This week, instead of an archive post, we wanted to give you a taste of the sort of knowledge that Dr Stephanie Seheult of Ride Advanced brings to the table with regard to our rider positions. Stephanie is a Dr of Physical Therapy who specializes in equestrians, and she has collaborated with me on the Rider Position Masterclass.
This year’s masterclass has had a complete overhaul and there is only ONE DAY left for enrollment. Once it closes, it won’t be back until 2023!
In this video, Stephanie takes us through some of the main muscles that we use when riding, (if you’re a long-time follower of mine, you’ll know that the Glute Mead is one of them!!). She also takes us through how we use them, and how they interact with each other!!
Stephanie’s depth of knowledge is amazing and she’s put amazing work into designing exercises for the Rider Position Masterclass.
Have a look at her explaining the riding musculature in this video and let me know in the comments if it gives you a new perspective on how we use our bodies to ride our horses!
You can also sign up to the Rider Position Masterclass in the link above. It promises to be a 6-week gamechanger for your rider position!
Thanks for watching and happy riding!

Thank you so much for talking in terms of muscles and using a skeleton of the pelvis. This is something I can apply. I’m a Pilates and ballet teacher so you are speaking my language to help me with my horse!

This helps a lot! Everyone keeps telling me to engage my core but I can't feel anything - it's because they mean my lower abs not my upper!

You did another video with the body parts of the rider painted on it...with the same professional talking about which muscles we use. Which one was it please?

I have a few with Stephanie! But they're all focused on specific muscles. If you're interested in more videos like this, my rider position masterclass goes into it more. And checkout this webinar, I think you'll like it: amelianewcombdressage.com/free-rider-position-webinar-o/

I have a question when I move to the canter, do I keep my outer leg behind the girth for the duration of the canter, or when I start the canter only and then put it back over the girth?

I think you keep you outside leg behind the girth throughout the canter because that tells your horse to stay on that lead. Especially when you start doing flying lead changes, I think keeping your leg behind the girth will help keep your horse from changing leads. Hope this helps!
