My personal limit is 60 plants, and I have a few rules for my collection: no duplicates, nothing over $50-$60, nothing that requires high levels of humidity or a greenhouse, etc. I also have a "wishlist" on my phone, and will only buy from that list. Sometimes I've walked out of a nursery or big box because they didn't have what I wanted, instead of buying a plant just for the sake of it. I also don't buy a plant again if I've killed it twice 😂 and I have a "one in- one out" policy, where I will only buy a plant if I got rid of another one that was already in my collection.

My personal limit is 30, and that allows me to make sure they thrive. Nowadays I direct my hoarding tendency toward collecting nice pots as these plants outgrow their current ones.

LOL at the planters - i'm the same way 😂 Have you found yourself successfully keeping to the 30 limit? I'm thinking of downsizing, but I haven't gotten the courage yet.

@@carmielmarcelline so far so good. It was hard at first but now every great plant I see I just envision it in terms of time and effort to care for it. When it see it in that light it is easier to walk away empty handed. Good luck with your purging. It’s actually quite liberating!

I got to the point this last summer where the number of plants I had was making my home feel cluttered, crowded and caring for them no longer enjoyable. Ended up gifting 40+ plants to local plant groups and people were so appreciative! I’ve been going through my collection almost daily since then selling my collector plants that have more value and that process has also been more enjoyable than I thought. It makes letting go of my babies so much easier when I get to see the excitement from the new owner. It’s a tough process but I’m feeling like a weight is being lifted of my shoulders and given more space in my home.

This made me smile - thanks for sharing your journey. I'm sure it hasn't been an easy road 🥹 - It's the getting started part that I struggle with most. Transparently, I un-alived several plants this week because I wasn't feeling up to taking care of my plants for 3 weeks. I feel like it's a wake up call because someone else could do a better job at taking care of some of my babies. 😔

We r moving from a 3300 sq ft home 2 a just under 1500 sq ft home. 🤯 Yeah, a plant limit may b needed soon! But like u, how many r 2 many, what do I get rid of, will they survive without my specific care? 😱 I don't THINK I'm a H____R but I will admit I'm alone in that paticular train of thought in my home? I was actually told that I should start a plant shop bcuz I have so much knowledge about plants & WAY MORE than enuff plants 2 make good $$! This coming from a person who likes the occasional plant but can't keep it alive 4 more than 6 mths (alive not healthy)! Downsizing scares the pants off me! With only maybe a half dozen plants that could b considered fairly new 2 the common house plant community, most of my beauties have been common houseplants 4 a 100 years. In other words, my collection has come from big box stores! Not really all that coveted 2 a serious collector. I have them, want them, love them cuz they r mine! I rescued most from Walmart & Lowe's on the discount shelves. I'v nurtured, babied, had anxiety attacks & cried over them 2 get them 2 this point of thriving. In return, in this thriving state, they bring me peace, relaxation & fulfill the need 2 b needed. Not gonna lie, I want some of those newer plants & their hybrids with a burning passion & the only yhing that has prevented that is? I don't have the funds 2 buy them & soon, I probably won't have the room. For me, it's about priorites. Family needs 1st & 4most (this includes any & all furry, feathered & scaley babies we may or may not have @ the moment). Bills 2nd, food 3rd, then when we reach the level of wants, if I have any $$ left, plants get 2 come home with me! 🎉 I have 1 of 4 sons who also loves plants but gets his starts from me cuz his priorities r the same as mine more or less (family, bills, food, wants & then pretty). I also have a 7 year old grandson who is very infatuated with plants! Yay!! 😂 Will I ever get the Florida Ghost, El Choco Red, Vericosum, Red Anderson, Vetchii, etc .... Yes! When they come 2 the big box stores in my area! Not happening any time soon! Do I have a problem? Probably but circumstances help 2 keep it under control somewhat. Will I have 1 after we move? No, I'v planned ahead & done some plant math, 🤣 haha! Any props go in2 1 larger pot with the Mama plant. Philos that have a similar growth pattern; in a larger pot altogether. Syngoniums? U guessed it! And so on, so now instead of 100 plants & pots, I'll have 80 pots with plants! Lets HOPE, 🙏🏻 & 🤞🏻 that the plant math really works like that👍🏻❣ 🤎 ur channel❣ 🥳 Happy New Year❣

Melissa! how on earth are you going to fit plants in a home half your current size?!?!? Rescuing plants can be such a tricky thing. It starts off small, but then it can morph into something HUGE. Because you want to save them all ❤️ I love that your family is also a lover of plants. It makes for great bonding. My mom and I both love plants so i'll usually make her a baby propagation. and vice versa. She wants a pink-ish philodendron, but I need to keep my strawberry shake alive before cutting her a piece. If you created a plant store, i'd 100% visit in the DMV! I'm headed back in a few months and we can shop (or window shop) for plants!

I'd love that! My Grandma Lief (pn: leaf) Lol! stsrted my love plants! Kinda odd, we didn't really get along well, 2 much alike I guess. She loved crafting & plants & she, some how, passed those loves on2 me. Now that I'm older, I cherish those gifts & love sharing them with everyone I can, especially my son & grandson! I'v thought about opening a shop, even just a small one online, but, I'm technologically challenged, 2 say the least! Thank u 4 ur friendly responses 2 my ramblings. I thoroughly enjoy them! See u in ur next video, can't wait! 🤎 ur channel❣ P. S. Shhh! Don't tell my hubby I have this many plants, maybe he won't notice!?😅😂

I understand several of the 6 you mentioned, though personally only struggled with the giveaway and somewhat space issues mentioned early in '23...until I started getting into terrariums. Now I just see it as passing plants on (esp the ones that are notoriously fast propogaters!) so I can have more uncluttered display space for my nature-in-glass creations ❤. My max into 2024 is 70 mature plants, which doesn’t include my 7 semi-self-sustaining terrariums nor my unrooted/potted props (abt 10 teeny prop cups). P.S. Thanks for bringing up the hoarding issue as I wondered how ppl with 200+ plants and limited space often seem to have them just cluttered onto shelves or cabinets so couldn't even see/enjoy ea for themselves.
@carmielmarcelline8 ай бұрын
Any recommendations on getting into terrariums? I think I may try though I don't need more ways to expand my collection 😂 Keep me posted on how you stick to 70 mature plants! I think i'm going to set myself a goal too. We can be accountability buddies 🥰 Yay - so glad you enjoyed! This video idea stemmed from wanting to understand the psychological part of collecting and when it becomes too much.

@@carmielmarcelline I have all kinds of plants and about half of my collection are cacti and succulents so they’re dormant for the winter in the garage and won’t need me until April/may. I just have plants scattered around the house in spots where they’ll survive and under grow lights if they need it. It takes me over a week and probably 20 gallons of water to water all my plants. It’s a labor of love, literally laborious. I really don’t kill plants often, I think 3 or four died last year, but when they die they get composted so they’re not completely gone, just recycled. 🤣
@LostInThisGardenofLife8 ай бұрын
I really don’t have any tips other than not to collect plants that need a lot of care. Like I currently have 2 vanda orchids that need to be watered every day to keep them healthy, I hope they make it through the winter. 🤣
