Do You Have to Wear a Kilt Belt with the Big Buckle?

As a Scout based in Scotland (despite being from England originally), our full uniform is the kilt with a thinner belt (I think you can just about see it in my profile picture), the same as scouts in England would wear with their trousers, and I find it works better then you would think, and the Scout belt has become my go-to kilt belt.

I have a casual attitude toward kilts. I wear whatever the heck I want with it with no reference to traditional accessories. I pick a belt that suits the outfit. Same with shoes, usually hiking boots and I don't bother with socks over the calf, just regular socks. I'm wearing the kilt for my comfort, not to get approval from the fashion police.

I wear a variety of belts with utility or sports kilts including "rigger" belts and even "western" belts but with traditional kilts I typically wear a more traditional belt. I have thought about a wide, plain belt with a "regular" buckle and I'll probably do it at some point. I've also toyed with the idea of a Sam Browne belt and although I've never seen it, I think it could look good. I think your style advice is spot on.

Learned the hard way department: might be a good idea to take off your big plate buckle when seated, especially in a car. It can wear a hole in the front of your kilt.

As a Texan, the buckle feels natural with a kilt or with pants lol.

I really like the kilt belt I just bought but yes I may not always wear it. My kilt fit well without it but definitely need it with a great kilt.

For my utility kilts, I have used old 782 belts, commonly referred to as a cartridge belt. They come in a variety of colors, the buckle is usually a durable plastic but not flashy, and the width works well with the loops.

It really needs to be wiiiide. More than 2 inches wide. I tried (at home) a plain western-style belt with an oval brass buckle. Normally it’s a pretty big belt but even that didn’t look proportionally right with the kilt. The buckle isn’t necessarily needed but the width is.

I usually wear a P-08 brit web belt with my kilt and use the two buckles in the back as a way to carry my beer mugs at fests,lol.

I wear the 2" wide belts, but rarely a kilt belt with the traditional buckle, because of which, I don't like how they lay. I have a couple of fancy belts, but largely wear something unadorned, like the cloth belts from DNKE. I also have a couple of carpenter's belts, one brown and one black, that I picked up from a local hardware store. These are great when I'm out riding my Onewheel, hiking, or doing something strenuous. But when I'm feeling specially fancy, I'll dust off the traditional belt, pick a buckle from the collection and sally forth.

I just glanced through the Scottish Highland Regiment's dress regulation manuals. They use Sam Brown belts with certain kilted uniforms.

My least favorite part of wearing a kilt is the belt. I have a big belly, and it crushes my mid section. But without my fat belly, it really shows with a kilt.
