To everyone here comparing overland and off-roading vehicles... there is a difference. Overlanding is about exploration and getting to destinations. Off-roading is about going through rough terrain and conquering hard obstacles. You don't need 4wd to overland, but you will need 4wd to do off-roading. They are two completely different types of hobbies.

So cruising through back woods, encounter some minor inclines and wet grass or mud 1ft deep and your good in 2wd w/locker proper tires? I thought one needed 4wd for most of that stuff? Or climbers, steep 15° -40°grades, rocks etc.

Here in Michigan, we come across tons of mud, sand and obviously snow. Michigan is filled with hills(which are really dunes most of the time) and 4wd comes in VERY handy in the trails. That being said, with careful driving, 4wd still won't be needed very often unless you're in thick mud, quite deep snow/snowy hills or in sand. Michigan drivers handle 95% of snow pretty much fine in any vehicle though. We all have years of practice under our belts.

As a fellow 3rd gen Tacoma owner I think part of the reason 2wd Tacoma’s do so well off road is that have more ground clearance and more suspension flex than similar vehicles. I’ve driven quite a few fire roads and agree that over 90% of the time you don’t need 4wd. However, I like to have the option to shift my vehicle into 4wd when I get to a tricky spot. For most trails I only ever use 4 high. I have only ever used 4 low a handful of times (probably didn’t really need it). IMHO, I would still prefer a stock 4x4 truck over a 2wd with a locker for what you pay.

What I've gathered from my research - you only need AWD for situations where all 4 of your wheels are not on the ground, sometimes just 1 wheel is there, or you need lots of traction from a lot of mud or snow. If that's not your life - you are good with 2WD.

Great video! I own a 06 Nissan Titan 4x4 with the offroad package and a 02 Ford F250 Superduty 4x2 with a limited slip rear axle. The Titan is my daily driver and I rarely use the 4wd here in northwest Oregon except for when we get freezing rain which is usually in February and March. I use the F250 to haul our RV to Montana and Wyoming every spring, along with traveling on snow covered and heavily mudded Forest Service roads looking for wildlife to photograph and have never gotten stuck. I run all terrain tires on all four wheels and have tire chains if I ever need them. Being near 60 years old now I can say that when everyone says that you need 4wd for the backcountry or driving offroad is completely B.S.!!! Back in the 60s, 70s, 80s and beginning of the 1990s very few people had four wheels drives. Back then people weren’t stupid enough to go where tanks could and if we had to we’d get a horse. Many people went camping in their cars (sedans and station wagons) and pulled their travel trailers with those cars. So if Americans have been “overlanding” for 60 or so years with 2wd cars and pickup trucks, why does everyone need a “jacked up” 4x truck, jeep or SUV (crossover) with humongous tires with rear and front lockers to drive down a backcountry road????? Because it’s a status symbol and it makes them look cool. But there are a few roads in between that you need a four wheel drive with high clearance but like you said, for most forest roads you can get by with a 2wd. Nice truck by the way!

I have been climbing some pretty steep trails on my old stock peugeot 205 on regular road winter tyres and the biggest issue was gearing for the really low speed steep parts. But the moment the ground was even slightly wet there was absolutely no grip and couldn't even reach 1/3 of what it could on the dry, even after trying some knobby tyres it was pretty much the same. Maybe with a locker diff it would have helped a lot but still the standard gearing made it bog down even in 1st gear. Vehicles with an auto could get over this issue but still low range is a really nice thing if you hit a steep climb even on a clean trail and i don't know of any regular vehicle with low range that isn't a 4x4. TLDR anything with some ground clearance can go up trails, but the moment it gets slightly wet you will wish for awd or at least a locking diff

Most of the time you're not going to need 4WD, especially if youre going up a trail as wide, dry and, elementary as this one. However having a vehicle that has 4WD is simply a matter of going prepared when overlanding. If you're doing a tight, three or four-point turn over articulating terrain on a pitch, without a locker, you're going to need four wheel. Also if you're on a muddy hill, locker or not, 4wd will help prevent fishtailing & oversteer/sliding.

