I understand that as students and nurses, we have to be professional... but can we still be normal people? In clinical I’ve witnessed many nurses behaving almost like robots. It didn’t seem very personal. For the past 20 years I’ve been a licensed hair stylist. In clinical I speak to my patients in the same way I speak to my clients at the hair salon. When I have down time I go in the rooms and have small talk with patients and I ask if they need anything. It’s different than in the salon, because I know my salon clients are coming back and I want them to come back... at the hospital we don’t want them to come back.. but I speak to the patients in the same way and it seems to be working for me because my clinical instructor said that she received a lot of positive feedback from patients and their family members. I know it’s my job to care for the patients, but I also strive to be an advocate for them. I don’t want them to feel alone while they are under my care. I want them to know that I have their back... I am on their side. I don’t like to speak to them as if I am an authority figure... I speak to them in the same way I speak to people on the street. When patients ask questions, I rationalize in laymen’s terms... I use common language that they understand. If a patient has a bruise I acknowledge the bruise... “Oh, you have a bruise.” I don’t say “Oh, I can see you have some ecchymosis blah blah blah.” I feel like I can be professional, but still be human. I can be myself. My classmates say that I “joke too much... I have too much fun. Nursing is hard serious work!” It is hard serious work, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be fun. I enjoy caring for others. It’s fun for me. It’s enjoyable for me to make people feel good, feel comforted and even sometimes make them laugh. I feel like a lot of times the human element is lost in the medical field. It makes me feel sad.

Great insights on the importance of the "art" of nursing and appreciate all that you are doing to make a difference with your patients! Quick FYI... men communicate caring differently than women. Women will utilize physical touch much more naturally than men. Men will utilize humor as a go to strategy to make that connection and communicate caring. Continue to make those needed connections with your patient and you will always be remembered in a good way as "that nurse!"

ThinkLikeANurse thank you Keith. I love your videos, thanks for sharing. Also, my wife bought me a copy of “Think like a Nurse.” I just finished my semester and I can’t wait to read your book over summer break. Thanks again for all the positive and informative videos. Also, I too am a Christian. Today I feel like Christians are constantly under attack. I’m afraid to be open about my faith because I don’t want to be scrutinized. It stinks. I feel like my best way to show my faith is in my actions, how I treat my patients and their families. What are your thoughts? I don’t want to get in trouble for being a Christian.

I appreciate the update and I know that you will find the book I wrote helpful as it provides a practice based perspective on essential content that many textbooks lack. Regarding your faith, as Christians we are called to be Christ followers and to let our light shine before others. I agree that we need to live it out first but also be willing to Share the good news of the gospel and the forgiveness of sins and promise of eternal life that is available through Christ. Do not let the current politically correct culture keep you from standing for what is right and true!

like the vid! I just turned 52 and looking for something I would enjoy. I have all the qualities you mentioned (been told that). But I definitely am not able to start working young folks hours. Around 40hrs a week Im good for. Is there nothing like that? Thanks

This would be so good if it weren't for all the proselytization. Not everyone is religious or a Christian. Not required to be a good nurse.
