The slightly longer than short answer is, yeah, get a piano teacher for 3-6 months AFTER you've learned how to read music at a basic level. There's no point paying good money to learn to read music when you can learn it from a book in maybe a couple of hours. I got a piano teacher when I was 18 (having already learned to read music at home), and I learned lots of invaluable things that were impossible to get from a video - my posture was bad, my hand shape wasn't great, I was using "less effective" fingerings even for simple pieces, and I'd mis-read basic rhythms (I was awful with triplets vs "normal" semiquavers as a teenager). My piano teacher suggested that 15-30 mins of practice per day was better than 2 hours once a week - but she did say that 2 hours once a week was better than nothing. So I took it to an extreme and practised 2+ hours per day... almost failed my A. Levels... but I could play Maple Leaf Rag (the whole thing) after 8 months, having never played piano before. So yes, everyone, GET A PIANO TEACHER for 3-6 months if that's all you can afford. But more important than that, PRACTISE every single day. If you have time to watch a one-hour drama, then you have time to practise for an hour. Missing a show completely will be meaningless a few years down the line... but missing piano practice will be meaningful (in a bad way).

Well, i can talk about my own experience here. I've always been told that we needed a language teacher and academic language learning materials with a focus on grammar to learn a foreign language, but after years of disappointment, I bump into some self-learning ideas and I managed to learn 4 languages by myself to the point that now I teach those languages as a side job. Of course I acknowledge the help a teacher can give us, but it is possible if you find a good channel like this, spend some thousand hours working on your skills and, mainly, work on your motivation. Motivation is the key! Teachers are hepful (I am a teacher), but I always tell my students that the most important work is done on the inside, on our brains, telling ourselves "Hey, champ, you can do it!"... Greeting from Brazil! ;)

As a self-taught musician who's been doing it for 30+ years, and able to play and create some highly complex pieces, even taught myself theory, this may surprise people but a piano teacher still had a huge surprising benefit for me - teaching me how to teach beginners piano. It may sound silly, but to me, if I can't pass on my knowledge, what good is it? I tried teaching people before and it was tough because I had no idea how to effectively communicate what I taught myself through trial and error in the days before the internet. So basically learning techniques that piano teachers use to help beginners (and even intermediates) has been a huge lifesaver for me and helped make it easier to share my knowledge with others.

From my experience it's really hard to find a great teacher. I'm a guitarist and also a vocalist and of course I play piano. I started to play guitar on my own and then I understood that I want to do it as professional as I can. I was lucky!!! I had wonderful guitar teacher which is also the greatest guitarist in my country. He gave me the best advice - to go to multiple teachers at the same time. Also I learned that not always the greatest guitarist will be the greatest teacher and that's important to remember. I went to other really great players and they weren't great at all. Sadly I had serious problems with my hand and I can't play guitar as a professional as I wanted to. I started to sing on my own as a solo artist, because I didn't want to quit music. I went to SOOOOO many teachers. All of them said completely different things - what is wrong and what's right. And then their was only one teacher who said - Just do what the hell you want on the stage because it's your moment and sometimes it's best to do what you feel not what the teacher said is right. And also... most of the knowledge no teacher will ever tell you - some things you just can learn only from experience - uncomfortable situations and fails.

I learned guitar on my own. But I hired a piano teacher. What have I learned? I learned quicker, I learned that I was actually playing harder than I should. The finger techniques shown by a professional will help you. James learned by himself, good! But I can clearly hear the difference of someone who had lessons. Even if is good for the first 3 months. But I think if you are taking seriously, a teacher is worth it.

I think with more advanced songs, having a piano teacher is especially helpful. I attended private piano lessons for ten years as a kid. I’ve recently picked up piano again and the harder songs are just slaying me. Having a piano teacher who advises how to practice and help you learn the subtleties of the song is very important.

