For those who think this doesn't work, I've been patiently working through these videos for the last three months ja mä ymmärsin tosi paljon tästä videota ilman tekstityksiä.

Lotta is right. I live in a small town in Idaho where basically no one else speaks Finnish. I have been using her method for over a year. I can now understand most of what I listen to. I also have found some amazing speaking partners online and I am getting to be quite confident in my speaking ability. Hopefully at some point in my life I can live in Finland. If I can, I’ll be ready to speak 😊

I’m new here but I like your videos. I’ve been living in Finland for over 10 years but I don’t speak Finnish. Mainly because I don’t need it in my work and I can get around easily with English. I’ve tried Finnish courses but the grammar part scared me. 😢 I really like your videos. You have clear pronunciation and there are both Finnish and English subtitles. I’ll re-try Finnish with your methods and videos. Kiitos! 🙏

I have to say there are some benefits of living in Finland, but if you have motivation enough, then it doesn't really matter where you live to learn a language. As a non-Finn living in Finland, my best boost in the Finnish learning experience was that I started working at a restaurant where most colleagues are Finns. I started first in English, but after a year, I was working in Finnish. That kind of thing would definitely be a benefit of living here, but it's not a must when learning languages. I'd say the best way to learn a language is to take time and be patient. You might not see the progress right away, but if you continue the learing process, you'd surprise yourself one day.

This topic is "right up my alley" as we say in English (meaning it applies to me or I know something about this). I visted Finland in 2005 but at that time never even thought about learning Finnish (I remember sitting in the airport thinking that the announcements sounded like they were from another planet). Anyway now almost 20 years later, I find myself learning Finnish, yes, but over here in Australia. I think it's possible. I haven't set foot in Finland since I started learning. It's certainly not easy. But have I learned something? Yes most definitely. I haven't overcome the "speaking wall" yet, but I do understand some basic spoken Finnish. Which I'm sure is more than some of those people you mention, the ones who have lived in Finland 10 years and are pretty hopeless at it. In my humble opinion it's more about having both curiosity and effort. I met English expatriates (immigrants) living in the South of Tenerife and they literally could not order themselves a ham & cheese sandwich in Spanish despite living there for over 5 years...

On Wednesday, MPs debated issues related to the use and status of Finnish, and what some members see as threats to the majority national language. Ilta-Sanomat is among the papers reporting that Pekka Aittakumpu (Cen) issued a call for a tightening of language legislation along the lines of the French model. He believes that the Finnish language should be protected in particular from the dominance of English. "The law could also require private sector operators to provide services in Finnish. In Estonia and France, for example, language law also applies to private service providers. In those countries, a café that provides service only in English is illegal," Aittakumpu was quoted as saying.

yes, i have to agree. i studied for a year and spent a month there, made progress, but the amount of work it takes just to maintain my progress has opportunity costs…so now im studying japanese which has more options for practice and applications. even thou i found finnish very amusing and enjoyed the challenge😊

It depends though on your reason for learning it. If it is for your own personal interest in Finland and things Finnish then it is still a worthwhile exercise. If you are learning it to learn a language and have no real interest in Finland or no real reason to learn it over any other language then it might be hard to get motivated.

@@carolinecreasey469 it was my seventh language and I enjoyed the challenge. There are so many great languages to study. I think I gave it enough time to comprehend the basics and appreciate it.

That's an interesting thought, and I agree with some of the comments here - you have to have reason, at least your personal interest, to make the effort of learning it. This applies to anything really! But it's not only about wanting to live in Finland, I have students who are just fascinated by Finnish but will never live there. Each their jam I guess! :)

Well, you're right that learning a new, completely different language, only to talk with 6 millions of people doesn't seem reasonable, especially when most of them speak English. But... I'm quite interested in Finnish language itself and after 6 months of Lotta's course, I understood almost everything what you wrote. So learning a new language is more about the approach and the attitude of the student. For you it might be a waste of energy to study, but I find it very engaging to learn the language of elves and mummins. Try to find a reason to learn another language and it'll make it way easier ;)
