I think it would be a good Idea to expose more to the shadows than to the highlights, especially if you are going for a look, where the highlights are blown out anyway. Usually the results come out way better if you lower the highlights instead of lifting the shadows. This technique is called ETTR (Expose to the right) and is very common, because older Canon Bodys can't handle shadows that well (as you proved). So in my opinion, all pictures were under exposed, to check exposure on your model you can simply crop the image, so that it's just the face and take a look at the histogram. Beside that it was an entertaining Video for me and I also really do like the processed photos a lot. I'm using a Canon 5d classic (Mk1), second hand it's around ~225€, solid build, Full Frame and I highly recommend it to everybody who is willing to take photography serious. Greetings from Germany - Jonas

If you use the 20D with you’re 50/1.2 you get much better results with the 20D. Think about it.

I still use my 20D to take pictures.

Blurry focus with 20D in harsh backlight: use only center AF point to focus on the model and half press the shutterbutton.

The camera that stayed with me 43v3R is the Canon 20D!

Nice comparison, but if you use the 20D with a super high end lens the results are great. No need to spend a lot of money unless you are a professional maybe.

It is obvious that comparing two cameras with a completely different value is better than the one that costs more. It is not out of malice but it is so.

let's say that the 20D is still a very expensive camera for professonal, just make the same test with a 1000D and the 5D and you will see the difference. Same with the lens, buyed a sigma and a canon and the difference is really notable. Without being a complete proffessional but still an artist it get on my way everytime I wanted to take awesome shot. Always happy with the quality of my canon but not so much with my sigma. I think you're talking about method, yes, having such a crazy expensive camera for a begginer will not make him a great photographer or a better one that the one with awesome skills and shitty camera. And actually this is why my friend give it to me, she said that he's wasted on her hand and everytime she saw my photo she was upset and said that I was better than her. BUT, learning with something who actually can't go as far as YOU can go is the most bad thing that could happened to a learner. It's like in art, starting with shitty paint and brush... when you have good paint (who are expensive), great brush (who are actually horribly expensive, non synthetic one for those who love to go far! and also great canvas... who is also expensive, even a begginer will learn faster and better with it.) This things, is as bad as starting with shitty violon for a musician, and so a bad camera for someone who already want to push himself forward. Someone just gived me my 20D, only the screen is a bit too small I love to have great large screen but comparing it to my 1000D I just can't handle how annoying It can be to shot with it. One was 500€ the other was 1500€ just sayin... so I don't know if when you said "not so good camera" was for the 20D but this one is still kicking in the world of photography. Because he's awesome and people rarely sell him to buy another one! ^^ Also I take incredible shot with my 20D, just say that... he's a bit hard to take on hand than those who don't resist much. I'm using it for portrait, animals and wildlife, even cosplays and the only photographer who has a camera who I would love to have is my friend with his 250D. Agree with you with severals fact you said, because some are professionals and take photo with accessories and blablabla and incredibly expensive camera and are just... I mean... gah... I know these people I'm talking about, and they are really not that good, with their great camera. They more use after effect than the camera himself, and I still don't get why... unless to hide bad skills with great photoshop skills? So my own opinion for people who will watch your video, because you actually start by the thing "camera doesn't matter because skills" and I'm trully not agree with it because to learn by ourself and with our instruments you have to know how to use it and have a bit of self: if you have skills you can buy a camera who will satisfied you and even help you to improve, but if you don't have you can use a second hand camera for begginers for less than 150€ and make good photo. Yes, camera doesn't matter but shooting with a compact, a bridge and a reflex is veeeery different, and shooting with a cheap one and a professional one is trully different too!

Well, tools are just that. Without the skills, the tools are useless. I can buy a cheap canvas and paint at the local store, or more expensive paint and canvas at the art supply store. But that doesn't buy me Rembrandt or Picasso skills or status. The cheap canvas and paints does however make it more sensible and accessible to learn the craft of painting. Buying expensive stuff does only make the disappointment bigger with lacking skills.

I also say in the video that gear matters to a ceartain point. Of course better lenses, and cameras help, but I still think your skills are more important.