Very informative demo and a good reality check. In the current used market, I can buy three 2wd trucks for the price of an equivalent 4WD truck. I might just pursue a 2WD and throw in a rear locker just to be safe. I just want something to use for camping.
@dekompose10 ай бұрын
So all you really need is a rear locker then it's 4x4? Or am I off?
@CasterTown10 ай бұрын
@@dekompose No, a locker on a 2wd will just give you a bit more traction in slippery conditions. Think of approaching a campsite in a bit of mud or gravel. You'll be fine in a 2WD with the diff locked. You won't have nearly the capability of true 4WD w/ low range, but it won't be completely useless like an open-diff 2wd pickup which can barely go up a slight incline on gravel without a bunch of weight in the back.

@CasterTown if not the locker do people custom it to be 4x4? I'm a noob ty appreciate it. 4x4 are a arm n leg but the 2wd are 2k SMH
@CasterTown10 ай бұрын
@@dekompose Converting a 2WD to 4WD would be impractical IMO. Assuming the frames are the same (I'm not sure), you would have to find a wrecked 4WD and swap all the 4x4 parts which is a lot. Transmission, transfer case, driveshafts, front diff, axles, hubs, suspension, etc. You would be better off finding an original 4WD with a blown engine or something and just doing an engine replacement.

@CasterTown ty I'll look into a rear locker. Appreciate the help peace ✌️

I’ve been contemplating getting a truck, right now I take my 2015 Honda Civic to most places including some trails since my ground clearance is good. Last summer I ran into a trail that was only trucks and awd drive vehicles 😔

Awesome video that locking rear differential makes a big difference too.

Outback is AWD, the best AWD at that... they can go anywhere... but I appreciate the video as I would like to do this in my 2wd truck
@regularguyreviews30483 жыл бұрын
I like your attitude because majority of people with built rigs don’t even take them out. But from experience you should invest in a bumper with a winch or at least some rope in case you get stuck someone else can pull you out!

No need to wait to buy a new truck just take what you got out! Thanks!

"I could do this in the prius" Yeh man. Thing most people dont seem to get is that how a car looks doesnt really say how it will perform. Clearance and tires are almost all that matters. Just having a prius body instead of a pickup truck body means basically nothing.

The reason to get a 4wd is for unexpected weather, so the chance of being stuck is lesser than to 2wd.

I have an F-150 2WD with a Yukon ELocker. I'd take it anywhere but rock crawling, or hill climbing... and SOME hill climbs.

A 2wd could do most easy- moderate trails. But once you start getting into trails more difficult then moderate. Then 4wd is necessary.

The real reason why you want 4wd is so that you won't be required to put chains on your tires when driving in the mountains during winter. Chains are a P.I.T.A.

Hi, I just found your channel and I like what you have to say. We have a 96 4Runner 4X4 & a 2008 Tundra 2WD. I might add if you have a small air compressor you can air down your truck for a little better traction, but the main reason is comfort. Ask my wife, she won't go very far in the 4Runner but loves the Tundra for more comfort.

Does the new ford rangers that are F by 2’s…do they have locking wheels in the back? Also are they 2 wheel drives with the 4 wheel drive package?
@Misterlongball334 жыл бұрын
Thanks for adding this I just bought a 2020 tundra 4x2 TSS Off Road package and I live in texas and felt I don’t need to step up another 8000 for the 4X4 reason I would of had to because I wanted leather and the SR5 they said for 4X4 only comes with cloth so I had to go with 4x2 but he was saying most people by the 4X4 for work purpose out here. I just needed the truck for light off roading and towing and hauling. But my buddy was like bro you needed the 4X4 I told him no really do not and you proved my point.

My 4x2 V6 petrol Mitsubishi Triton (L200) has 265/75r16 Cooper AT on zero offset rims. I'm fine in sand and dirt and some bog holes. Mud though is a bit harder.

Great video. I have a 2002 Pre Runner and that little truck with its locking rear differential is all I need. Its my everyday truck. I haven't raised it. It has the stock raised, but I have added 2018 Tacoma Sport rims and Toyo Open Country tires on it.
