I am a professional vocal coach/ theatre teacher. The voice is a series of muscles. As long as these muscles are in shape and in sync (vibrating together) there will just be a change of range. IF someone looses their singing ability after taking hormones, there is ANOTHER problem. They need to see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and will probably need to retrain their vocal habits.

SarryXD S.P. Same I’m soo scared. I’ve put so much effort into singing from lessons to choirs and I know my voice so well. I know what style I sing, what my notes are, mixing/belting limits all of that. I’m finally getting to a place where I’m actually good at singing. Like not just I have a nice voice, like actually a good singer. For me singing is as important to me as my gender transition. I want to go on T so bad. I hate my feminine features and although I like my SINGING voice, my voice itself gives a lot of dysphoria. I’m just terrified that it will change for the worse. Like actually this is the ONE thing that’s holding me back from starting HRT.

As far as I now, testosterone will only make your vocal muscles thicker, which makes your voice deeper and your register lower. Although you might have troubles getting used to it, you should be able to manage it the same way a cis boy had to managed it I'm puberty (but faster) (But I'm not an expert, actually I'm here bc I have the same fear xD)

I think when a lot of people say they lose their singing voice they mean that they lose vocal control. When they hear themselves singing off pitch they get disillusioned and so give up resigning themselves to the fact that they have 'lost' their singing voice. I totally agree that singing through it is how to retain your voice and I think you demonstrated that well.

Omg your voice just dropped a full octave 😍😍 also on "losing your singing voice", you're probably right with them meaning loss of high range but in addition some people might not keep training their voice (or at least the right way) after it cracks, so they don't sound as good/strong as they used to. Since you've been training it all the way through you managed to smoothly transition into that octave lower radius 😍👌👌

I'm currently at 4 months. This video almost made me cry because I've been so scared I'd lose my singing abilities for good. I can pick up the strain on you here and there, it was relieving to see. You were an alto, right? I used to be soprano. My hopes are that if I practice enough, I'll still be able to hit semi high notes, but honestly just having a masculine singing voice would make me feel sooooo much better. qAq Thank you for this vid. I've thought about HRT a big part of it being to lower my voice, but being more non binary/ trans masc I feel a little apprehensive about it too because I know that change is irreversible. This was such a lovely video and so well done. The songs you chose were so nice, the lyrics were lovely and to finish with a duet with your pre T self was beautiful too.

It can take a couple of years for your voice to settle on T. I've been on T for almost 11 years now, and had a 4 octave range before I started. I did everything I could to try to keep my singing voice, but I've ended up losing the middle of my range (as in, I can sing really low or falsetto, but nothing in between) and the transition between normal voice and falsetto is pretty harsh, and it physically hurts to sing. I actually had to stop singing about 6 months in because every time I tried, I would spit up blood. So losing your singing voice is not a myth, it does actually happen to some of us.

I’ve been so scared of losing my voice. That’s the only thing that scares me about T-I don’t want to lose my range, I don’t want to sound different. I’m so comfortable with my voice, I know my voice. Having to learn a new voice is scary. It’s such a big part of who I am...I want to look different? I want a deeper speaking voice, but the prospect of not knowing my voice anymore is terrifying. I was kind of hoping that this would be...encouraging? That it would quell that fear a bit? It did seem that after you got past the worst breaking, some of your high notes came back which is promising, but I’m still scared. I can’t possibly know what will happen to my voice/range, and I don’t know which part of me is most important to me, my voice, or my body.

I'm almost 3 weeks on T; started getting my voice drop on day 5. I'd been doing Aussie Vocal Coach's tenor lessons for a year or two pre-t, and am continuing to carefully & gently use his lessons, but shifting as my voice shifts - day 5 I started using mostly his baritenor lessons, and then day 17 I found I could do baritone lessons. I go with the lesson(s) that feel comfortable on a given day - as AVC says 'you want a strong voice, not a strained voice.' The thing I notice, that takes getting used to, is the passagios shifting/having to relearn where mixed voice is - I had just gotten those smoothed out shortly before starting T, where I didn't really have to think about them, and now it's like I'm back to when I was just starting singing lessons & having to bring a lot of awareness to it. Which is not a bad thing, but I can see how it could be disconcerting.

@Hayward1902

I think this one may be about age of transition: I used to have a two octave range and sang contralto with a number of classical choirs in my area. (I read music at Oxford and has been trained in bel canto singing at one point). After T, I found the lower range was only expanded downwards by about two-to three notes and I could only hit above middle C with falsetto. I went to a session at an F to M get together on singing where there were about thirty guys trying to sing. The only ones who could still sing were those who had transitioned before their mid twenties and the rest, including several trained musicians, sounded awful. My theory was that once the epiphyseal platelets had sealed, the larynx could not expand properly. Guys who transition later get a drop in the speaking voice but there is less sign of an Adam's apple. Anesthesiologists also complain about the narrowness of the opening at this point and I have noticed it can be difficult to swallow certain tablets as they get caught in the throat. Given most transmen are transitioning in their late teens and early twenties, this problem should hopefully become less common.
@unemployedscholar4320
@unemployedscholar4320 2 жыл бұрын
Your theory about proper larynx expansion before one's mid-twenties is probably right. I never sounded like a girl, but in adolescence my voice dropped a lot. I sang tenor in my twenties, my range went down to G2. Bass extension (in baritone range).went down to E2, but B2-G2 I couldn't sing in tenor register, I had to switch to bass register, and my C3 was very weak. I'm in the process of boosting my testosterone levels and for now I've lost every note above A5. I've gained a much stronger C3, B2, and A2, and I don't have to switch to bass register until G2. Rasp/growl goes down to A1. Both my tenor register and bass register are much stronger now. So in adolescence and my twenties, my larynx must have already expanded but my vocal chords didn't thicken all that much. When I started to transition, the testerone boost continued what it already started during puberty. I'm sorry that you have to sing the fourth octave in falsetto and that you only gained a few low notes. Are the results less noticeable for guys whose voices are already low before testosterone?

@kit1063

The actual science of why you lose your singing voice when you go on T is actually because, in bio males, as they go through puberty, the larynx grows *with* the thickening of the vocal chords. However, when trans guys start T, the larynx *wont* grow with the thickening vocal chords, and therefore they get squished, which makes it hard to have proper control, and can make singing very breathy. That’s why I’m personally going to start T on a lower dose, and more slowly and gradually work my levels up, so my vocal chords and larynx have time to adjust, and I can continue vocal exercises to help ease the way for my singing voice.
