds like you're doing just that. Take care, and remember to prioritize your well-being during those recovery times! 💖

officially diagnosed with adhd, unofficially the psychiatrist added her suspicions and strong beliefs that i am autistic as well all over the report even though i refused to be assessed because society is stinky and it would interfere with my future plans and needs for a visa. AuDHD definitely makes sense, and finally answers the question of what some of my "weird" panic attacks were; meltdowns. I literally figured that out like two weeks ago.

It's important to find a doctor who listens and values your insights. I actually have a video coming out about how to pursue a diagnosis, and I would recommend keeping an accurate log of your symptoms before going to the doctor. I feel you’ve just described me and the challenges life constantly presents me with. Should I consult a neurologist or a psychiatrist ? My doctor is not much help. He waves away or, worse, finds my worries funny. I’m a 61-year-old woman and I’ve always suffered from feeling different and both longing to fit in and wishing I lived by myself, surrounded by books and pets.
@ClearPathMentalHealth
@ClearPathMentalHealth 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and sharing that. I’m really sorry to hear your doctor hasn’t been supportive-your experiences and concerns deserve to be taken seriously. Laughing at you is really out of order, and it makes me angry to think that you have been treated that way! In the USA, I understand that Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists can directly diagnose ADHD and autism. If your current doctor isn’t supportive, you might consider finding a specialist directly or exploring specialised clinics or university hospitals with neurodevelopmental services, where you may be able to help you explore this further. In the UK (where I'm from) If your GP isn’t helpful, you can try finding a private clinic that offers ADHD and autism assessments (like The ADHD Centre or Psychiatry-UK) for faster access, though it comes at a cost. I would advise you to note down your symptoms, however small, and also keep a note of how it is impacting you, or has in the past, and take this along with you. Also, charities such as The National Autistic Society (NAS) and ADHD UK can offer advice on finding supportive services and may recommend professionals for private assessment. Also, it’s completely understandable to feel torn between wanting to fit in and craving solitude; that’s something many of us relate to deeply. I hope you’re able to find a practitioner who listens and helps you feel understood. Sending lots of support your way! Thanks again for watching and commenting :)

Thank you for this summary. After my daughter was diagnosed with ASD, it took 6 months and a burnout for the penny to drop for me. I did tests that indicated likely ASD for me too and I shared this with the people closest to me. But something didn't sit quite right. At work, several people have joked about my ADHD traits. Your list describes me really well. Getting a formal assessment scares me a little bit as bringing this up as a 51 year old gives me major imposter syndrome. But as I am in a constant risk of burnout and overwhelm due a challenging leadership role and menopause making my emotions harder to manage, I need to do something. At least it feels good to have an explanation for why my life has been such hard work.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It sounds like you’ve been on a real journey of self-discovery, and I can only imagine how challenging it’s been to navigate all of this alongside your leadership role and the added complexity of menopause. You’re absolutely not an imposter-it takes so much strength to reflect on these experiences and seek clarity. I hope you can take things one step at a time, and if a formal assessment feels like the right path, know that you’re not alone in this process. Understanding ourselves can be so empowering, especially when it helps explain why life has felt so overwhelming. Wishing you all the best as you take the next steps toward support and self-compassion. ❤

@revdoc76 First of all, thank you for watching and sharing your experience. Being diagnosed with both ASD and ADHD after living with them for so long can feel overwhelming, but it’s also a powerful step toward understanding yourself better. What did your doctor/ professional advise or put in place for you? Do you have a care plan? Now that you have this information, I would suggest it’s about finding ways to move forward with it-whether that’s with help from your doctor/professional, or maybe through therapy, support groups, self-compassion and acceptance, or developing new strategies to manage daily life. You don’t have to have it all figured out right away. Take your time, and take care of yourself :)

