I am 2 days in Spain I can already understand half :D , I lived 5 years in Finland, passed YKI and still can't understand people when I come to Finland 😭😭😭😭 Lotta you were my last inspiration, because you are very inspiring, but unless one lives in the middle of Finland where its crucial to speak Finnish or has to work in Finnish its mahdotonta!

I totally agree with you. I live in Finland for 12 years. I started learning Finnish when I was 40 years old (my native language is Portuguese). I also passed YKI test. I can read some things, but I still find it difficult to understand daily life in Helsinki. Lotta's course is the best thing I have found so far for my level, and I felt I have improved already a bit in my understanding. But still there is a long way to go (she is also my last hope).

@belled I'm also from Portugal and I'm trying to learn Finnish. Is it difficult to pass the intermediate YKI test? Can you give me any tips? Thank you!

@@Valkis21 Hi Valeriya, I replied to your message twice but KZbin deleted it. 🙄 I studied for 6 years before trying YKI test (used Suomen Mestari books for learning) . You can find many resources online for training (Gimara, for example). Also there are places in Finland that offer courses to prepare for YKI test. Lotta's channel (and also her course) are great for training for the listening part of the test.

Don't lose your hope! It is not impossible to learn a language - even Finnish - when you don't live in the country. I'll share a video on this topic soon :)

Understanding Finnish is like a dance. Some videos (like this one), I understand 95% of the words and I have no problem following. But, if I watch a Karppi episode, I catch maybe 5% of the words and have absolutely no idea what's going on. Even with Finnish subtitles! I have been actively listening and watching Finnish, studying new vocabulary each and every day. Yet after 18 months I still don't understand enough to carry on a conversation. I feel like I will never reach "fluent understanding". It sounds like a wonderful thing, but is it actually achievable with Finnish? I'm not sure anymore.

If you dont have sufficient vocabulary then no, obviously. Consider 10k words is comparable to the vocabulary of a young child who pick up words very quickly. You will need to acquire 3 new words on average every day (forgetting nothing) for 10 years to reach that stage. This somewhat agrees with the data that learning a language is generally 10 years of work. Clearly no language course will ever have enough words to get you to that level. You will need to absord endless materials.

Would an 18 month old kid be able to watch a Karppi episode? They probably wouldn't even be at 5% understanding! I think you are asking too much of yourself too soon. Anyway, karppi has a totally different set of vocab. You need to learn words like "ruumis", "murhata" and so on. 😉 Learning a language is a slow process. Anyway I saw your grocery video and you speak well.

You explained so on point! People talk about how simple English is, but I can tell you many Asians suffer from learning it because it’s different from our language systems.

I don't understand when I just listen, but I understand (recognise) the Finnish more when I read the English subtitles.

Same issue with me.

I think it goes like this: listening → thinking → speaking.

That's a good way to put it indeed!
