As A Quarterback In Training, Learning How To Study Film Can Make Or Break Your Career...
Hey everybody, welcome to elite athletes TV. I'm Mike Pawlawski, former 11 year pro college football analyst and quarterbacks coach here at EliteAthletestv.com. So many high school athletes don't understand how important film study is. If you love football, if you like learning about all the nuances of football from the offensive side of the ball, then you need to subscribe to the channel, ring the bell. Don't forget to share this video out to all your friends, to your teammates, to your coaches, and let's help some people improve.
When you're a young football player, learning how to study film is incredibly important. The one big mistake that I think all young football players make when they watch film, is they watch the ball. What you're trying to do when you're watching Game film of an upcoming opponent is to study what they're doing on defense or offense.
This is my Process. I like to watch opposing teams and what they do on defense in a full game fashion the first time through. I watch every snap. First down, second, down, third down, all of it, as it evolves during the game, that way, I get a sense for the team that I'm about to play. I'll watch three or four games that way.
Which games do I watch? Most recent games is the easy answer. That gives me a lot about personnel and where their schemes evolved to recently. In high school, there's so much variation in offense I also want to watch similar offenses to what I'm running. If I'm running a spread system, I want to watch spread system teams against that defense to see how they adjust. To see what coverages they're calling, see what kind of fronts or what kind of pressure I'm getting out of it. And I want to watch those teams that are similar in the most recent games closest to when I'm going to play that team.
So what am I looking for? I'm looking for personnel. That's one I want to see. Do they have a stud defensive end? Do they have a couple of great corners? Are they weak at safety? Where are the weak spots in personnel? Where are they super strong in personnel? try to project out where my offense My team is going to match up well against their team. And so as I start watching this full game First, I will watch the ball for play one. See what the See what happens, see how it evolves? I'll literally be running that film back every time looking at different nuances of what they're doing on defense. Then I'm going to look for coverage. What kind of coverage are they playing? What kind of alignment do they have? What kind of keys are they giving me What kind of tips or tells or they're giving me? That way, under center I can get on the field and say oh, inside alignment. I know he's playing man. Oh, he's off looking into the ball. I know he's playing zone. They're going to have tells they're going to play certain defenses certain ways. Do they disguise what disguise leads to what eventual coverage for them all these things are tells that you can figure out for opposing teams and you want to be able to pick those up as you watch film.
Next I watch cut ups, down in distance, first and 10, second and 10, second and medium, second and short, third and short, third and medium, third and long, Blitz downs, breaking it down into the cut ups and get a real sense for what type of team this is. Cut ups breaks it down into the more granular.
By doing that you're building on your knowledge of what your opponent is doing.
Then once I've done all that, I've gone through my cut ups, I've gone through my full games. I will go back, and I will watch specifically for our offensive sets, our offensive plays, how they match up against different defenses, and I will literally take a play and I will think third long here's our game plan for this week. What do we have in the game plan and for everything that I've got down, distance, field position, the whole nine yards, it matches up with the clip I'm watching. I will literally mentally go through every play against the clip that I'm watching at the time. And so I'm getting mental reps at our offense versus what they are doing on defense. When it comes game time, this is part of that visualization process that I told you guys about, about how you should learn the offense.
If you're young football player, young quarterback, that's how you should be studying game film. You should treat football, the same way that you treat your classes in terms of doing the homework to get it done. Just being physical. Being a gifted athlete isn't enough. Playing quarterback or any other position for that matter you also need to study the game you need to understand it, and you need to put the work in to be as good as you can possibly be.
With some quarterback training hopefully we improve your football skills and you'll keep getting better at the QB position.

As a fan who is trying to see how different things connect when watching football this video is perfect. It would be great to see you pick one game(or even just a single drive), break it down, and talk us through everything you're seeing and what you're looking for. Only a matter of time before this channel blows up!