@@ClearPathMentalHealth thanks for responding. I got a private assessment so if I want meds it will cost about £250 per month while they titrate, which I can't afford. There was no care plan but at least I know what I have and I'm trying to figure out what that means. Big thing is that I don't want to use this diagnosis as an excuse to let my standards slip. It's been exhausting so far but I don't want to lean into this and let myself go, so to speak, and miss deadlines, say the thing I'm not supposed to say etc and blame it on my AuDHD and expect people to accept that... They won't, and in a sense, why should they as I've been able to mask this long, why shouldn't I continue (despite the fact that I'm exhausted). So taking the mask off and being a more erratic version of myself would be easy to do but I'm not sure it wouldn be helpful. I think I need to work out mechanisms to allow me to be the best version of me with less mental expenditure. So, for example, since I can't plan for something the future well at all, now that I know why, I'll try to get someone to make those plans for me etc. Knowing what the issue is is half the battle, but at the same time, I'm still in a whirlpool of trying to figure out what I would be like if I remove the mask. I'm not sure I even know where to start. You were kind enough to respond to my first reply. There's no need to respond to this, but writing it has helped clarify some things.

Definitely some sort of neurodivergence runs in both sides of my family and mum has a lot of attention deficit issues but we belong to the generations that wouldn't have been tested or diagnosed. Can't be bothered to get tested though suspect I'm borderline autistic. I was high functioning and doing okay until I developed Lyme disease so an avalanche of physical and sensory health symptoms just made everything unmanageable and now I'm dependent on my parents. The hyperacusis is the absolute worst of my symptoms and largely destroyed my quality of life

Thank you for watching and then sharing your experience; it sounds incredibly challenging. It’s important to recognize how neurodivergence can run in families, and many people, like your mom, may not have had the opportunity for proper testing or diagnosis in earlier generations. I'm sorry to hear about the impact that Lyme disease has had on your life, especially regarding hyperacusis. That sounds very difficult to cope with, and it's understandable that it would make things feel overwhelming. If you ever feel like exploring assessment options or finding support, there are resources available that cater to adults who suspect they might be on the spectrum. But your well-being is what matters most, and it’s okay to prioritize self-care and what feels manageable for you right now. Thank you for contributing to this conversation-your insights are valuable and help raise awareness about the complexities of living with neurodivergence and health challenges. Take care! 💖

Yet I’m feeling really discouraged, I’m afraid that a therapist would tell me all the some things that others are saying…

Thank you for opening up about this. I’m really sorry to hear that people around you aren’t being supportive-it can be so frustrating when others don’t understand how important a diagnosis can be for making sense of your experiences. You’re not ‘making it up for attention.’ Seeking clarity and understanding about yourself is valid, and a diagnosis could help you feel more grounded in your identity. If you feel that seeing a professional would bring you peace, trust your instincts. A good therapist will listen without judgment and work with you to understand your concerns. Don’t let the fear of others’ opinions stop you from seeking answers that matter to you. Sending you lots of support on your journey!

AuDHD here, At the start of my self diagnosis journey I had so many doubts… I thought I didn’t have sensory issues either… it took me a while to realise I’d actually just been dissociating and sucking it up my whole life. How would you know it’s not normal? I had an attitude since childhood that I needed to get out of my comfort zone and stop being so pathetic. Trust your own intuition and seek out the autistic community… listen to other people’s experiences. Eventually you will know. Very few people who suspect they might be autistic, aren’t.

Hello,im a teenage girl and my friends think I have autism or adhd or both I don’t really know,and it make me really confuse,because I don’t know if I really have it or it is just maybe hormones ? I don’t know,it make me feel as I were seeking attention but I do have difficulty learning things aren’t interested in but I think it like that with everybody but apparently even if you are not interested you can still focus? Im gonna go see a doctor soon so I would know,i always got difficulty in school and I always has been a people pleaser because of the fear of rejection,but I wonder if it just lazyness for my school difficulty but the thing is that I try n it take me extra extra effort to understand,i just need help but since I was not a trouble kid when I was young they didn’t really care,i did had like help from a specialist educator in school but when I enter high school it changed,since they didn’t do a reminder of my difficulty to my current high school,i also get lot of comments abt how I act,i don’t really realize how I act,but I don’t do bad things,but sometime I talk too much,or sometime not a lot,this make me so confused,thank you for this video I recognize myself in that without self diagnosis it just remind me of me :3