One thing you missed out "RESTRICTION". I've taught myself guitar over 10yrs ago and piano for a year, with a few lessons, and I'm about to pick it up again. Restriction was my biggest aid, for technique and composition. When you restrict your playing (only play with one hand/only play in C/only play the rhythm/only play the melody and don't worry about the rhythm etc.) you minimize the things which can go wrong and your isolate what you need to focus on. Once you're comfortable, gradually lift the restrictions, one at a time.

I’m following my plan as I will complete one year of private lessons and then switch to the web.I feel I’ve had to learn the basics face to face and not rely too much on video game coaching at first.I’m learning to read music but I’m still struggling with hands coordination which doesn’t come automatically but practicing is the key

Hey Piano TV, Maybe do one on having "too many" teachers? And what would be "too many". I have 3 private teachers now but I find that sometimes they have conflicting advice or even completely opposing advice/ideas. How to deal? I decided to start out like that so that I wouldn't have the flaws of one instructor reflect in my playing... Thanks a bunch!! xoxo

Thank you for your insights ... Practical, thorough, and entertaining I am guessing that many of your subscribers are people who are heading down the Self-teaching path. This is the path that I have chosen for the time being (although I do buy an hour with a local teacher every couple months) What about the idea of a video dedicated to the self teachers? ... Something like "10 things self teachers don't notice on their own" or "10 ways Self Teachers can avoid bad habits" or "17 internet resources that Self Teachers are unlikely to find on their own" ... you get my thought ... In fairness, you did covere some of this in this video (and others) ... but I can't help thinking that there may be a few more insights that you have to share.

I have been playing for years (mostly church music) but now I decided to attend lessons so as to have a formal course in it and my piano teacher notices and corrects a LOT of things that I have been doing wrong all these past years. I absolutely love it. I'm always excited for the next lesson. Too bad we only meet once a week because I have work and other stuff to worry about so as to be a responsible adult. Oh well.

In my experience any teacher is needed only if you really don't know how to get started, but after you get a solid grasp of the basics the teacher is unnecessary. You can grasp the basics of piano playing in 6 months, even less if you're dedicated and driven. But after that you need to develop your own path if you want to be extraordinary, in 99% of cases a teacher will put you in a learning "box" and you will be stuck there for years. That's why very rarely a student of a "standard" teacher make it big in some way. No teacher can develop your own creativity and style, and those two components are crucial to be successful. There's a huge misconception that technique is the hardest thing for a piano player, and to develop a great technique you need years and years. In my experience it's not quite so: 1) Technique is actually the easy part of piano playing, that's literally just finger gym. No creativity involved. Mere gym. Just do the right exercises for 1h a day and you'll have great technique in a year. 2) The real challenge is exploring the potential of your own creativity, and teachers usually don't focus nearly enough on that. And usually your creativity gets stifled by the method of teaching that the teacher wants you adhere to, a teacher that in many cases isn't that creatively successful either. There's this huge misconception around composition and improvisation, like they are advanced concepts that require years before you are able to tackle them. That's not true, I can get a kid to compose in a month. And not only that, I'd also start immediately with every practice that makes a well-rounded musician. No matter how "advanced" it may seem, there's always a simpler version of it that can be practiced by ANY beginner. So my opinion on teachers is: There are useful at the very start. They are usually unnecessary after you have a solid grasp of the basics, that shouldn't take longer than 6 months. Of course I'm referring to students that actually want to become extraordinary musicians, clearly if the person isn't driven my argument doesn't apply. But for a true lover and practitioner of music a teacher is an unnecessary limitation, you need to explore any learning method you can on yourself. And a teacher usually gives you only one, usually very similar to what other teachers are doing. But in order to be extraordinary you need to practice in extraordinary ways, if you do what everybody else is doing you can't develop the qualities that will make you stand out. All the great masters knew this at some point in their life, from Mozart to Debussy.

Well said sir.. i totally agree.. i took guitar lessons for like 6 months.. was helpful though.. but after that I realised it wasn't helping me enough than i thought it would.. i learnt mostly on my own.. so i stopped and now i learn by myself and i have seen alot of improvements in my playing.. the part about creativity that you said is spot on.. a teacher will only say you how to play a particular thing.. but in the end its your own creativity that makes you the musician you are... Your own style, you own passion.. no teacher can help that.. thats what you have to figure out in your own..