@starryshy1126 Thank you for sharing your experience! It sounds like you’re really reflecting deeply on who you are and what might be going on, which is really strong and brave of you. Feeling confused is totally normal, especially when friends and even adults can have different perspectives. I’m glad you’re considering seeing a doctor to help get some clarity-it can make a big difference to have guidance on this. Remember, needing extra effort for things that don’t naturally interest you is something many people feel, but for some, it can be more challenging. You deserve support for the way you learn and experience things. Just keep exploring and being kind to yourself; figuring out who you are takes time, and you're on the right path. Thanks for watching and being a part of the community! 😊

Thank you for sharing, It’s great that you’re already aware of your ADHD diagnosis, and it’s not uncommon to start noticing traits of autism once you dive deeper into understanding yourself. Many people with ADHD find there’s a lot of overlap with autism, especially when it comes to things like sensory sensitivities or hyperfocus. If you feel AuDHD resonates with you, it might be worth exploring further with a professional?

Hi Peter, I cover the 10 signs throughout the video, with a bit of context for each one. It’s hard to summarize it all here, but I talk about things like sensory sensitivity and hyperfocus. I think you'll get the most out of watching the full explanation! Thanks for commenting!

Social chameleon syndrome - masking in social setting then totally drained. Amplified hyper focus - so consumed in your latest passion you forget to eat or sleep. Amplified sensory overload - sounds feel louder, lights brighter etc Emotional intensity - speaks for itself To do list paralysis - can't start working on list, overwhelmed Social interaction difficulties - interrupt or don't interract Stimming and multitasking Time blindness Special interests with hyper focus Executive function difficulties - difficulty planning and setting schedules then frustration when plans don't happen ❤

Hello. In 2017 I woluntarily got tested for ADHD, as I suspected I had it. The mental specialist, who was about 58 years old, just got out of University with her degree, diagnosed me. She concluded that I got Aspergers Syndrome, so that excluded me having ADHD. Because it is impossible to have both, she told me. One excludes the other. Now I am confused.
@Kexeessen
@Kexeessen 3 ай бұрын
Excluding one for the other was standard until 2013. Then a new ICD (or was it DSM?) was in place and from then on it was finally possible to be diagnosed with both. That's also why there is so little research on AuDHD, because it's still "young". But the person diagnosing you apparently didn't know much about that, or was told "the old ways" at uni...
@ClearPathMentalHealth

Thank you for sharing your experience! I can understand why you'd feel confused. It's actually possible to have both ADHD and autism (now referred to as being on the autism spectrum, including what was once called Asperger's). Many people have a dual diagnosis of both conditions, even though older understandings may have suggested otherwise. I encourage you to seek a second opinion if you're feeling unsure. Sending you support on your journey to understanding yourself better, and thanks so much for watching!
@ClearPathMentalHealth
@ClearPathMentalHealth 3 ай бұрын
Yes, that's correct! The DSM-5, which was introduced in 2013 in the U.S., allowed for dual diagnoses of ADHD and autism, and many professionals around the world reference it. The UK uses the ICD (International Classification of Diseases), and even the older ICD-10 allowed for both conditions to be diagnosed together. The more recent ICD-11, adopted in 2019, aligns with the DSM-5 on this. So whether in the U.S. or the UK, it's now understood that someone can have both ADHD and autism. Thanks for sharing this important context, and thanks so much for watching!

I have both. We are often diagnosed late because of the previous assumption that they can`t co-exist as we display the symtoms in a unique way. Little is known about the statistics and I`m now pulling numbers out of my vague memory that researchers currently are only able to pull out of their asses. Autistic people are more likely to have ADHD than people with ADHD are likely to have comorbid autism. The latest estimate is that probably 50% of us (autistics) are AuDHD. In the population diagnosed as ADHD it`s maybe something like 20% who are also autistic.