For me I'm learning piano as a second instrument so I have a lot music background. I am starting with a piano teacher so I can get someone to show me the proper mechanics of playing the piano and answer assorted questions. I think any beginner even with a music background should have a piano teacher to get started. For me I've taken two months of lessons and may take a third then I'm going to go it alone for awhile and have piano playing friends I can asked question of. Later on I might take some piano lessons again to fine tune technique and sound production. So I'd say get a piano teacher at least to get started correctly.

The end of the video there is the classic saying "work hard". In the beginning you put in a lot of time & effort learning a few pieces on your own / with a teacher. At some point many people will hit a plateau like this is as much as you can do. And then a teacher comes along and show you all the things you may be doing wrong and all of a sudden your brain lights up. Putting in the time is 1 thing but working smart and trying to do things right the first time (work smart) instead of wearing down your fingers is also a consideration.

Starting from scratch, yes you need a teacher like in any other instrument. If you don't you can develop wrong techniques, injure yourself (yes I had a few pains in my wrists and shoulders when I started) and you will always have someone to guide you throughout your first steps. I learned guitar by myself (play it since 1999) and piano (just started 3 months ago). Believe it or not, I consider I play piano better. Simply because I can play Grade 1 pieces and on guitar I can only play the pop music I like (never learned to play solos) and I know that happened because I never had a guitar teacher.

On my first lesson, my piano teacher told me that I was forcing my fingers right through the wooden key bed. It's much easier on my fingers when I don't do that. I got the message that I'm playing with too much tension. Then he said something that surprised me that the goal is to get off the score and into the mind as soon as possible, and it will never sound very good when you're still reading the music. That was an important idea for me and makes for better practising. And then he said that practising isn't fun... and well, I had to accept that it's hard work, and just go with it.

Another tip could be to subscribe to some forums. There are a lot of amateur piano players with some experience that can gladly help some begginners. Like, recently, I've posted a video of me playing Chopin's waltz in A minor, posthumous, and a person told me I accentuated the third beat with my left hand. I totally didn't notice that, even when I listened to the video! So it is very helpful to have the view of someone else with some experience, even if it is not a piano teacher! :)

You can get just so far without having a teacher make sure you don't pick up bad habits. As comments below say, work hard at sight reading simple scores on your own. Knowing notes is pretty important. BUT! the music comes first, then the score - learn to get past the score, figure out where it is going on your own. You can learn most of the Circle of 5ths. But, I ask my instructor tons of questions, not all on the same schedule that he works on.

Taking a teacher is very important, imo. Of course, it's very fun to play by yourself. But one day. You're going to be very sorry, that you didn't take a teacher. Self taught who've played for about 10 years, usually aren't much better than those who've played 4 years with a teacher.

You are honest thanks!By the way today I just fired my piano teacher ,I just took 4 lessons from her ,before that I was self-teach for one year since i bought piano .So far I can play 30 pieces of master pieces(Chopin , beethoven,Strauss ,Tchaikovsky,Mozart...) but I couldn’t read music sheet I played by heart and by ear and by melody !(I think it’s pretty cool which I did)After one year I decided to hire a teacher to teach me how to read music sheets ,of course she taught me how to read the stave ,but in 3rd lesson she was kind of slowing me down which was the simple practice she would let me play 10 times to satisfy her speed ,I think it’s counterproductive!Actually All I need a teacher for myself is teaching me how to read the music notations and how to build major minor diminished scales...plus I want to know my favourite composer’s soul (that means how to compose!!) omg. I remember the first time I listened to a recording of my own playing. I cried. Why? Because I thought of all the suffering my parents and neighbours went through while I was playing/practicing when I was little. The sound when you're playing yourself and when you're listening is so different. You might think it sounds pretty good while you're playing, but actually, the rhythm is wrong, some notes are too loud, some are too soft, the pedalling is too mushy, etc etc etc.

They are there. I am one of them. Go to the internet and type in piano teachers. I am sure that you will find a mountain of information on teachers and fees. ESTIN19XX get a piano teacher for the first month, like me. I started to teach myself after a month and now, 4 years later, I'm doing pretty good I'd say :)

We're all really non plussed with computer programs that supposedly can teach piano (they don't)-plus the whole "AI" crap, Casio toy pianos, etc. that parents think are ok to have piano lessons on, parents having blown out of proportion ideas about how good their kids are, and, oh yeah, dep. on what kind of piano or music, etc. teacher one is, one's actual skill set, etc., any of the following, regarding views of other teachers: -Teachers that don't teach any music theory -Teachers that don't teach any technique -Teachers that have obnoxious, abusive, belittling, petty, demeaning, etc. attitudes/behaviors -Teachers that put very little effort into teaching, only care about being paid, don't care one iota about their students, etc. -Teachers that we just don't like or respect, for whatever reason -Teachers that are arrogant pricks -Teachers that are inflexible and dull -Teachers that cannot actually observe the learning and improvement taking place with a student, and -Teachers that don't put themselves in the shoes of the students. Of course there is a whole other list regarding parental behaviors that I have personally experienced that I have had a range of dislike for, but I suppose you are probably fairly aware of many of them already... 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

+April rose ADCAMANG I am of the opinion that it's better to self-teach than to not learn at all. :) So yes, it's okay. Just be careful about developing bad habits (posture, fingering, rhythm)!

PaoPao TheCat you can try practicing with your left hand first then your right, then try playing with both hands a bit at a time.. That goes for how much pressure you put on your keys too. Practice with whichever hand you feel comfortable with first then try matching it up with your other hope this helps

Sort of - you just have to be vigilant not to develop bad habits (like posture) - things you might not notice, but a piano teacher would.

A piano teacher will give you personalized insight on what you are doing right or wrong. A video can't never do that! Hence, I think it is always useful to have a teacher if you can afford it! When I've started playing piano, even though I have musical background, I've decided to take lessons and I don't regret it! I'm sure I wouldn't have achieved as much without a teacher. In fact, I would have achieve way less, not just a bit less. My teacher helps me interpret things better ( "play the left hand softer; play the second and third notes of these triplets lighter; pause a little bit, like a breath, at the end of the phrase; do a small rallentendo there, before starting back on tempo; do some crescendo / decrescendo in the scale pattern passages" etc, etc.) and helps me overcome problems, which, in turn, help me stay motivated since I'm able to get better and overcome challenges that I would be stuck onto otherwise. Really a great investment! (And I'm not a piano teacher ;) ).

I'm learning piano self taught (about two years now) and I'm at a pretty intermediate. Right now I'm learning a song off the Haagen Dazs commercial (lmao I know but it's a really nice song) called "Simple Sounds" and it's not too hard for me to pick up pretty quickly tbh but I'm looking into lessons. I'm pretty independent and don't love being told what to do. The reason I quit guitar and drums (although I picked up guitar again) was because I hated lessons so much. Any suggestions for what to look for in a teacher. I'd like someone I can get along with that's not too much older than me but that's kindve difficult since I'm 15. Help!!?

Jackson Catlett Unfortunately the most effective teachers are the ones who tell you what to do. My best advice is to shop around. Most teachers will do free interviews. Many teachers may want you to slow your pace, as you may be missing important skills although you are playing intermediate repertoire. Just be aware that these sacrafices will impact your ability in the long run.

I started playing June 23, 2016 and , I memorized every single note on my Piano . not a Piano or not all piano's . just my piano . because every Piano is very different because sound or tune and the amount of keys . bye

If you want to play a Beethoven sonata and you do nothing but listen to a bunch of professional recordings of that sonata, you will be doomed. Why? Because you will live a frustrated life trying to sound like the artists you hear on those recordings. You will never be happy with your practice if you try to imitate the sound and approaches of Horowitz, Rubenstein, Serkin, or Gilels. Find a good teacher that will bring out the best in you. Don't try to find yourself in someone else's recording!!!!!
